When asked about the Indian team without Pujara, Rahane, and Ravichandran Ashwin, Rohit had a brief slip of the tongue during the post-match press conference. "No, no, absolutely [I will miss them around]. Look, they have so much experience and have won so many matches for India. So, when you look around and they're not there... By the way, Ajinkya Rahane hasn't retired, aap mere ko marwaoge yar [you guys are going to get me in trouble]," Rohit remarked, laughing.
Rohit further clarified that the doors for Pujara and Rahane to return to the Test team are still open. "I&rsquo;m speaking as if all three have retired [chuckles]. Pujara hasn&rsquo;t announced his retirement. You mentioned all their names together, so I said that. They're not here right now, but I don&rsquo;t know, they can still come back, the door is open for them," he added.
Pujara and Rahane have been integral to India&rsquo;s middle order for over a decade. Pujara has played 103 Tests, accumulating 7,195 runs at an average of 43.60, with 19 centuries and 35 fifties. His highest score is 206*. Rahane, meanwhile, has featured in 85 Tests, scoring 5,077 runs at an average of 38.46, with 12 centuries and 26 fifties. His best score is 188.
However, both players&rsquo; performances have dipped significantly since India&rsquo;s historic victory at The Gabba in January 2021, which was pivotal to their series win in Australia. Since that iconic triumph, Pujara has played 22 more Tests, managing only 1,084 runs at a below-par average of 29.29, with just one century and seven fifties. Rahane's form has been similarly underwhelming, scoring only 606 runs in his last 16 Tests at an average of 22.44, with four half-centuries.
Despite his recent struggles in Tests, Rahane had a standout performance in IPL 2023 with Chennai Super Kings, scoring 326 runs in 11 innings at an impressive average of 32.60 and a strike rate of 172.48. His strong IPL form could potentially keep him in the mix longer than Pujara, who hasn&rsquo;t played in the IPL since 2014.
Pujara, however, has an exceptional first-class record, having scored 19,812 runs in 258 matches at an average of 52.00, including 61 centuries and 77 half-centuries, with a highest score of 352. His impressive domestic form keeps him in the conversation for a Test return, should the opportunity arise.

The decibel levels of "outside noise" about the duo's waning form have been rising for a while but the two contemporary megastars will be determined to lead the way on a ground where an Indian team showed resilience like never before back in 2021.
The numbers have been unflattering for the duo and they would be the first ones to admit that stats always don't lie.
Both Rohit and Kohli would still be a handful if they are asked to manage one of the two factors -- bounce or seam movement. The hosts served them a double whammy -- bounce with liberal sprinkling of grass for some extra seam movement.
They have the skills but the form, at least for the time being, has deserted the duo.
India's biggest issue has been terrible first innings batting during the past one year in both home and away fixtures with six totals of 150 or less during the period .
And Rohit and Kohli's first innings average in the 2024-25 season reads a rather poor 6.88 and 10 respectively.
Kohli has managed to get rid of some pressure with a hundred on the eased-up Perth track. But for Rohit, a captain's knock is needed not just to boost his confidence but also help him assert as a leader who shows the way.
Rohit is experienced enough to know that he can't always hit his way out of trouble against world-class operators like Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood, who is once again fit to play with Scott Boland making way for him.
Rohit has been a white ball colossus all his life but if he can lead the way at Gabba, he will forever be considered cricketing royalty. But for that, he first needs to decide his batting position.
He isn't trusting his defence enough and looks like a walking wicket if the ball darts around like it promises to at the Gabba.
Is he good to open or better off at No. 6 where if the top order plays a steady game, he can attack the old Kookaburra that hardly does anything?

As far as pace bowling is concerned, Akash Deep is blessed with more skills but skipper Rohit loved rookie Harshit Rana's big heart.

In case of Australia, their batting is no less fragile than that of India's.
Head has had a Rishabh Pant-like effect on his days, which often come against India.
But Steve Smith's form is a worry as the Indians have been bowling straight lines to him. Marnus Labuschagne laboured his way to a half-century in Adelaide but he still doesn't look his old prolific self.
Nathan McSweeney has showed grit during the first innings in Adelaide even though there is a long way to go before he becomes a surety in the side.
But one aspect that Australia has done well to figure out is India's reliance on Jasprit Bumrah's first spell with new Kookaburra. The home side knows that if it manages to play that out without too much damage, it can put pressure on other bowlers, who aren't half as good as the Gujarat slinger.

