Golagappa also known as panipuri is one of the most loved street foods in India. Known by different names in different states or regions, it is loved equally by everyone between the ages 8-80.

Indian origin contestant, Sumeet Saigal made golgappa on Master chef Australia and left the judges surprised. But do you know how golgappa originated?

Golgappa has a connection to 'The Mahabharata'

According to an ancient belief, after Draupadi’s marriage with the Pandavas, her mother in law Kunti gave her a task to make a satiating meal from some left over vegetables and kneaded wheat flour (atta). Kunti wanted to test her newly wedded daughter in law if she could manage to live in meagre situation as the Pandavas had been exiled.

Draupadi obeyed Kunti’s orders and cooked a unique dish for everyone that no one had ever heard or seen before. She prepared a tangy water with tamarind and spices and boiled veggies and potatoes to make a spicy filling for the puris. Even the puris she made were tiny and not of the usual size. Everyone loved this newly invented dish and that’s how our beloved golgappa came into being. According to beliefs the Pandavas were living in the Magadha region of South Bihar and hence, golgappa is said to have originated from there.

However, there is no exact mention of this incident in any scriptures. As the two important ingredients of golgappa, potatoes and water came to India about 300-400 years ago, historians believe that the dish was originated in Magadha, which is present-day South Bihar.
