Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday accused the Congress of twisting facts and distorting his comments in the Rajya Sabha related to B R Ambedkar after BJP leaders "exposed" the opposition party's repeated "insults" to the architect of the Constitution.
Addressing a press conference here, Shah alleged that the Congress in the past has also misrepresented his and even PM Narendra Modi's comments to spread confusion and mislead people.
"I condemn the Congress for twisting facts. Why did it happen? It happened because BJP leaders spoke on how the NDA governments upheld the Constitution and established with facts that the Congress is anti-Ambedkar, anti-Constitution and anti-reservation," Shah told reporters here.
The senior BJP leader said the Congress also insulted V D Savarkar and blew to smithereens the values enshrined in the Constitution by imposing Emergency.
"When all these facts came out, the Congress used its old tricks and made an effort to mislead the society by presenting twisted facts," Shah said.
Shah said he comes from a party that can never insult Ambedkar.
Asked about Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge's demand for his resignation, the home minister said in a lighter vein that he can quit if this will make the Congress president happy but it will never solve his problems. He has to remain in his chair, a reference to his party being in the opposition, for 15 more years, Shah said.
Kharge, he added, has acted under Rahul Gandhi's pressure to be part of this "malicious" campaign against him by distorting his views on Ambedkar.

Most of the parties have conveyed their choices to the government which will move a motion in Lok Sabha to send the bills to the joint committee. The Speaker will take a final call on the names for the panel and its chairperson.
Sukhdeo Bhagat and Randeep Surjewala are the Congress' other choices for the joint committee of Parliament. Saket Gokhale of the TMC and T M Selvaganapathi of the DMK are also expected to be part of the panel.
The sources said P P Chaudhary is also being considered as the probable BJP choice for the panel in which the saffron party and its allies will be in a majority due to their numerical superiority in Parliament.
While Prasad, a well known lawyer, has held the portfolio of law minister in the previous Modi government, Chaudhary was a deputy minister in the crucial ministry.
From the Telugu Desam Party, the BJP's biggest ally, either Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu or G M Harish Balayogi is likely to be in the panel.
The two 'one nation, one election' (ONOE) bills, including one requiring an amendment in the Constitution, lay down the mechanism to hold simultaneous elections and were introduced in Lok Sabha on Tuesday after a fiery debate.
Opposition parties dubbed the draft laws -- a Constitution amendment bill and an ordinary bill -- as an attack on the federal structure, a charge rejected by the government.
Speaking to reporters on the Parliament premises, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi had termed the bills "anti-constitutional".
"It is against the federalism of our nation. We are opposing the bill," she had said.
The BJP and its allies such as the TDP, JD(U) and Shiv Sena have stoutly defended the bills, saying frequent elections are an obstruction to development programmes and simultaneous polls will boost them by cutting down on election expenditure.

When it comes to Ambedkar, his government's respect and reverence are absolute, the prime minister asserted.
In a searing attack on the Congress, Modi said if the party and its "rotten ecosystem" think their "malicious lies" can hide their misdeeds of several years, especially their insults towards Ambedkar, they are gravely mistaken.
He said people of India have seen time and again how one party, led by one dynasty, a reference to the Nehru-Gandhi family, has indulged in every possible dirty trick to obliterate Ambedkar's legacy and humiliate the SC/ST communities.
The list of the Congress' sins towards Ambedkar includes getting him defeated in elections not once but twice, first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru campaigning against him and making his loss a prestige issue, denying him a Bharat Ratna, and not allowing his portrait a place of pride in Parliament's Central Hall, the prime minister said.
He said, "The Congress can try as they want but they can't deny that the worst massacres against SC/ST Communities have happened under their regimes. For years, they sat in power but did nothing substantive to empower the SC and ST communities."
Modi said it is due to Ambedkar that "we are what we are", as he listed a series of measures taken by his government to implement his vision and accord respect to the iconic personality.
He said his government has worked tirelessly to fulfil Ambedkar's vision over the last decade.
"Take any sector - be it removing 25 crore people from poverty, strengthening the SC/ST Act, our Government&rsquo;s flagship programmes like Swachh Bharat, PM Awas Yojana, Jal Jeevan Mission, Ujjwala Yojana and more, each of them has touched the lives of the poor and marginalised. Our Government has worked to develop Panchteerth, the five iconic places associated with Dr. Ambedkar," he added.
For decades, Modi said, there was a pending issue involving land for "Chaitya Bhoomi", where Ambedkar was cremated. "Not only did our Government resolve the issue, I have gone to pray there as well," he added.
"We have also developed 26, Alipur Road in Delhi, where Dr. Ambedkar spent his last years. The house where he lived in London has also been acquired by the Government. When it comes to Dr. Ambedkar, our respect and reverence is absolute," he said.
Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha witnessed protests from the Congress and some other opposition parties over Shah's alleged insult of Ambedkar, resulting in both the Houses being adjourned.

