Priyansh (103 off 42) powered Punjab Kings to 219 for six, the highest total at the venue, after the hosts lost half their side inside the first eight overs.
CSK batters have not been good enough thus far in the season but the likes of Devon Conway (69 off 49 retired out), Rachin Ravindra (36 off 23) and Shivam Dube (42 off 27) were able to take the game deep on this occasion. However, CSK fell short and ended at 201 for five.
It was CSK's fourth loss in five games while Punjab Kings recorded their third win in four matches.
The equation for CSK came down to 75 runs off the last 30 balls. Much to the delight of fans present at the venue, Dhoni (27 off 12) came to bat at number five after Dube's fall in the 16th over.
With Dube going ballistic in the middle overs, Punjab Kings had to wait till the 17th over to get their main spinner Yuzvendra Chahal into operation.
It was Lockie Ferguson's turn to bowl the 18th over and that was when Dhoni provided a glimmer of hope for CSK with two sixes off as many balls. However, 43 off the last 12 balls ended up being too much for the away team.
Punjab Kings were poor in the field, dropping as many as four catches but were still able to get over the line.
The night belonged to Priyansh, the 24-year-old from Delhi who rose to prominence with six sixes in an over in a local league last year.
He flaunted his special six-hitting skills on the national stage to lift Punjab Kings to an above par total. His knock included seven boundaries and nine hits over the fence.
The commendable recovery was also made possible by Shashank Singh (52 not out off 36 balls) who made sure Punjab Kings cashed in on the platform laid by Arya. Number eight Marco Jansen (34 not out off 19) also played his part to perfection.
Head coach Ricky Ponting had spoken highly of Priyansh at the start of the season and on Tuesday, the left-hander repaid the immense faith which the Australian legend showed on him.
After two successive failures, Priyansh was under pressure but the way he started his innings, slaying pacer Khaleel Ahmed for six over point, set the tone for his memorable effort.
Priyansh loves smashing sixes down the ground but after picking Ponting's brains, he seems to have upped his game square of the wicket. With the ease he deposited Matheesha Pathirana's short balls in the 13th over was a testament to that.
After three straight sixes off the Sri Lanka pacer, the next one was a four towards third man off a mis-hit that took him to three figures.
What also stood out in Priyansh's stellar knock was the manner in which he played veteran spinner R Ashwin. He collected three sixes off Ashwin though one of them should have been a catch at the boundary.
CSK's leading wicket taker Noor Ahmed was introduced in the 11th over and Shahank welcomed him into the attack with a massive six over wide long-on.
While Arya stole the show, Shashank struck the ball crisply building on his breakaway last season.
An ordinary bowling effort from CSK allowed Punjab Kings to come back in the game and eventually gain the upperhand.

Such was the domination that LSG reached 95 without loss at the halfway stage and then added 143 in the last 10 overs with Pooran leading the carnage.
It was a clinical batting performance from LSG's top-three. Markram's early impetus, Marsh's consistency, and Pooran&rsquo;s finishing fireworks left KKR completely outclassed on their preferred dry and sticky wicket.
Markram was the early aggressor, plundering Spencer Johnson for 18 runs in his second over. He lofted two fours and a six off successive deliveries.

The fortunes swung when Hardik clobbered two sixes and as many fours off his first four balls off Krunal Pandya in the 14th over.
Before Hardik cut loose, Tilak had raced to 30 off 15 balls to keep MI's faint hopes alive, which kept improving with every hit that the batters unleashed.
The asking rate had zoomed past 15 an over but MI kept clearing the ropes to remain in the hunt. But Tilak fell in the 18th over from Bhuvneshwar Kumar (1/48) and Hardik in the penultimate over from Josh Hazlewood (2/37).

The two wickets gave SRH a glimmer of hope but skipper Shubman Gill and Washington Sundar joined forces to stitch a third-wicket partnership of 90 runs to pave the way for their team's win.
Helping the GT duo to get their innings up and running after the early wobble was a horrendous sixth over from pacer Simarjeet Singh, who conceded 20 runs to ease the pressure on the visitors.
Simarjeet was guilty of repeatedly bowling short and Washington took full advantage of it by pulling and hooking him for two sixes over fine leg after collecting two fours.
Gill was all class reaching his half-century in 36 balls with the help of some delightful shots but Washington got out one short of what would have been a well-deserved fifty.
A flurry of boundaries from Sherfane Rutherford (35 not out off 16 balls) then helped GT finish the game with plenty to spare.
Earlier, Siraj dismissed struggling openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma cheaply before coming back to add two more wickets to his tally.
Head (8) had a fortuitous start as his edge off Siraj went past the stumps for a boundary.

