Kallakurichi hooch tragedy: actor Suriya blames successive governments for promoting drinking

Actor Suriya has strongly criticised the Tamil Nadu government following the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy, which claimed more than 50 lives. He accused successive governments of promoting alcohol addiction in the state and called for immediate long-term solutions to prevent such incidents.

In a heartfelt message, Suriya expressed his shock over the high death toll, stating that such losses are rare even during natural disasters. He empathized with the families of the victims, noting the deep emotional impact of their cries.

Suriya acknowledged the government's quick response to the crisis but emphasized that short-term fixes are not enough. He pointed out a similar incident in Viluppuram last year, where 22 people died from toxic liquor, indicating a lack of effective measures since then.

Blaming the government for perpetuating alcohol consumption through state-run liquor outlets (TASMAC), Suriya urged Chief Minister MK Stalin to implement comprehensive rehabilitation programs for alcohol addicts, similar to the government's efforts in education. He stressed that only long-term, visionary actions could prevent future tragedies.

Suriya and his wife Jyothika run the Agaram Foundation, which supports education for underprivileged children. The actor has previously spoken out on social issues, including his criticism of the NEET exam, which he believes is unfair to rural students.

In his statement, Suriya called the Kallakurichi incident alarming and underscored the urgent need for effective prohibition policies, beyond mere election promises. He also recommended establishing rehabilitation centres in every district to help addicts recover and prevent further deaths.
