In a much-needed triumph, Mumbai Indians (MI) clinched their first win of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, delivering an impressive 8-wicket victory over the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Monday.

Central to this success were standout performances from pacer Ashwani Kumar and opening batsman Ryan Rickelton.

However, this victory was bittersweet for fans, as former captain Rohit Sharma continued to underperform, managing just 13 runs off 12 balls, intensifying concerns about his form.

Former England skipper Michael Vaughan, speaking on Cricbuzz, voiced his concerns about Rohit's current predicament.

With leadership duties no longer on his shoulders at MI, Sharma is now being scrutinized purely on his batting prowess. Vaughan suggested that any player other than Rohit would likely face exclusion from the team with such statistics.

Expressing his bewilderment, Vaughan remarked, "It's puzzling how Rohit Sharma, deemed fit to lead the national team, isn't leading Mumbai. As Indian captain, he's done commendably, yet now he finds himself being utilized as an Impact Substitute by MI, often kept out of on-field responsibilities."

Since the onset of the 2025 season, Rohit's scores of 0, 8, and 13 have been underwhelming.

Vaughan emphasized that had Sharma still been at the helm as captain, his strategic acumen might have compensated for his lackluster form. However, in his current role purely as a batter, his contributions are falling short.

"Rohit’s numbers are simply not up to par," added Vaughan. "If he were anyone else, his spot might have been at risk. As captain, his leadership might overshadow his batting stats, but now, he needs to deliver with the bat," he stressed.

Vaughan urged an open dialogue between Rohit and the Mumbai management to devise a strategy for reinvigorating the former captain's performance.

"It's not about dropping him, but about reviving his form. As a senior player, his contributions are vital for the cohesion and success of the team," he explained.

Highlighting the importance of seasoned players, Vaughan pointed out, "Players like Trent Boult, Suryakumar Yadav, and Sharma are crucial for consistency. Their performance allows younger players to focus on enjoying the game, relieving pressure from needing to produce extraordinary plays."

Vaughan concluded by noting that addressing Sharma’s batting woes is imperative for MI's progress this season. "Rohit's current form is a significant concern. For Mumbai Indians to correct their course, his resurgence as a batsman is essential," he asserted.
