Apple recently released its fourth annual fraud prevention analysis, revealing details about their efforts to secure its App Store. From 2020 to 2023, Apple claims to have prevented over $7 billion in potentially fraudulent transactions, including more than $1.8 billion in 2023 alone.
Apple's Fraud Prevention Measures
According to the report, Apple has expanded its anti-fraud initiatives to combat evolving digital threats. The company’s efforts include monitoring and investigating fraudulent activity daily and utilizing advanced tools to eliminate bad actors. These measures have resulted in the blocking of more than 14 million stolen credit cards and over 3.3 million accounts from transacting again during the four-year period.
Apple's App Review Process
Apple’s App Review team, consisting of over 500 experts, evaluates every app submission to ensure compliance with the App Store's standards for privacy violations, security, and content. In 2023, the team reviewed nearly 6.9 million app submissions, helping more than 192,000 developers publish their first app. However, over 1.7 million app submissions were rejected for failing to meet these standards, including violations for privacy and fraudulent activity.
Fraudulent Transactions and Account Terminations by Apple
In 2023 alone, Apple prevented more than 3.5 million stolen credit cards from being used for fraudulent purchases. The company also banned over 1.1 million accounts from transacting again. Measures Against Illegitimate Apps and Pirate Storefronts by Apple
In 2023, Apple detected and blocked more than 47,000 illegitimate apps on pirate storefronts. The company also stopped nearly 3.8 million attempts to install or launch apps distributed illicitly through the Developer Enterprise Program. These measures are designed to protect users from apps that may be modified or used to disguise malicious software.

Apple processed over 1.1 billion ratings and reviews in 2023. The company removed nearly 152 million fraudulent ratings and reviews from the App Store, ensuring that users have access to trustworthy feedback about the apps they use.
The App Review team identified and removed apps engaging in bait-and-switch tactics, rejecting or removing 40,000 such apps in 2023. More than 248,000 app submissions were rejected for violating Apple’s policies against spam, copying other apps, or misleading users. Additionally, over 38,000 apps were rejected for containing hidden features, and over 375,000 apps were rejected for privacy violations.
