Twenty minutes of exercise a day may help keep the doctor away, especially when it comes to heart health, according to a new study.

Exercise at an older age is always recommended so that older people can avoid contracting diseases due to lack of physical movement. Recent research has suggested that twenty minutes of daily moderate to vigorous exercise in old age may prevent heart disease, including heart failure.

Moderate physical activity includes walking and fishing, while vigorous physical activity includes gardening, gym workouts, cycling, dancing and swimming.

Researchers examined 3,099 people aged 65 or older for a period of 7 years. Detailed medical history, physical examination, scans and blood tests of the participants were carried out during the study.

As per the findings, maintaining an active lifestyle over time is associated with lower risks of cardiovascular disease and death in both men and women participants. Even a small amount of physical activity can be beneficial for older people, but if undertaken early rather than late, study authors concluded.
