And once again all eyes will be on India, who will be looking to end their 47-year drought for the coveted World Cup title.

A total of 44 matches will be played across two venues, with 16 teams in the fray. The marquee event will start on January 13 with the final scheduled to take place on January 29.

Meanwhile, three-time champions Pakistan will miss the tournament after they failed to finish among the top four teams at the Asia Cup.

Hockey World Cup 2022 Venue

With Odisha hosting the marquee event for the second time running, Bhubneshwar and Rourkela will co-host the tournament.

Hockey World Cup 2022 format and Tie-breaker rules

  • 16 teams divided into 4 pools
  • Each team will play three pool matches
  • Pool toppers directly advance to quarterfinals
  • Remaining 4 teams in QFs to be decided after crossover matches between 2nd and 3rd placed teams

Points distribution: Group stage

  • For every win, team will earn 2 points.
  • For every draw, both teams will share a point each.
  • Tie-breaker rule to be used if teams finish level on points

Tie-breaker rule

  • Team with more wins will be ranked higher.
  • Goal difference to come into effect if teams are level on number of wins.
  • Team which scored more goals will be ranked higher if the goal difference is also same

With Manpreet Singh-led side ending the 41-year drought for an Olympics medal in Tokyo, India could improve on their quarterfinal finish at the 2018 World Cup.