For 37-year-old Rohit, it has been close to six months that he took a break. The Mumbaikar played every series since the South Africa Test series in December-January, followed by Afghanistan T20Is, England Test series, IPL and the recently-concluded T20 World Cup.
"Both are automatic choices in ODI set up and the three 50 over games against England before the Champions Trophy is good enough practice for them. For next few months, they both will prioritize Tests and India will play 10 of them between September to January," a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
India play 2 Tests versus Bangladesh, followed by three against New Zealand before the big-ticket five Test Border Gavaskar Trophy against Australia Down Under.
It is understood that selectors as well as the seniors would like to manage their workload judiciously.
"The Champions Trophy will happen in mid February and they don't need to go for a week-long 3 match ODIs in Sri Lanka. If they want, they are most welcome but I guess they would want rest," the source added.

Despite an underwhelming season, Rohit ended as team's top-scorer with 417 runs including a hundred and half-century and got a standing ovation from a packed Wankhede. &ldquo;To be honest, there hasn't been many conversations about Rohit&rsquo;s future at all. I spoke to him last night or the night before, just to do a little review of the season,&rdquo; Boucher told the media here at the Wankhede Stadium after MI&rsquo;s 10th defeat this season on Friday.
&ldquo;I said, &lsquo;what's next for Rohit Sharma?&rsquo; He said to me, &lsquo;the (T20) World Cup&rsquo;. (And) that&rsquo;s perfect. That's all I need to know about what Rohit Sharma's future is." &ldquo;For me, he's a master of his own destiny. It's a big auction next season. Who knows what's going to happen? Boucher said Rohit had a season of two halves as a batter and despite finishing as highest run-scorers for MI, the former skipper would be disappointed with the outcome.
&ldquo;It was almost a season of two halves for him. He started off really well, was hitting the ball sweet in the nets, got a great hundred against CSK as well,&rdquo; Boucher said.
&ldquo;We honestly thought that he was on a great path for us to go out there and get some good runs for us. Unfortunately, it's just the nature of T20 as well,&rdquo; he added.
The former South Africa wicketkeeper-batter said Rohit continued to adapt to the new way of playing as an aggressive opener.
&ldquo;He went out there trying to be aggressive, which is the new way of playing as an opening batter. He got a couple of low scores, which unfortunately didn't help us in that particular situation as well,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;But he finished off with a fantastic knock &mdash; a competition of two halves for him. If you had to ask Ro, he'd probably say that it was an average season for him, especially with the start that he got off to,&rdquo; Boucher added.

Following Rohit Sharma's slump in form, many cricket experts have suggested that the Indian skipper must be rested for the remainder of IPL 2024 so that he turns up fresh for the T20 World Cup.
Michael Clarke also thinks the same. The former Australia captain told Star Sports, "Rohit, being the wise judge of his own performances, will undoubtedly be disappointed, especially considering his strong start. In my view, he might be feeling a bit fatigued as well.&rdquo;
&ldquo;A break to freshen up could do wonders for him, but as the Indian captain and a key player for Mumbai Indians, you're not getting a break. He's going to have to find form,&rdquo; Clarke continued.
Rohit played as an impact substitute in their match against Kolkata Knight Riders last week, raising some concerns for the Indian camp.
However, he played a full game against Sunrisers Hyderabad three days later.
Clarke said it is only a matter of time before Rohit gets back to his usual elements as a batter.
&ldquo;He was in a great mood. He's happy, which is a really good sign. He doesn't seem to be struggling with his timing; it's just a matter of getting out,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;With someone like Rohit, it's only a matter of time before he finds his form again. Hopefully, he stresses less and focuses on his game because he's too talented to keep missing out. He's at his best when he's timing the ball, rather than trying to force it,&rdquo; he added.
Clarke, meanwhile, also had praise in store for Rohit&rsquo;s deputy for the World Cup and MI skipper Hardik Pandya, who returned with 4-0-31-3 in their seven-wicket win over SRH on Monday.
&ldquo;In the last couple of games, he's been taking wickets with his bowling, making some adjustments along the way. For an all-rounder, success in one department boosts confidence across the board,&rdquo; Clarke said.
&ldquo;This aspect is crucial for Hardik Pandya's cricket in any format &mdash; he needs to contribute with the ball. Initially, he didn't bowl as much as expected or desired in the first half of this tournament. However, in the last three or four games, he's returned to form.&rdquo; Clarke also said Pandya used his bouncers effectively which is an essential weapon in his armoury.
&ldquo;He used his bouncer effectively, which I love seeing because it is a strong weapon in his arsenal. He executed the basics flawlessly, which is not only beneficial for Mumbai but also for Indian cricket as a whole, as it will enhance his overall performance,&rdquo; said Clarke.

