Greece wildfires: ‘nightmarish summer’, says PM as thousands evacuated

Apocalyptic scenery continue to emerge from Greece where massive wildfires continue to ravage the nation as the country faces its worst heat wave in decades.

According to the European Forest Fie Information System, more than 56,000 hectares of land has been incinerated.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has described the situation as a ‘nightmarish summer’ and said that the government’s priority is to save human lives.

Thousands have been evacuated and more are being rescued - in Evia, Greece’s second largest island. A dozen fires broke out in the past 24 hours and more than 2,000 people have been evacuated via ferry.

Greece has deployed over 1,000 fire fighters to bring the inferno under control and has appealed for more help from the European Union.

Several nations have offered support. Fire fighters and aircrafts have arrived from France, Ukraine, Cyprus, Croatia, Sweden, Romania and Switzerland.
