End of an era: Rahul Bajaj steps down as chairman of Bajaj Auto after 50 years

Addressing shareholders for the final time, Rahul Bajaj, Chairman of Bajaj Auto, warned that any more Covid-induced lockdowns may not necessarily control the spread of the virus but will surely impact businesses, hit employment, and cripple the economy.

One of the longest-serving chairmen in corporate India, Rahul Bajaj stepped down from the role after almost 50 years.

From launching Chetak and Super to the ever famous 'Hamara Bajaj' campaign Rahul Bajaj is revered as an astute businessman. He created immense value for shareholders when in 2008 he ensured a smooth transfer of his power to his sons as he split the company into three units — Bajaj Auto, finance company Bajaj Finserv and a holding company. While Rajiv Bajaj manages the auto business, the finance company is under younger brother Sanjiv.

In 2019 Rahul Bajaj grabbed headlines as he questioned the govt, stating that corporates were afraid of the Modi govt. Even at 82 Rahul Bajaj will be a tough act to follow for his cousin Niraj Bajaj who takes over as chairman of Bajaj Auto from May 1.
