World Hepatitis Day 2023: Know why and on whose birth anniversary this day is celebrated annually

World Hepatitis Day is observed each year on 28 July to raise awareness of viral hepatitis, and this year’s theme is ‘One life, One liver’.

What is Hepatitis?

Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver. It may be caused by a viral infection, alcohol consumption and several health conditions.

There are five main viral classifications of hepatitis A, B, C, D and E. Different viruses are responsible for each type of viral hepatitis.

Common symptoms of hepatitis

People with acute hepatitis include symptoms like fatigue, flu-like symptoms, dark urine, loss of appetite, yellow skin and eyes.

Significance of World Hepatitis Day

World Hepatitis Day brings attention to the importance of understanding hepatitis, its transmission, prevention, and the potential consequences if left untreated. Many people around the world are unaware of the risks and impact of hepatitis, and this day aims to bridge that knowledge gap.

Why is World Hepatitis Day celebrated on July 28th

World Hepatitis Day is observed annually on July 28, the birthday of Dr. Baruch Blumberg. He discovered the hepatitis B virus in 1967 and two years later developed the first hepatitis B vaccine and for these achievements won the Nobel Prize in Medicine in the year 1976.