But just when SRH looked like laying the foundation for a respectable score, left-arm spinner Sai Kishore picked up the prized wicket of Klaasen whose leg stump was disturbed as he rocked back to employ the pull shot.
Reddy too perished while trying to smash Sai Kishore out of the park, leaving SRH at 105 for five in the beginning of the 16th over.

The report added that Stone, who has 17 Test wickets so far, will target an August return to the England side.
"Further scans have revealed the requirement of surgery, which will take place later this week, and will sideline the 31-year-old for a subsequent 14 weeks. He will now begin rehabilitation, working closely with the medical teams at both the ECB and Nottinghamshire..
Stone is the second pacer on the injury list after fellow quick, Mark Wood was was ruled out earlier this year.

"Ruturaj Gaikwad ruled out of IPL with fracture on elbow. MS Dhoni to take over as captain," Fleming told mediapersons on Thursday.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is planning to have a conference with players, coaches, national selectors and mentors during or after the Pakistan Super League (PSL) to "resolve some internal issues" in the national team.
A source said on Thursday that PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi was not happy with the way matters related to the team had been handled so far by all the stakeholders.
"There has been a lack of proper communication between the team captains, coaches and selectors in recent months and this has led to senior players including ODI and Test captains, Mohammad Rizwan, Shan Masood not being happy at decisions being taken by over-riding their views in selection and other team matters," the source said.
He said Rizwan had conveyed a message to the chairman to meet with the players and discuss the issues.
Apparently Rizwan was overruled by the interim head coach, Aaqib Javed, and selectors on a few occasions in selection and team strategy matters in recent times.
"The PCB chairman will probably call a meeting with senior players, selectors, coaches, concerned board officials and the mentors to openly discuss the issues in the team," the source added.
A similar exercise was held last September by the PCB in which some senior players openly questioned the performance of some board officials and expressed their concerns over NOC policy for foreign leagues.
The PCB also has to take a call on the coaching staff for the national team during or after the PSL ends next month before Pakistan begins its new international home season with a series against Bangladesh at home.
The PCB has to decide whether to make Aaqib the permanent head coach in all formats or appoint new coaches.

The result was a 39-ball exhilarating century against Chennai Super Kings which catapulted the Delhi man into instant stardom, which is a common phenomenon for all young performers.
"Ricky sir gave me confidence by saying that anyone can be out first ball. He told me hit it out of the park if you get the same ball," he said in a selection media interaction.
Priyansh did smash the first ball out of the park in the following game though line of that delivery was different from CSK pacer Khaleel Ahmed.
"Ricky sir always keeps telling me to improve my pull shot. Have not worked with him on the technical front, we talk only about mindset," said the soft-spoken batter who rose to prominence with his six sixes off as many balls in a local Delhi league last year.
In his debut season at Punjab Kings, both as captain and player, Iyer has led with confidence which has rubbed off on greenhorns like Priyansh.
The chat with him too was equally uplifting following the Archer dismissal.
"In the nets ahead of the CSK game, Shreyas bhai just told me go with my first thought after seeing the ball. Before the season too, he had told me that I would be playing all 14 games.
"Both Shreyas and Ricky sir never spoke anything negative after the first ball dismissal. That is bound to boost your confidence," said Priyansh.
Priyansh has matured to become a 'see the ball, hit the ball batter' but by his own admission he was not that bold in his early days when he faced rejection in IPL trials and even in the senior Delhi team.
Consistency is another word he stresses on during the interaction.
"I made debut for senior Delhi team in in 2021 but was out after two games. So I wanted to make consistent runs. Till last year too, I was not consistent. But I was able to gain that consistency in DPL and state team this season.
"'Consistency is the key' is something that goes in my mind all the time," said Priyansh.
Gambhir's Priceless Gift: A brand new kit bag ============================ Priyansh has been training with Delhi based coach Sanjay Bhardwaj since the age of 10. Bhardwaj has also produced players like current India head coach Gautam Gambhir, someone Priyansh would try to emulate during net sessions.
"Sanjay sir has played a huge role in my life. We have been talking on a daily basis even now. Before the IPL, he told me specifically to work on my cut and pull as I would have to play those shots of hard length and not half-trackers.
"Talking about Gautam sir, growing up we did not think about the game like we do now. Sanjay sir used to tell us to watch him bat. First time I spoke to him was in a Ranji camp. Gautam sir gave me a brand new kit bag. I still remember that vividly." Regrets not meeting Dhoni post on-field heroics ============================= MS Dhoni, going about his business as usual behind the stumps, can be a daunting for a young batter like Priyansh. Having got to share the field alongside the World Cup winning captain, Priyansh feels like a very luck man.
"I feel very lucky to play against Dhoni sir as very few get that opportunity. There was pressure when he was behind the wickets and also there were legendary bowlers on the field like Ashwin. I wanted to talk Dhoni sir but he had left the ground by that time." How was it tonking the likes of Ashwin on either side of the wicket? "I felt he would try to cramp me and I went for the sweep shot at first. Attacking batsmen out hote hue ganda hee lagta hain (Any attacking batter generally looks ugly during dismissals). Whoever it might be. I dont think about these things, just worry about execution my shots," he added.
With luck on his side on Tuesday night, Priyansh got his execution spot on.