Here are the excerpts from their press conference.
Rohit Sharma on not being Mumbai Indians captain Rohit: 'It's part of life, not everything will go your way. So, it's been a great experience. You know, before in my life, I have not been a captain and I have played under a lot of captains. So, &nbsp;it's no different to me. It's nothing new to me. you know, &nbsp;whatever's there, it's there. You go by it. Try and do whatever is required from you as a player and I have only tried to do that last month or so."
KL Rahul's omission from the squad Agarkar: "I mean, look, KL is a terrific player. We all know that. The thing we are obviously looking at is guys who bat in the middle. At the moment, KL is batting at the top. Rishabh, not opening the innings. We feel Sanju has the ability to come down the order if need be. Rishabh is batting at 5 for Delhi. That was more the thinking. It wasn't whether KL is better or these guys are better. It's about the slots that we needed and we felt these two are better equipped at this point or have spent bit more time in the latter part of the innings which might be needed in the World Cup. So, that's mainly the thinking. Two incredible players as well."
Going back to Rohit as captain for T20 World Cup Agarkar:" Generally, as selectors, you want a leader. Rohit has been a terrific leader. Just about 6 months between the 50-over World Cup and this one. We had to make some decisions at that point. There's no doubt about it. I know Hardik led a few series before that but Rohit's form in the World Cup, coupled with how much time we had. Rohit's a great player, it's not like it's forced upon us.&nbsp; Rohit: "Ajit wasn't part of the selection committee at that point. Actually in the past if you have noticed, &nbsp;whichever format happens, we give priority to that format. Especially us being where we are, a lot of players were given breaks. If there was not T20 World Cup, if there was a 50-over World Cup coming up, the focus was on the 50-over World Cup. That is why we had to miss the T20 format. It was the same situation when we went to Australia for the T20 World Cup. There were lot of ODIs being played, we missed a lot of ODIs that time. Test cricket was the constant format we kept playing. That's the format you don't want to miss and you give a lot of priority to that. That's what we discussed as the selection committee group and the coaches and some of the players as well. Ajit came little later into the picture so he would probably not know what was discussed with the earlier selection committee regarding who should be resting and who should not be rested."
Picking a team based on previous performances or IPL form? Agarkar: Little bit of a challenge. You try and plan before the IPL starts. We had our conversations over the last few months anyway. So, you have a fair idea of what you are looking for. &nbsp;Of course, there are some great performances through the IPL which you keep track of. Fitness levels of players. If you start getting swayed by 3-4 weeks of cricket, then there's something wrong in your thinking over the last few months. We were pretty clear with what we wanted to do. Of course all good performances are noticed and going forward, it will help us but we were very clear with our thinking. Rohit: "A lot of the ICC tournaments that we played in the recent past, we were fortunate we had Asia Cup before the T20 World Cup. We didn't have any games before the World Test Championship last year. Straight from IPL, we moved into that final. So, like Ajit said rightly, we started talking about what the combination will look like, what will be our playing XI, what the pitches are in West Indies. So, you sort of make your playing XI in the mind, and try and work around it. Look at players who can fill that particular role we are looking at. A lot of prep, the talk, the guys playing games, happens during the IPL. Lot of these guys have been playing this format for a while now. So, it's not like there's anyone new in this format. They all have been playing international cricket as well. They've been playing IPL. So, the talk of what our 15 is going to be like started much before IPL started. It is just few spots, few individuals we sort of looked into during IPL. Because IPL, the performances changes every day. Anyone will score a hundred, someone will get &nbsp;5 wickets - so you can't really change your planning and mindset around it. We had clarity on what our core group is going to be, our 70-80% of the squad and then a few changes if we had to make or pick someone, we were prepared for that as well."
Set combination for playing XI? Rohit: "All the options are open. I am going to West Indies and see what's right and what can be done because the pitches there, we have never played in New York. I don't know how the pitches are going to be there. We have played in West Indies. But again, in West indies as well, we are playing different venues every game. So, you got to first understand what the pitches will be like and what sort of combination you need based on the opposition combination as well, what kind of team they are playing as well. One thing we really looked at was our middle-overs hitting. Our top-order hitting has been alright, it's not been bad. There are options there as well but we wanted in the middle overs, someone to come and play that role where he can play freely without worrying about who's bowling and who's not. And we picked a guy Shivam Dube on what he has done in the IPL and also a few games he had played before the IPL as well. &nbsp;We spoke about it and we said, okay this is what we wanted. Again, there's no guarantee what our playing XI will be like. When we go there, we will see, we will analyse. Couple of practice games that we will play and see based on what the opposition comes up, what kind of combination they have, we will try and fit our playing XI based on that.&nbsp;
