Food safety experts, including microbiologist Kali Kniel from the University of Delaware and food chemist Dr. Bryan Quoc Le based in Washington, have disclosed some grocery store or departmental stores items we must avoid.

3 food items to avoid from grocery stores

      Raw sprouts

Packaged raw sprouts from grocery stores or online apps can be more risky than beneficial to health. While complete avoidance isn't necessary, it's important to note that they can serve as favorable environments for bacteria such as salmonella and E. coli to thrive, as stated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. However, this is primarily a concern when consuming them raw; the CDC advises cooking them thoroughly until they are 'steaming hot' to effectively eliminate germs and lower the risk of food poisoning.

      Raw and unpasteurized milk

Raw and unpasteurized milk poses health risks primarily due to the potential presence of harmful bacteria, such as Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria. Unlike pasteurized milk, which undergoes a heating process that kills these pathogens, raw milk remains untreated. Consumption of raw milk carries a higher risk of foodborne illnesses, which can lead to symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and, in severe cases, can result in hospitalization or even death, especially for vulnerable populations like children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Public health agencies, including the FDA and CDC, strongly advise against consuming raw milk to minimize these health hazards and ensure the safety of dairy products.

      Pre-cut and packaged fruits/veggies

In our hectic schedule, convenience often leads to a preference for pre-cut and ready-made fruits and vegetables. However, experts advise rinsing pre-cut fruits or vegetables thoroughly before consumption. These pre-cut fruits and vegetables might get contaminated by raw meat, poultry, and seafood stored together in shops.
