According to predictions by most exit polls, it is the Aam Aadmi Party which is headed for victory in the northern state. The exit poll conducted by News24 and Today's Chanakya predicted a clean sweep for the party, claiming it is headed to win 100 seats in the 117-member House. The majority mark is 59. The Aaj Tak-Axis My India exit poll has predicted 76 to 90 seats for the AAP, while&nbsp;Republic PMARQ says the party will win 62 to 70 seats. ABP CVoter predicts 51 to 61 for the AAP while Times Now Veto says the party might win 70. A day before the Assembly election exercise in five states kicks off with first phase of voting in Uttar Pradesh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi listed the BJP's achievements, and the Opposition's faults in an interview.
Speaking to ANI editor Smita Prakash, PM Modi said that all five states going to polls have a pro-BJP wave, guaranteeing the party's victory.

When asked about the decision to repeal the three contentious farm laws, PM Modi said that the laws were introduced in the interest of farmers, but the repeal was announced in the interest of the nation.
Regarding his recent speeches in Parliament attacking the Congress and citing old speeches of Jawaharlal Nehru, Modi said that his comments were aimed at India's first Prime Minister, and not Rahul Gandhi's ancestor. He also took a jibe at Gandhi for skipping Parliament, and then asking for answers from the government.
Accusing Opposition parties, from Jammu & Kashmir to Tamil Nadu, of nepotism and dynasty politics, PM Modi said that this trend was dangerous for democracy and was preventing talented individuals from joining politics and serving the nation.
Uttar Pradesh, Manipur, Uttarakhand, Punjab, and Goa are going to polls with voting between February 10 and March 7. Results will be announced on March 10.

Punjab --- the land of five rivers.
The Sutlej, Beas, Ravi, Chenab and Jhelum define the geography.
But it's the three regions of the state, again carved out by the rivers, that define its politics.
All through the election season you will hear Malwa, Majha and Doaba. The three regions that make up Punjab politically. All the three regions have their distinct social, economic and political identity.
The Majha region of present-day Punjab falls between the Ravi and the Beas. Then begins Doaba, which literally means the land between two rivers. It starts from the Beas and goes on till the Sutlej. Beyond the Sutlej lies the Malwa region, the biggest of the three.
First let's take a closer look at Malwa region:
Malwa: The Political Monopoly
It's the largest region with 69 of Punjab's 117 Assembly seats.
All but two CMs of the state have been from this region.
Current CM Channi, former CMs Captain Amarinder Singh and Badal come from Malwa.
2017: Congress won 40 of 69 seats, AAP made an impressive debut winning 18 seats in the region. 
Akalis lost their traditional stronghold and could only win 8 seats in Malwa.
Aam Aadmi Party won all of its 4 Lok Sabha seats in 2014 from Malwa region.
Malwa was also the epicentre of the year-long farm agitation. According to a Punjab University study, around 80 per cent of the 700-odd farmers who died during the protests belonged to the Malwa region.
Glaring inequality in landholdings with big landlords holding hundreds of acres while majority make do with little landholdings.
Majha: Where Religion and Politics Mix
Majha region is nestled between Ravi and Beas rivers, on border with Pakistan.
Majha means ‘in the middle’, and it used to be the centre of undivided Punjab before Partition.
With 25 Assembly seats, Majha is the hotbed of "panthic" or religious politics in the state.
Home to Golden Temple in Amritsar and Kartarpur Corridor that connects to Darbar Sahib in Pakistan.
Region has traditionally been a stronghold of Akali Dal, but that changed in 2017
In 2017,  the Congress won 22 seats, and the SAD was marginalised to just 2.
AAP is yet to open its account in the region.

Akali Dal patriarch, five-time chief minister.
He is now fighting his 13th Assembly election. He hopes to retain the Lambi seat for the sixth consecutive time. Badal has been representing the predominantly rural constituency since 1997.
An 11-time MLA, Badal started his political career in 1947 as the sarpanch of his native Badal village.
Born on December 8, 1927, Badal won his first Assembly poll as a Congress candidate in undivided Punjab in 1957.
He then switched to the Akali camp and lost the first election of the divided Punjab in 1967 to COngress candidate by a margin of 57 votes.
That was the only defeat Badal faced in his over seven decades of political life.
Apart from being CM for record 5 times, Badal also has the ​distinction of being Punjab's youngest and the oldest chief minister.
He first took oath as chief minister at the age of 42 in 1970, becoming the youngest Punjab CM.
In 2012, at the age of 84, Badal was sworn in as the oldest CM of the state. It was his fifth innings as CM.