Hardik Pandya's back + form still a concern/Vice-captaincy Agarkar: "Not really. Nothing discussed with regards to vice-captaincy. Form, you want all guys to be in good form. He's come after a longish layoff. The good part that we have looked at is that he has gotten through all the games so far for MI. We have got another month and a little bit till we play our first game. We know he's doing that and the hope is that he keeps building on that form. As long as he stays fit, we know what he brings, how much balance he gives the team. I don't think there's a replacment for the things he can do as a cricketer at the moment, especially when it comes to the way he bowls, really gives balance. I think he'll give Rohit options to play different combinations. His fitness for us is critical and fortunately, he's gone okay in thsi IPL."
Rinku Singh missing out Agarkar: "It's probably the toughest thing that we have had to discuss. He (Rinku Singh) has done nothing wrong, not Shubman Gill also for that matter. It's again the combinations like Rohit said, we are not quite sure about conditions we'll get. So, we wanted to try and have enough options. There are couple of wrist spinners that were included in the squad - Chahal and Kuldeep, to give Rohit more options. Axar again, batting all-rounder or bowling all-rounder rather. It's just unfortunate. I don't think it has anything to do with Rinku Singh. It's not his fault that he missed out. It's more the 15 that we felt. Two keepers who are both terrific batters. There's already an extra batter sitting out, whoever doesn't play. So, we just thought of having another bowling option might be handy going forward in the tournament. He's still one of the travelling subs that's how close it was. Tough on him but at the end of the day you can only pick 15."
Rationale behind 4 spinners/3 pacers Rohit: "I don't want to go into too much detail. I am sure all the opposition captains will be listening to this. I will give you a very short answer to this. I definitely wanted 4 spinners. We have played a lot of cricket there. We know what the conditions are like. The match starts probably at 10 o' clock, 10:30 in the morning. So, there's a little bit of technical aspect involved in this. Maybe in the first press conference when I do in the West Indies, I will give more detail on this. Actually there is the reason for 4 spinners which I am not gonna say in public now. I won't say it now but I will say it there, what's the reason behind it. I wanted 4 spinners for sure and 3 spinners, Hardik being the 4th. So, you get that balance of seamers and spinners. Obviously, with 2 spinners being all-rounders, - Axar and Jaddu and then two attacking spinners, Kuldeep and Chahal, gives you a little bit of balance in your spin department as well. Like I said, based on the opposition composition, we can decide what to play with. There's a good chance Kuldeep and Chahal can play together. There's a good chance left-arm spinner can play along with Kuldeep or Kuldeep may not play, Chahal may not play. All sorts of things are possible.
Virat Kohli's Strike-rate Agarkar: Virat Kohli's strike rate - don't think we have been discussing it. Look, he's been in great form fortunately in the IPL. So, no concerns there at all. With regards to how it's going in the IPL, you're still going to a World Cup. It's still international cricket. There's still that gap there. So, you've got to prepare knowing there's that gap there. That's where experience does matter a lot. If the tournament turns out to be like how the IPL is where 220 plays 220, I think we've still got enough in the team, the balance or the power that you can match that. There's no real point overthinking. You try and take the positives that are happening in the IPL - form of of some of the guys, some of the newer guys coming through. At the end of the day, when you turn up for a World Cup game, the pressures are a little bit different.
Role of Hardik and Dube, especially with ball Rohit: Expect them to do what they are doing in the IPL. Unfortunately, Shivam (Dube) hasn't bowled in the IPL. He's a seasoned cricketer who bowls a lot of overs in red-ball cricket. So, he knows how to bowl. It's just that when he plays that T20 format, it's just about a little bit of skills coming into the picture. The bowlers with some kind of skillset have good chances of having success in this format. I am honestly we will be expecting if we need Shivam to bowl a few overs, he will be bowling few overs. Same with Hardik as well. He's been bowling regularly in the IPL as well, whenever it's been required, he's come and bowled. He has played all the games, so fitness-wise no issues. All-rounders will have to bat, bowl, field, take some catches. We have got 2 spinner all-rounders as well who are quality as well. So, we will be looking forward to have contributions from these 4 guys, not just these 4 guys but all of us.&nbsp;

