The Indian women's hockey team qualified for the quarterfinal for the first time in 40 years after Great Britain beat Ireland 2-0 in the last Pool A group match, securing the 4th spot.

India’s hopes of making the quarter-final rested on the outcome of the last Pool A group match between Great Britain and Ireland.

If Rampal and Navneet Kaur were the heroes of the win against Ireland, it was Vandana Katariya on Saturday, who became the first Indian woman to score a hat-trick at the Olympics. Katariya scored in the 4th, 17th and 49th with Neha Goyal getting one in the 32nd.
