Mayank Yadav Exclusive: IPL's newest sensation recounts the origins of his cricket story

Mayank Yadav, the 21-year-old pace sensation from New Delhi, has rapidly become the talk of Indian cricket, especially after showcasing an exceptional performance in IPL 2024 for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). His remarkable ability to deliver fast-paced bowling culminated in a momentous event during a match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where he hurled the cricket ball at an impressive speed of 156.7 KPH. This delivery not only set the record for the fastest ball in the tournament's 2024 edition but also ranked as the fourth fastest in the history of the IPL.

Selected by the LSG in the 2022 IPL auction, Yadav, then only 19, was acquired for INR 20 Lakhs—a testament to his burgeoning reputation as a formidable fast bowler. His journey to becoming a cricketing prodigy is both inspiring and reflective of his dedication to the sport.

In a candid interview with Vikram Chandra of Editorji, Yadav revealed the origins of his tryst with cricket, sharing insights into the early days that shaped his career. "I started playing cricket when I was 9 years old. I used to play at a park with my friends and then joined a local cricket academy in Delhi and played there for four years," Yadav recounted. This early exposure to cricket laid the foundation for his future in the sport, igniting a passion that would carry him to professional heights.

He went on to describe his transition to a more competitive environment, "At the age of 14, I joined Sonnet cricket club where my coach Tarak Sinha was very much impressed with me. I used to play with senior guys as players of my age found it difficult to face my deliveries. I always wanted to play in the senior team and didn't want to play in a particular age group." This determination to challenge himself against more experienced players highlighted Yadav's ambition and his readiness to push beyond the boundaries of age and experience.

Yadav's path took an unexpected turn with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, a period that presented challenges but also opportunities for growth and reflection. Despite these hurdles, his resilience and talent ultimately led him to the IPL, where he now stands as a beacon of fast bowling for aspiring cricketers across the nation.
