Canada heatwave: Village that logged 50°C totally burnt by wildfire

A widlfire has burnt 90% of the village in Canada's British Columbia where mercury shot to 50 degrees earlier this week. Local offical said that little has escaped fires in the village in Lytton that is home to about 250 families, who have been evacuated.

Lytton mayor Jan Polderman told BBC that he "had been lucky to out alive", adding "there won't be much left of Lytton.

Officials said that flames spread through the village in just 15 minutes.

British Columbia, in western Canada, has recorded 486 deaths over five days compared with an average of 165 in normal times, BBC reported. Many of those who died had been living alone in unventilated homes, officials said.