Meet the grand old man of <a href="https://www.editorji.com/elections/punjab-elections" target="_blank">Punjab politics</a>:&nbsp;
Parkash Singh Badal.
Akali Dal patriarch, five-time chief minister.
He is now fighting his 13th Assembly election. He hopes to retain the Lambi seat for the sixth consecutive time. Badal has been representing the predominantly rural constituency since 1997.
An 11-time MLA, Badal started his political career in 1947 as the sarpanch of his native Badal village.
Born on December 8, 1927, Badal won his first Assembly poll as a Congress candidate in undivided Punjab in 1957.
He then switched to the Akali camp and lost the first election of the divided Punjab in 1967 to Congress candidate by a margin of 57 votes.
That was the only defeat Badal faced in his over seven decades of political life.
Apart from being CM for record 5 times, Badal also has the&nbsp;​distinction of being Punjab's youngest and the oldest chief minister.
He first took oath as chief minister at the age of 42 in 1970, becoming the youngest Punjab CM.
In 2012, at the age of 84, Badal was sworn in as the oldest CM of the state. It was his fifth innings as CM.
But age is just a number for Parkash Singh Badal. Even at 94, he is on foot meeting people in his constituency and going door to door.

 Preceding Gandhi's arrival in the state, Sidhu had declared that all would abide by the leader's decision. Gandhi reached the venue in a car driven by another Congress veteran believed to be miffed with the high command - Sunil Jakhar. Meanwhile, Channi and Sidhu sat in the rear seat.

 At the venue where Gandhi announced his decision, scenes of bonhomie were seen between Channi, Sidhu, and Jakhar. During Sidhu's emotional speech, he reportedly received a hug from Channi. Both Sidhu and Jakhar reportedly praised Gandhi for making Channi the CM after Amarinder Singh resigned. Channi is Punjab's first CM who belongs to the Dalit community. At the event, Gandhi reiterated that the choice for the CM candidate was made according to tele-voting by party workers and the people of the state. However, just days earlier, the voices weren't so harmonious.

 Recently, Sidhu was quoted as saying at a gathering that "those at the top want a weak CM, who will dance to their tunes". While some considered this as an attack on the Gandhis, Sidhu's team insisted that he was referring to the Modi government at the Centre preferring a subservient administration in the state. Also, amid the controversy over the arrest of Channi's nephew in an Enforcement Directorate case, Sidhu had reportedly said that people want someone 'honest' as the CM.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met a delegation of Sikhs and Hindus from Afghanistan on February 19.
The meeting occurred a day before Punjab votes to elect its next government. The delegation called on the PM at his official residence in Delhi.
They thanked Modi for bringing in the Citizenship Amendment Act which promised Indian citizenship to minority communities from some of India's neighbours, including Afghanistan, if they came to the country before a cut-off date.
The delegation gifted PM Modi with a traditional Afghan turban, which Modi said would make former Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai very happy.
The Indian government had also evacuated many Sikhs and Hindus from Afghanistan after the Taliban took over the country.
The delegation also thanked the PM for bringing the 'swaroop' of Guru Granth Sahib from Afghanistan last year.
A day earlier, PM Modi had met eminent personalities from the Sikh community, though the BJP maintained that the meeting should not be connected to the elections.

Hours after Bhagwant Mann sworn in as the chief minister of Punjab on Wednesday, reports claimed that Harbhajan Singh is among the names which the party is pondering upon for Rajya Sabha berth.
Singh is also likely to be made the head of a proposed sports university in the state, as per reports.
On March 10, Bhajji had congratulated Mann and wrote, “Congratulations to Aam Aadmi Party and my friend #BhagwantMann on becoming our new chief minister… great to hear that he will be taking oath as the new CM in Bhagat Singh’s village Khatkarkalan…”

Along with the defeat of many of its biggest faces, another state slipped out of the Congress' grasp. From a last-minute reshuffle at the top, to picking a Dalit CM - the Congress leadership tried many tactics, but couldn't secure a second term.
Well before the elections, infighting gripped Congress' Punjab unit, with Navjot Singh Sidhu leading a rebellion against then-CM Amarinder Singh. The tussle culminated in Amarinder quitting as CM, and eventually leaving the party. However, instead of Sidhu, the CM crown passed on to Charanjit Singh Channi.
It was seen as a move to secure the support of the sizeable Dalit population in Punjab. Meanwhile, Sidhu handled the reins of the party's state unit.

Aam Aadmi Party(AAP) chief ministerial candidate Bhagwant Mann on Thursday said the oath-taking ceremony of the new Punjab cabinet will be held at Khatkarkalan in Nawanshahr district, the ancestral village of legendary freedom fighter Bhagat Singh.
"The oath-taking ceremony will not be held&nbsp;at Raj Bhawan, but at Khatkarkalan. The date will be announced later," Mann said addressing party workers and supporters at Dhuri after the AAP appeared set for a clean sweep in <a href="https://www.editorji.com/elections/punjab-elections" target="_blank">Punjab</a> having taken lead in 91 of the 117 assembly seats after initial rounds of counting of votes.

He also said that no government office will carry photograph of the chief minister. Instead, photos of Bhagat Singh and Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar will be put on walls in government offices.
Appealing to people to work unitedly, he said those who did not vote for the APP need not worry as the government will work for all sections of the society.

The thrust areas for his government would be improving the condition of schools, health infrastructure, bringing back industry, making agriculture profitable, and improving sports infrastructure.