Recounting the sequence of events leading to Madhabi Puri Buch&rsquo;s appointment as SEBI Chief, Khera said Buch was a whole-time member at SEBI from April 5, 2017, to October 4, 2021. Then, on March 2, 2022, Madhabi Puri Buch became the chairperson of SEBI.
The Congress spokesperson also highlighted the fact that the cabinet to appoint the SEBI chairperson included Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
Pawan Khera then went on to allege that Madhabi Puri Buch, while being a whole-time member of SEBI, was receiving regular income from ICICI Bank, amounting to Rs 16.80 crore. The Congress spokesperson further accused the SEBI chief of also taking TDS from ICICI Prudential, ESOP, and ESOP from ICICI Bank.
Questioning the SEBI Chief&rsquo;s income from ICICI Bank and ICICI Prudential, Pawan Khera said, &ldquo;We want to know why, despite being a full-time member of SEBI, you were taking your salary from ICICI?&rdquo;
He also claimed that this was a direct violation of Section 54 of SEBI. The Congress spokesperson demanded that in light of these accusations, Madhabi Puri Buch should resign from her post. ICICI Bank Responds ICICI Bank has refuted the allegations made by Congress that SEBI Chief Madhabi Puri Buch was drawing a salary from the lender and its group company ICICI Prudential between 2017 and 2024. "ICICI Bank or its group companies have not paid any salary or granted any ESOPs to Madhabi Puri Buch after her retirement, other than her retiral benefits. It may be noted that she had opted for superannuation with effect from October 31, 2013," ICICI Bank said in a regulatory filing.

Kharge said.

"When Manipur is in the grip of violence for the last 13 months and you do not even want to go there, then what else is it if not the murder of the Constitution?" Kharge said.
"BJP-RSS-Jansangh never accepted the Constitution. Is it not true that the RSS mouthpiece Organiser had written in its editorial in its November 30, 1949 issue that - 'The worst thing about this new Constitution of India is that there is nothing Indian in it', and did the RSS not clearly stand against the main maker of the Indian Constitution i.e. Babasaheb Dr. Ambedkar ji and in support of Manusmriti?" the Congress chief said.

The Congress' reaction came after Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that the government has decided to observe June 25 as 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' to commemorate the "massive contributions" of those who endured inhuman pains during the period.
Congress General Secretary (In-charge, Communications), Jairam Ramesh said, "Yet another headline grabbing exercise in hypocrisy by the non-biological PM who had imposed an undeclared Emergency for ten long years before the people of India handed him a decisive personal, political, and moral defeat on June 4, 2024 - which will go down in history as Modi Mukti Diwas." "This is a non-biological PM who has subjected the Constitution of India and its principles, values, and institutions to systematic assault," Ramesh said on X.
"This is a non-biological PM whose ideological parivar had rejected the Constitution of India in Nov 1949 on the grounds that it did not derive inspiration from Manusmriti. This is a non-biological PM for whom democracy means only demo-kursi," the Congress leader said.
In the Lok Sabha polls, the BJP with 240 seats fell short of a majority but the NDA secured the mandate with 293 seats. The Congress bagged 99 seats while the INDIA bloc got 234 seats. Following the polls, two Independents who won have also pledged support to the Congress, taking the INDIA bloc tally to 236.
The results of the Lok Sabha polls was declared on June 4.
Later, Ramesh also shared the video from Prime Minister Modi's November 8, 2016, speech when he announced demonetisation.
"From now on, every year on 8th November, people of India will celebrate 'Aajivika Hatya Diwas (Livelihood Killing Day)'. Its gazette notification will also be issued soon," Ramesh said in another post on X.
A gazette notification issued on Friday by the Union Home Ministry said the government has declared June 25 as 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' to pay tribute to "all those who suffered and fought against the gross abuse of power during the period of Emergency".

