Ruturaj Gaikwad slams 1st ever ton by CSK captain; Dube smashes 27-ball 66 as hosts post 210 | IPL 2024

In a commanding display of batting prowess, Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad notched his second IPL century, leading his team to an impressive 210-run total against the Lucknow Super Giants at their home ground, Chepauk. This historic innings marked the first-ever century by a CSK captain, and the first at Chepauk since Brendon McCullum's memorable ton against Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2015.

Returning to his role as an opener, Gaikwad showcased his exceptional skills and temperament. Despite the early loss of his opening partner, Ajinkya Rahane, Gaikwad's composed and resilient innings anchored CSK's batting lineup. He demonstrated a masterclass in risk-free cricket, meticulously building his innings and steering his team towards a formidable score.

Throughout his innings, Gaikwad remained undeterred and focused, playing what can only be described as a chanceless knock. While other seasoned players like Daryl Mitchell and Ravindra Jadeja found it challenging to accelerate the scoring rate, Gaikwad took the responsibility upon himself, ensuring that CSK was set on course for a significant total.

As the innings progressed, Shivam Dube entered the fray and immediately made an impact, relieving some of the pressure on Gaikwad. However, Gaikwad’s determination did not wane. Approaching his century, he continued to search for boundary opportunities, eventually reaching the milestone with a splendid four over extra cover.

The partnership between Gaikwad and Dube proved devastating in the death overs as they took the Lucknow Super Giants' bowlers to task. While Gaikwad achieved his hundred off just 56 balls, Dube contributed significantly with a rapid 22-ball fifty, further enhancing CSK's position in the game. Dube eventually finished with a 27-ball 66 as CSK finished with a massive 210 on the board.
