New York City is sinking at an average rate of 1 to 2 millimetres every year; know why

New research has shown that the city of New York is sinking due to the weight of its skyscrapers. According to the geological report, NYC’s more than 1 million buildings weigh about 1.7 trillion pounds, drowning the city into the surrounding water at an average rate of 1 to 2 millimeters every year.

According to lead researcher and geologist Tom Parsons of the United States Geological Survey, areas like Lower Manhattan is the most at risk, followed by both Brooklyn and Queens.

The constant tectonic shifts, rise in sea level, increasing hurricane intensity and greenhouse gas emissions are the major factors behind the accelerating problem along coastal and riverfront areas of the city.
