CWG Day 2: Overnight Round-up - Women's hockey team beat Wales, TT team knocked out, boxing results

Day 2 of the Commonwealth Games 2022 saw weightlifters bring glory to the nation as India won 4 medals in all 4 weightlifting events. While Mirabai Chanbu clinched gold in the Women's 49kg category, Bindyarani Devi and Sanket Sargar won a silver each in the Women's 55kg and Men's 55kg respectively. Gururaja Poojary settled for a bronze in the Men's 61kg category.

Hockey

Vandana Katariya scored a brace as the Indian women’s hockey team defeated Wales 3-1 on Saturday to record its second consecutive win in Pool A. The victory helped India take the top spot in the group standings.

Boxing

Tokyo Olympics Bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain cruised to the quarterfinals of the women's light middleweight category with an easy 5-0 win against Ariana Nicholson.

Shiva Thapa defeated Baloch Suleman in the first match of the men's 63.5 kg category via a unanimous 5-0 decision.

2018 CWG bronze medallist Mohammad Hussamuddin defeated his young South African opponent with the same margin in the men's 57kg category to move to the pre-quarterfinals.

It was tough luck for India’s Sanjeet Kumar though as he lost to Alo Leau of Samoa 3-2 in a split decision in the Men’s 92kg Heavyweight Boxing Round of 16

Table Tennis

Defending champions India fell to a shocking defeat at the hands of Malaysia and failed to book a semi-finals berth in women's Table Tennis. After Reeth Tennison and Sreeja Akula lost the opening match, Manika Batra and Sreeja Akula won their respective matches to give India a 2-1 lead. However, both Manika and Akula then lost their next games as Malaysia eventually won 3-2.

Squash

In squash, world number 15 Saurav Ghosal thrashed Shamil Wakeel of Sri Lanka 11-4, 11-4, 11-6 while Joshna Chinappa outclassed Meagan Best of Barbados in straight sets 11-8, 11-9, 12-10 to advance to the round of 16.

Other squash players didn't have great outings as Sunayna Sara Kuruvilla’s campaign ended after she lost to Malaysia's Aifa Azman and Ramit Tandon withdrew from the men's singles round of 32 match due to an injury.

14-year-old Anahat Singh lost 1-3 to Wales' Emily Whitlock in the Women's Singles Round of 32.

On the other hand, Abhay Singh pulled out of the Men's Singles Round of 32 match after sustaining a thigh injury during his second game against Scotland's Alan Clyne.

Badminton

India had a brilliant outing in badminton as the shuttles won their mixed team event against Australia 4-1 on Saturday. Heavyweights Kidambi Srikanth and PV Sindhu and the doubles pair of B Sumeeth Reddy and Chirag Chandrashekhar won their respective matches.

Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand then lost their match as Australia made it 3-1. However, Sumeeth Reddy and Ashwini Ponnappa beat Ying Xiang Lin and Gronya Somerville 21-14, 21-11 in the mixed doubles to complete a dominating show.