The IOC Executive Board approved the complete event programme on April 9, announcing that the 2028 Olympics will feature 351 medal events&mdash;22 more than in Paris 2024. While the core athlete quota remains at 10,500, an additional 698 athletes will be accommodated across the newly added sports.
The qualification process for cricket is still under discussion, particularly given the global reach of the T20 format, which is currently played by nearly 100 countries. This widespread popularity sets the stage for an inclusive and competitive qualification system. As the host nation, the United States is expected to receive a direct entry into the tournament.
Cricket&rsquo;s return to a multi-sport platform follows a growing trend of its reintroduction at global events. The bowlers then kept chipping away, striking at regular intervals to keep Rajasthan on the back foot despite fighting knocks from Shimron Hetmyer (52) and skipper Sanju Samson (41).
The visitors were eventually bowled out for 159 in 19.1 overs.
Sudharsan was in sublime touch, effortlessly finding gaps and punishing anything loose. His fluent knock, laced with eight boundaries and three sixes, formed the bedrock of GT&rsquo;s imposing total.
Defending 217, pacers Mohammed Siraj (1/30) and Arshad Khan (1/19) struck early to give GT the perfect start.
Arshad drew first blood, removing the dangerous Yashasvi Jaiswal (6) who slashed at a wide one and picked out Rashid Khan at deep third.
In the very next over, Nitish Rana (1) attempted an upper-cut off Siraj but met the same fate, guiding it straight to the fielder at deep third man.
But Samson and Riyan Parag (26) launched a fiery counterattack. Parag smoked three no-look sixes, while Samson dispatched anything loose to the boundary with casual ease, taking RR to 57/2 in the powerplay.
The momentum swung again as Impact Sub Kulwant Khejroliya (1/29) had Parag caught by Buttler, before Rashid Khan removed Dhruv Jurel (5) to leave Rajasthan tottering at 68/4.
Samson and Hetmyer added 48 runs to keep hopes alive, but Prasidh Krishna (3/24) dealt the killer blow.
He first dismissed Samson as the wicketkeeper tried to steer one behind square but only managed to skew it high towards Sai Kishore, who held on calmly at the edge of the circle.
Krishna then returned to snare Hetmyer.
Earlier, after leaking plenty of runs initially in the IPL, Jofra Archer (1/30) is well and truly back to his best.
With the new ball in hand, he cranked it up to 152.3 kph in his first over, then returned in his second to clean up Shubman Gill (2) with a steaming 147.7 kph inswinger that beat the inside edge and crashed into Gill's off stump.
Archer then greeted Buttler with a sharp bouncer, but the former England captain responded a couple of balls later with a crisp four to the deep-cover boundary.
With Sudharsan taking charge, Buttler joined the party with back-to-back boundaries off Fazalhaq Farooqi (0/38) in the seventh over.
In the next over, he sliced Maheesh Theekshana (2/54) through the off side for a four, before lofting him straight down the ground for another boundary.
But Theekshana had the last laugh, trapping Buttler leg-before, ending an 80-run partnership.
Rajasthan skipper Sanju Samson immediately turned back to Archer in a bid to stem the flow of runs, and the Barbados-born pacer repaid the faith with a tight over that went for just six.
But Shahrukh exploded into action in the very next over, slamming consecutive boundaries before muscling one over deep extra cover to inject some much needed momentum into the GT innings.
The boundaries kept coming as Shahrukh went after Theekshana in the 14th over that yielded 16 runs.
Royals responded by striking twice in quick succession, removing Shahrukh and Sherfane Rutherford (7) to pull things back.
Sudharsan was handed a life on 81 but couldn&rsquo;t make much of the reprieve, as Tushar Deshpande induced a thin edge to send him back in the dugout.
