WhatsApp launches passkey support on iOS: How to enable it

The introduction of passkeys will make WhatsApp for iOS more secure. It offers users a safer and convenient way to log in to their accounts.

WhatsApp launches passkey support on iOS: How to enable it

WhatsApp is rolling out a new security feature for iOS users: passkey support.

This feature, first announced in beta testing earlier this year, allows users to log in to their WhatsApp accounts using Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode, replacing traditional password-based authentication.

Enhanced security

Passkeys utilise public key cryptography, a more secure alternative to traditional login methods.

This technology generates two sets of keys: one stored on the platform's cloud and the other kept locally on the user's device, likely within Apple's Keychain system for iOS users.

Authentication occurs only when both keys match, making it significantly more resistant to phishing attacks and other online threats.

How to enable passkey on WhatsApp for iOS

To activate passkey on your iPhone:

  1. Update WhatsApp to its latest version.
  2. Go to the Settings tab in the app.
  3. Select Accounts.
  4. Choose Passkeys (fourth item from the top).
  5. Tap Create Passkey at the bottom of the screen.
  6. Use Face ID or Touch ID to authenticate and tap Continue.

Once these steps are completed, your passkey will be set up, adding an extra layer of security to your WhatsApp account on your iOS device.

While WhatsApp has confirmed the availability of passkeys for iOS users, the specific iOS versions supporting this feature remain unclear. A previous report suggests compatibility with iOS 17 and later.

It's worth noting that Android users have already had access to a similar passwordless login feature for some time.
