      The prostate gland is a small walnut-shaped organ that produces seminal fluid in men. The prostate gland produces seminal fluid, which nourishes and transports sperm. The prostate gland performs the essential function of keeping the sperm viable through its fluid, which is needed for successful conception.

      However, there is a high chance that men can develop cancer in this organ. This cancer easily spreads to other nearby organs such as bladder or rectum. The exact cause of prostate cancer is unknown, but several factors may increase the risk of developing it. Let us learn more about the signs, symptoms and risk factors of this cancer.

      Silent signs of prostate cancer

      Difficulty urinating

      One of the early symptoms of prostate cancer is difficulty urinating, which may include weak urine stream, frequent urination especially at night (nocturia), difficulty starting or stopping urine flow.

      Blood in urine

      Another sign of prostate cancer is blood in the urine. Additionally, blood may also be present in semen, which is known as hematospermia.

      Erectile dysfunction

      Prostate cancer can affect erectile function, leading to difficulties achieving or maintaining an erection. While erectile dysfunction can have various causes, it may be associated with prostate cancer.

      Pelvic discomfort

      Prostate cancer may cause discomfort or pain in the pelvic area, lower back, hips, or thighs. This pain may vary in intensity and may worsen over time as the cancer progresses or spreads beyond the prostate gland.

      General symptoms

      In addition to specific symptoms related to the urinary and reproductive systems, prostate cancer may also cause general symptoms such as fatigue, unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite.

      Who are at a risk?

      Men over the age of 50 are at a higher risk of getting a prostate cancer. Men with a family history of prostate cancer, especially in close relatives like a father or brother, have a higher risk. Ethnicity also plays a role as African American men have a higher risk of developing prostate cancer than men of other ethnicities.

      You should avoid too much red meat and high-fat dairy products. Obesity, lack of exercise, and smoking may also contribute to an increased risk.

      Lifestyle changes to make to reduce prostate cancer risk

      One must always consume a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and low in red meat and high-fat dairy products. You should also engage in regular physical activity can help maintain a healthy weight and reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Reduce alcohol intake as it is associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer.