Congress has claimed that the idea behind relocating the statues is to ensure they are not in a prominent place where the MPs could conduct peaceful and democratic protests.

The Congress on Sunday slammed the move to relocate statues within the Parliament premises as "arbitrary and unilateral", with party chief Mallikarjun Kharge saying such decisions made without proper discussion are against the rules and traditions of Parliament.
The opposition party has claimed that the idea behind relocating the statues of Mahatma Gandhi, B R Ambedkar and Chhatrapati Shivaji among others is to ensure they are not in a prominent place where the MPs could conduct peaceful and democratic protests.
Rajya Sabha chairperson and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Sunday inaugurated the 'Prerna Sthal' in the Parliament complex which now houses these statues of national icons and freedom fighters that were earlier at different places on the premises.
While the Congress criticised the decision to remove the statues from their existing place, the Lok Sabha secretariat said their earlier placement had made it difficult for the visitors to see them properly.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla also told reporters that discussions were held from time to time with different stakeholders on the issue and added that "there is no need to indulge in politics on this".
In a statement on the relocation of statues of major leaders in the Parliament House Complex, Congress president Kharge said removing the statues arbitrarily, without any consultation, violates the basic spirit of democracy.
"The statues of many great leaders, including Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, have been removed from their prominent places in the Parliament House Complex and relocated to a separate corner. Removing these statues arbitrarily, without any consultation, violates the basic spirit of our democracy," he said.
There are about 50 such statues or busts throughout the entire Parliament House, he noted.
"The statues of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar were situated in prominent locations and of other major leaders at appropriate locations after due deliberation and consideration. Each statue and its location across the Parliament House complex holds immense value and significance," he said.
Kharge stressed that the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in a meditative posture located right in front of the old Parliament Building held immense significance for India's democratic polity.
"Members paid their respects at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi imbibing within themselves the spirit of Mahatma. It is at this place that members often conducted peaceful and democratic protests, drawing strength from their presence," he said.
The statue of Babasaheb Ambedkar too had been placed at a vantage point conveying the powerful message that Babasaheb is extolling the generations of parliamentarians to steadfastly hold on to values and principles enshrined in the Constitution of India, Kharge said.
"Incidentally, during my student days in the mid-60s, I was in the forefront, demanding the installation of a statue of Babasaheb in the precincts of the Parliament House," he said.
"Such concerted efforts eventually resulted in the installation of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar's statue at the place where it had hitherto been placed.
"The prior placement of Babasaheb statue also facilitated the seamless movement of people paying their tributes to him on his birth and death anniversaries," he said.
All this has now been brought "to naught in an arbitrary and unilateral manner", Kharge said.
He pointed out that there is a dedicated panel on installing portraits and statues of national leaders and MPs in the Parliament House Complex - "Committee on the Installation of Portraits and Statues of National Leaders and Parliamentarians in the Parliament House Complex - which includes MPs from both Houses.
However, the committee has not been reconstituted since 2019, he said.
"Such decisions made without any proper discussion and deliberation with relevant stakeholders are against the rules and traditions of our Parliament," Kharge said.
Ahead of the inauguration of 'prerna sthal', Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said that according to the Lok Sabha website, Parliament's Committee on Portraits and Statues last met on December 18, 2018 and it was not even reconstituted during the 17th Lok Sabha (2019-2024) which also functioned for the first time without the Constitutional post of Deputy Speaker.
"Today, a major reconfiguration of statues in the Parliament complex is being inaugurated. Clearly it is a decision taken by the ruling regime unilaterally," he said.
"Its sole objective is NOT to have statues of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr Ambedkar--traditional sites of peaceful, legitimate and democratic protests--right next to where Parliament actually meets," Ramesh alleged in a post on X.
The Mahatma Gandhi statue has thus been displaced not just once but twice, he said.
Ramesh added that the Ambedkar Jayanti celebrations will not have the same scale and significance in the Parliament complex, given that his statue no longer occupies a distinctive place.
Addressing reporters here, Birla asserted that discussions were held from time to time with different stakeholders on the relocation of statues as such decisions were within the purview of the Office of the Lok Sabha Speaker.
"None of the statues have been removed, they have been relocated. There is no need to indulge in politics on this," the Lok Sabha Speaker said when asked about the opposition criticism of the relocation of the statues.
"From time to time, I have been discussing these issues with different stakeholders. People were of the view that having these statues at one place will help disseminate information about their lives and achievements in a better way," Birla said.
The Lok Sabha secretariat has said the 'Prerna Sthal' has been constructed so that the dignitaries and other visitors coming to the Parliament House Complex could conveniently see and pay tributes to these statues in one place.
"An action plan has been made to make the life stories and messages of these great Indians available to the visitors through new technology," it said.&nbsp;

