IPL 2024, MI vs CSK: Rohit Sharma's fiery hundred in vain as Chennai win a thriller

IPL 2024, MI vs CSK: Rohit Sharma's fiery hundred in vain as Chennai win a thriller

It was the first time since 2012 that Rohit Sharma smashed a hundred in the IPL but his super effort went in vain as the Chennai Super Kings beat the Mumbai Indians by 20 runs in the second match of a super Sunday in IPL 2024.

Hardik Pandya's decision to bowl first was the right call at Wankhede as CSK didn't have the best of starts. They lost 2 wickets for 60 runs before Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shivam Dube counter-attacked with a 90-run partnership.

CSK skipper top-scored with 69 and Dube smashed an unbeaten 66 but the highlight of the innings was MS Dhoni's 4-ball-20, which powered the visitors to 206/4.

Mumbai came out all guns blazing as Rohit and Ishan Kishan stitched a 70-run opening stand in just 7 overs.

Then came Matheesha Pathirana and changed the game on its head with 2 wickets in his very first over.

Rohit didn't get much support from the other end but he continued to fight a lone battle and scored his 2nd IPL hundred. He remained unbeaten on 105 but Pathirana finished with 4 wickets to restrict MI to 186/6.

In the end, it was exactly those 20 runs by Dhoni which proved to be the difference between the two sides as Mumbai were handed their 4th defeat in 6 outings.

CSK on the other hand won their first match outside of Chennai this season and further consolidated their 3rd spot.
