Simone Biles: Gymnastics champion to make a comeback in August in her first event since Tokyo Olympics

Gymnastics icon Simone Biles, a seven-time Olympic medallist and the 2016 Olympic champion, has announced her plans to make a comeback to competition at the U.S. Classic, an important event on USA Gymnastics' calendar. This will mark Biles' first appearance since the Tokyo Olympics.

Scheduled for August 5 outside Chicago, the U.S. Classic will feature Biles as part of the women's field. After an eventful stay in Japan in 2021, where Biles prioritized her mental health by withdrawing from multiple events, her return signifies a significant moment for both herself and the gymnastics world.

During the Tokyo Olympics, Biles made headlines when she chose to step back from certain competitions to focus on her well-being, shedding light on the importance of athletes' mental health. She supported her American teammates as they won the team silver medal but did not participate in the all-around, vault, and floor exercise finals due to experiencing what gymnasts refer to as "the twisties," a loss of spatial awareness while in the air.

Biles made a comeback for the balance beam final, clinching a bronze medal that tied Shannon Miller's record for the most Olympic medals won by an American female gymnast. While she hinted at the possibility of competing in the Paris 2024 Olympics, Biles opted for a substantial break before returning to the sport.

In the past two years, Biles has embarked on a whirlwind journey, headlining her post-Olympic tour in 2021 and getting married to NFL player Jonathan Owens, who now plays as a defensive back for the Green Bay Packers. Alongside her athletic achievements, Biles has emerged as a strong advocate for athletes prioritizing their mental well-being, sparking ongoing discussions about the topic.

Biles' decision to make her comeback at the U.S. Classic, a prestigious event leading up to the national championships in late August, reflects her determination to continue competing on her own terms. As she returns to the sport she has dominated for nearly a decade, fans eagerly anticipate witnessing Biles' unrivaled talent and resilience once again.
