According to a study published in the British Medical Journal, the addition of dairy foods into the daily diet of older people living in residential care facilities can reduce the risk of fractures. Researchers also found that calcium-rich foods such as milk, yogurt and cheese can help prevent bone fragility from falls.

The two-year trial led by the University of Melbourne and Austin Health included 7195 residents from 60 Victorian aged-care facilities. Older adults living in residential care often have low calcium and protein intake, which can lead to weak bones.

According to the team, dairy food intake from 2 serves per day to 3.5 serves per day can significantly lower the risk of fractures.

As per the findings, there was a 33 percent reduction in all fractures with a significant reduction apparent between three and five months after the trial began.
