BJP, TRS observing Hyderabad's historic day with different events: here's why

Even as Telangana assembly elections are scheduled to take place next year, the state is witnessing a massive political showdown between the BJP and the state government.

Both BJP and Telangana government have declared to observe September 17 with different events. September 17 marks the day when Nizam of Hyderabad surrendered after the military invasion by Indian forces a year after India got independence.

While the Union govt is celebrating the day as ‘Hyderabad Liberation Day’, the K Chandrashekhar Rao-led TRS government has kicked-off a 3-day event to commemorate the same day as ‘Telangana National Integration Day’.

Here’s why Bharatiya Janata Party and TRS are observing Sep 17 under different names

BJP
Like Maharashtra and Karnataka which celebrate Marathwada Liberation Day and Hyderabad-Karnataka Liberation Day, respectively on Sep 17, the Bharatiya Janata Party has been demanding for years that 17 September be officially celebrated as Hyderabad Liberation Day.

The saffron party says the day marks the merger of the erstwhile state of Hyderabad with the Indian Union. Therefore, the BJP-led central government declared to observe the day from this year as Hyderabad Liberation Day.

Union Home minister, who is in the state inaugurated a year long celebrations to mark 75 years of the event.

TRS

Owing to different political perspectives, the TRS government announced to mark the day as National Integration Day instead of Hyderabad Liberation Day . It believes that the day marks ‘the struggle of people against British colonialism and the feudal rule of the Nizam’.

Hence the state is seeing two parallel events for the historical day.

Besides, Hyderabad’s historic day has never been observed officially before.
