More than 120 killed after record rain floods Europe; Germany worst hit

At least 128 people in Europe, most of them in western Germany died after record rains swept away entire villages

The western Europian nations of Germany and Belgium are flooded following very heavy rainfall. Netherlands which shares its borders with both the countries has also been badly affected.

In Germany, police helicopters and hundreds of soldiers have been deployed to help stranded residents. Meanwhile, in Belgium cities are being evacuated as the Meuse river threatens to overflow.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel called the flooding a "catastrophe" and said she was "grieving those who have lost their lives".

Experts say that climate change is expected to increase the frequency of extreme weather events.