Despite a hundred earlier on, Rohit has managed to score 315 runs in 10 innings so far at an average of 35. Moreover, he has scored just 54 runs in his last 4 innings.
On the other hand, Hardik has had a miserable tournament and has managed to score just 197 runs in as many outings. His average of 21.8 is also below par. He has not been impressive with the ball either.
With no sign of the Hitman and the new skipper not firing, no wonder why the Mumbai Indians have had a miserable IPL 2024.

Eager for a turnaround, Rohit is not thinking about retirement at all and instead he's focusing on the upcoming editions of these tournaments in 2025 and 2027, hoping to lead his team to victory.
Now 36, Rohit has a storied history with cricket's premier events, having been a part of the team that won the 2007 T20 World Cup. However, he places a greater significance on the traditional 50-over format and still hopes to win it. "I am playing well at the moment and I am thinking of continuing for a few more years. I really want to win that World Cup. The 50-over World Cup is the actual World Cup. We have grown up watching the 50-over World Cup. There is the World Test Championship final happening at Lord's in 2025. Hopefully, we will make it there," Rohit mentioned in a candid conversation on the 'Breakfast With Champions' YouTube chat show, which also featured British pop icon Ed Sheeran.
The memory of the recent World Cup final loss on home soil in Ahmedabad lingers for Rohit. Despite a strong campaign, India fell short in the final, a defeat that Rohit finds difficult to digest. Reflecting on the moments leading up to that pivotal match, he expressed, "When we won the semis, I thought, we were just one step away from it (victory). I thought, what's that one thing that can make us lose that final, and honestly, nothing came to my mind."
However, he concedes that it was simply a bad day for the Indian team while Australia excelled. "We'd ticked all the boxes, we were playing good cricket, confidence was there. But that was one bad day and the Aussies had a very good day. I don't think we played bad cricket in that final," Rohit observed, finding some solace in the fact that it wasn't a lack of skill or preparation but merely an off day that led to their downfall.
In contrast to the World Cup, India's recent success in Test cricket has provided Rohit some comfort. He highlighted India&rsquo;s impressive 4-1 Test series victory over England, emphasizing the challenges they faced. "You might enter the field with a plan, but when you see things moving differently, you have to change it," he explained. It was Sachin Tendulkar's 199th Test, so the stadium was packed, some 70000 people in the stadium. Probably it was (the best moment)," he reminisced fondly.

It is something like EPL first division where any team can beat any team," he shared, appreciating the strategic improvements and technological advancements that have elevated the league's standard.

The incident happened during Rajasthan's run-chase when Rohit was fielding in the slips. After meeting Rohit and Kishan, the fan ran away with his arms wide open and seemed to be celebrating. He was then grabbed by the security officials and escorted out.
Though nothing happened the incident highlighted a major lapse in security as such incidents have increased in the IPL lately.
Last week, a fan ran onto the field to meet Virat Kohli during RCB vs PBKS match at the M Chinnasamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