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, "Remember May 28th, 2023? It was the day that Narendra Modi walked into the new Parliament building with the Sengol for which August 15th 1947 history was fabricated 'to not only justify Modi's pretensions of being Samrat but also to appeal to the Tamil electorate." "That day itself, I had exposed Modi's fakery using archival material," he said.
"We now know the outcome of that drama. The Sengol remains a respected symbol of Tamil history but the Tamil electorate and indeed India's electorate has rejected Mr. Modi's pretensions," Ramesh said.
The Congress leader claimed that Modi has suffered a huge personal, political, and moral defeat.
Modi has been forced to bow to the Constitution that he has subverted in the last decade, Ramesh said.
"A vastly diminished 'one-third' Pradhan Mantri, now lacking all legitimacy, has managed to get himself sworn this evening, as the leader of the Narendra Destructive Alliance (NDA)," he said.
Modi is set to be sworn-in this evening. The dignitaries and special invitees attending the ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Sunday evening include leaders from India's neighbourhood and the Indian Ocean Region.
Though the BJP could not get a majority on its own in the recent Lok Sabha polls, the party-led National Democratic Alliance secured 293 out of 543 seats. The Congress got 99 seats in the polls. The majority mark in the lower house is 272.
In another post on X, Ramesh took a swipe at Modi over his visit to Rajghat this morning.
"Aap track record dekhiye: His ideological brotherhood created such a toxic environment of hostility and hatred that it resulted in the cold-blooded murder of the Mahatma on January 30th, 1948." "He (Modi) never pulls up his colleagues who make Nathuram Godse into some sort of a hero. He displaces Mahatma Gandhi's statue in Parliament House - not once but twice," Ramesh said.
"He (Modi) falsely claims that before the Attenborough film of 1982 on him Mahatma Gandhi was not known to the world. He demolishes and destroys Gandhian institutions in Varanasi, Ahmedabad, and elsewhere. Breath-taking hypocrisy!" Ramesh said.

Out of the total 26 seats in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state, Geniben Thakor of the Congress clinched Banaskantha constituency from BJP's Rekhaben Chaudhari. Thakor won the seat by a margin of over 30,000 votes.&nbsp;
In the 2014 and 2019 general elections, the BJP had a clean sweep in the state.&nbsp;
According to reports, Thakor is a two-time MLA and the only woman representative of the Congress in the Gujarat Assembly.&nbsp;

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar on Monday dared the opposition to share evidence of allegations that returning officers and district magistrates were influenced to vitiate the poll process so the panel could take action against them.

