The first few years of a baby’s life are crucial to the development of their immune systems. In particular, the first 5 years of life are pivotal in shaping one’s immunity and this is why it is all the more important to provide the right kind of nutrition from a young age.

While it is important to introduce new flavours and textures to your little one’s tongue, there are some seemingly simple food groups that could prove to be dangerous for young children.

      Salt

First up on our list is salt! Babies don’t need to consume much salt and their kidneys are just not ready for it. The NHS UK advises that if you’re feeding your baby the same food that you eat then avoid bacon, crackers, chips and packaged or ready to eat meals.

      Sugar

Sugar is another food group that little ones don't really need. So, avoid sugary snacks, drinks and treats. Studies show that eating super sweet foods throughout childhood, especially before the age of two, can lead to preventable diseases, such as heart disease, obesity and high blood pressure later on in life.

      Honey

You should also avoid giving any form of honey to the baby until the age of one. Occasionally, honey may contain certain bacteria that can secrete toxins into the baby’s intestines and cause infant botulism.

      Citrus fruits

Citrus fruits are another food group that is best avoided. These tangy fruits and juices are loaded with vitamin C and are acidic in nature. These may cause acid reflux and stomach troubles in babies younger than two months.

      Nuts and Seeds

When it comes to nuts and seeds, everyone agrees that they can be a choking hazard and should be strictly avoided until the age of five. But nut butters are where things get interesting. Studies have shown that introducing a tiny amount of peanut butter in your kid’s diet may help prevent peanut allergies.

While the science is clear on most of these facts, it is best to consult your doctor before making sudden changes in your baby’s diet.
