Shoaib Malik denounces match-fixing claims in BPL, confirms commitment to Fortune Barishal

Former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik has categorically denied any involvement in match-fixing in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), addressing the swirling rumours about his alleged contract termination with Fortune Barishal. The conjecture began circulating on social media platforms, suggesting Malik's dismissal from the franchise due to purported match-fixing activities, particularly after he delivered three no-balls in the initial over of a match against Khulna Tigers on January 22.

Despite these accusations, Malik continued to represent the franchise in subsequent games until the completion of the BPL 2024's Dhaka phase. Through a statement on his 'X' account, Malik strongly dismissed the rumours as unfounded and urged the public to approach such allegations with skepticism and a demand for verification.

"I want to emphasise the importance of exercising caution when it comes to rumours, especially those circulating recently," Malik stated. He further stressed the damage that false information can inflict on individuals' reputations and the importance of grounding discussions in truth. "Falsehoods can harm reputations and create unnecessary confusion. Let's prioritise accuracy and rely on credible sources to ensure a clear understanding of the facts."

In addition to refuting the match-fixing allegations, Malik clarified his temporary exit from the league, attributing it to a pre-arranged media commitment in Dubai. He communicated his intentions to Fortune Barishal's team captain, Tamim Iqbal, ensuring his readiness to return and contribute to the team's success if necessary. "I had to leave Bangladesh for a pre-committed media engagement in Dubai. I extend my best wishes to Fortune Barishal for their upcoming matches, and if needed, I am available to support them if needs be," Malik confirmed.

Supporting Malik's stance, a video shared by the cricketer featured Fortune Barishal's owner Mizanur Rahman, who also refuted any claims of match-fixing associated with Malik.
