The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has asked all e-commerce companies to remove drinks and beverages from 'health drinks' from their sites and platforms. This also includes the popular health drink Bournvita. Here is what we know.

Bournvita, beverages banned from e-commerce sites

"National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), a statutory body constituted under Section (3) of the Commission of Protection of Child Rights (CPCR) Act, 2005 after its inquiry under Section 14 of CRPC Act 2005 concluded that there is no 'health drink' defined under FSS Act 2006, rules and regulations submitted by FSSAI and Mondelez India Food Pvt Ltd," the ministry said in a notification, dated April 10.

On April 2, FSSAI asked all e-commerce companies to ensure appropriate categorisation of food products sold on their websites. This comes a year after Bournvita entered into a controversy because of its high content of sugar levels.

FSSAI has clarified that there are no defined or standardized criteria for the term 'health drink' under the FSS Act 2006 or its associated rules and regulations.

"Therefore, FSSAI has advised all e-commerce companies to promptly rectify this misclassification by removing or de-linking such drinks or beverages from the category of ‘health drinks/energy drinks’ on their websites and placing such products in the appropriate category as provided under the extant law," a statement read.
