Queen Elizabeth death: Britian's longest-reigning monarch dies at 96

Jacinda Ardern, New Zealand’s prime minister, has remembered Queen Elizabeth II as “extraordinary” and announced a period of national mourning in remarks she made as New Zealanders woke to the news of the monarch’s death. 

Under New Zealand's constitutional arrangements, the queen was also New Zealand's monarch and head of state.

Leading NRI industrialist Lord Swraj Paul lauded the outstanding achievements of Queen Elizabeth II during her 70 years reign.

Expressing his heartfelt condolences at the passing away of the Queen, Lord Paul said, "She had been our longest-ever reigning monarch. It is an extraordinary achievement to have presided with such dignity and grace for seven decades.

Russian President Vladimir Putin offered his condolences to King Charles III following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, wishing the new monarch "courage and resilience" after his mother's passing.

"The most important events of the United Kingdom's recent history are inextricably bound with the name of Her Majesty. For many decades Elizabeth II rightfully enjoyed her subjects' love and respect as well as authority on the world stage," Putin said, according to a Kremlin statement.

Queen Elizabeth II's eldest son Charles, who is the new king of Britain, has said that the death of his mother is a moment of the "greatest sadness" for him and all members of his family.

During this period of mourning and change, he said his family and he will be comforted and sustained by knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which the queen was so widely held.

Queen Elizabeth II, the UK's longest-serving monarch, died on Thursday at Balmoral Castle in Scotland after reigning for 70 years. She was 96. Her death brings to an end the longest reign in the history of the United Kingdom, and one of the longest reigns by any head of state.

The Queen died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, after battling age-related health issues. She will be succeeded by her eldest son Charles.