"You cannot spread a rumour and bring everyone under a cloud of suspicion," Kumar said.
The Commission had made preparations to deal with any foreign attempt to influence the poll process but these allegations have come from within the country itself, he said in an apparent dig at the opposition.
Taking exception to allegations that district magistrates were being influenced, the CEC said, "Those levelling allegations should say which DM was influenced and we will punish them. They should tell us before the counting process begins." Congress leader Jairam Ramesh had claimed that Home Minister Amit Shah had been calling district magistrates and collectors and indulging in "blatant and brazen" intimidation.
District magistrates and collectors are the returning officers of their respective districts during election.
Ramesh claimed that Shah had already spoken with 150 district magistrates or collectors.
Kumar had accepted all the demands made by the multi-party delegation that met the panel on Sunday, and asserted that the issues raised by them were part of the election process going on for seven decades.
"Some demands were made by a multi-party delegation. We have agreed to all the demands," Kumar said, indicating that most of the issues raised by the multi-party delegation were part of election manuals.
"This process has been going on for 70 years... We have instructed every RO/ARO. These are our orders and they are no joke&hellip; Everyone has been instructed to follow the handbook/manuals," Kumar said.
Kumar admitted that the Election Commission had failed to counter the mischievous narratives spread during the poll process.

Sam Pitroda resigned from the post of Indian Overseas Congress Chairman, after his illustration of India's racial diversity landed Congress in trouble back home.
In an interview with The Statesman, Pitroda said Indians from East, West, North and South resembled Chinese, Arabs, Whites and Africans.
His remarks went viral and triggered a political firestorm, with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the BJP's all-out attack on the Congress. Modi slammed Pitroda's comments as "racist" and asserted that people will not tolerate the attempt to insult them on the basis of their skin colour.
The Congress swiftly distanced itself from his words and criticised those as "most unfortunate and unacceptable". According to a PTI report, Pitroda stepped down, apparently after being nudged by the party leadership.
Pitroda was applauding how a country as diverse as India has stayed together for 75 years.
"People in the east look like the Chinese, people in the west look like the Arabs, people in the north look like, maybe, white and people in the south look like Africans. It does not matter. All of us are brothers and sisters. We respect different languages, different religions, different customs, different food," he said.
But Pitroda's choice of ethnic and racial identities in the analogy drew severe criticism from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
At his rallies in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, Modi said he is livid with the racial profiling of Indians by the US-based "philosopher and uncle of shehzada (Rahul Gandhi)", and linked the Congress's opposition to Droupadi Murmu's presidential bid to its mindset, which saw her as an "African" because of her dark skin.
He asked the Congress chief ministers of Karnataka and Telangana, Siddaramaiah and A Revanth Reddy respectively, if they will accept "such an accusation".
The prime minister asked if Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin will snap the DMK's ties with the Congress for Tamil pride. "Do they have the guts?" he asked.
Pitroda's controversial comments came soon after his reference to inheritance tax in the United States while discussing the Congress's Lok Sabha poll manifesto gave the ruling BJP a potent handle to accuse the opposition party of eying citizens' assets as part of its "redistribution of wealth" policy.
As a row erupted, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said on X: "The analogies drawn by Mr Sam Pitroda in a podcast to illustrate India's diversity are most unfortunate and unacceptable. The Indian National Congress completely dissociates itself from these analogies." Ramesh later announced Pitroda's decision to resign and that the Congress president has accepted it.

In the aftermath of Rahul Gandhi's decision to contest the Lok Sabha elections from Rae Bareli instead of Amethi, sparking BJP criticism, the Congress retaliated on Tuesday, accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of strategically placing Union Home Minister Amit Shah in a "safe seat."
During a press conference, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera alleged that while Amit Shah chose to contest from Gandhinagar, a stronghold for the saffron party, 16 other candidates were coerced into withdrawing their candidature.
Khera went on to highlight a candidate named Jitendra Chauhan, who claimed to have withdrawn his candidacy due to threats to his life.
"The Home Minister is responsible for the safety of every citizen, yet a candidate contesting against him received death threats... This raises serious concerns about the sanctity of our democratic process," Khera stated during the press conference.

Giving a reply to Radhika Khera's allegation, Congress leader Supriya Shrinate dismissed the claims, saying that she also visited Ram Mandir along with other Congress party leaders like Avinash Pandey, Ajay Rai, Akhilesh Pratap Singh, Deepender Hooda, and Aradhana Mishra Mona.
