Anish Awadhiya and Ashwini Kostha were killed in an accident in the early hours of May 19 when an overspeeding Porsche allegedly driven by a drunk 17-year-old boy hit their motorcycle.
Speeding cars have too often been involved in accidents that turned fatal for those involved, including the occupants of the vehicles.
Two days before the accident in Pune, a speeding BMW car rammed into an e-rickshaw in Noida, leaving two dead, including a nurse, and three injured at 6 am on May 16.
The Uttar Pradesh city saw another fatal accident on May 26 morning as an Audi car hit a 64-year-old man, killing him on the spot, before speeding away.
The victim, Janak Dev Shah, a resident of Gijhor village in Sector-53, was crossing the road to buy milk.
Uttar Pradesh's Gautam Buddh Nagar district, comprising Noida and Greater Noida, witnessed 1,176 road crashes last year that resulted in the deaths of 470 people and injuries to 858.
The district had recorded 437 such deaths and injuries to 856 people in 2022, according to official data.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in its report Road Accidents in India 2022 stated that 4.61 lakh road accidents were reported across the country in 2022, killing 1.68 lakh people and injuring 4.43 lakh.
Among various traffic rule violations, overspeeding contributed to 1.19 lakh of the total 1.68 lakh deaths.
In August last year, two people died in an accident in Haryana's Nuh after a Rolls Royce Phantom collided with a petrol tanker on the Delhi-Mumbai expressway.
Even though it was the truck that was driving on the wrong side, the limousine was reportedly speeding at nearly 230 kmph. The two occupants of the truck died on impact while those in the car escaped with injuries.
Talking about the increasing number of road accidents involving luxury cars, road safety advocate and founder of NGO SaveLIFE Foundation Piyush Tewari said that the problem arises from the flawed licensing system in the country.
"Currently, if you have an LMV licence, you can drive anything from an 800cc car to a high-powered supercar. The licensing system should be upgraded to a graduated licensing system under which a person is given a licence based on their competency to drive a certain vehicle," Tewari said.
One of the most-reported car accidents killed former Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry and his friend Jehangir Pandole in November 2022.
The duo were travelling in a Mercedes-Benz SUV, driven by Anahita Pandole with her husband in the passenger seat. According to reports, the car was speeding at over 100 kmph and crashed into a road divider.
It was later determined that the two passengers in the back seat died because they were not wearing seat belts.
In October 2022, a BMW, cruising at a speed of more than 230 kmph on the Purvanchal Expressway became a mangled heap of metal after colliding with a truck. The car's four occupants died on the spot.
The luxury car was being driven by a 35-year-old professor of a private college in Rohtas in Bihar. His friends Deepak Kumar, an engineer, Akhilesh Singh, a realtor, and Mukesh, a businessman, were live-streaming on Facebook when the accident happened.
In the live-stream it was also seen that one of them was encouraging the driver to speed up further.
In another tragic accident in August 2021 in Bengaluru, seven people were killed after their Audi Q3 car driven by DMK MLA Y Prakash's son Karunasagar Prakash rammed into a divider.
The police concluded that the accident occurred because of negligent driving by Prakash who was speeding at 100 kmph.
Motor vehicle accidents have not spared pedestrians either. According to the Road Accidents in India 2022 report, 10,160 pedestrians died in 20,513 accidents on national highways.
In an accident in February 2020, an overspeeding Mercedes Benz car on a national highway near Hosapete in Karnataka hit an 18-year-old pedestrian at a tea stall who died on impact and was dragged for several metres. The accident also killed the front-seat passenger.
Tewari noted that to make roads safer, one of the foremost infrastructural changes involves creating pedestrian-friendly structures.
"In India, roads are not pedestrian-friendly. We need to make some infrastructural changes to the existing road network to make them safe for pedestrians, especially along highways, intersections and the city sections from where a highway passes,&rdquo; he added.

A cab driver and two more people sustained serious injuries after a speeding luxury car hit their vehicle here, police said on Sunday.
The incident took place early morning when a speeding Jaguar hit the cab and two other vehicles before coming to a halt near the Dhaula Kuan area of southwest Delhi, the police said.
"A PCR call was received at about 4.55 am regarding the accident of three vehicles and three injured individuals. A team, which was sent to the spot, found that the injured had been shifted to some unknown hospitals," Deputy Commissioner of Police (southwest) Rohit Meena said.
Later, at 8.32 am, the police received information from AIIMS Hospital regarding the cab driver, identified as Harjeet Singh, and two other people, who were travelling in the same cab, DCP Meena said.
"We have identified the owner of the Jaguar car, who fled the scene after the accident. Teams have been sent to nab the accused," he said.
DCP Meena said investigations are underway and the police are trying to find out if more people were injured in the accident.

The injured have been admitted to hospitals in Rewari and Gurugram, police said.

Banerjee was in Purba Bardhaman, around 102 km from Kolkata, to chair an administrative review meeting.
She had to take the car after her chopper could not take off due to bad weather. Doctors will reportedly attend to her in Kolkata.
The Congress party, which faced a setback after Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress decided to fight elections alone in Bengal, has wished her a "speedy recovery".
"We have just heard of the injury suffered by Mamata Banerjee-ji in a car accident. We wish her a full and speedy recovery," senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh posted on X.
He further said that the Rahul Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra will enter West Bengal tomorrow.
"The Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra is looking forward to entering West Bengal tomorrow late morning. January 26 and 27th being break days, the Yatra will resume on the 28th," he added.

Coast Guard spokesperson Yoshinori Yanagishima confirmed the collision between the passenger plane and its flight MA-722, a Bombardier Dash-8.

A vehicle speeding toward a US-Canada bridge from the American side crashed and exploded at a checkpoint in Niagara Falls on Wednesday, killing two people and prompting the closing of multiple border crossings for hours. Authorities weren't sure what spurred the wreck but said there were no signs it was a terror attack.
Much remained unclear about the incident at the Rainbow Bridge, which stirred concerns on both sides of the border as the US headed into the Thanksgiving holiday. Both US President Joe Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau were briefed soon afterwards and Trudeau excused himself from Question Period in the House of Commons to get further information, saying officials were "taking this extraordinarily seriously".
A few hours later, New York Governor Kathy Hochul and Western New York's US attorney, Trini Ross, both sought to ease fears, while cautioning that the investigation was in the early stages.
"Based on what we know at this moment," Hochul said at a news conference, "there is no sign of terrorist activity in this crash." At a separate news conference with Ross nearby in Buffalo, Erie Country Sheriff John Garcia said, "We can go on with our lives." Security camera video released by US Customs and Border Protection showed the car racing through an intersection, hitting a low median and vaulting into the air in a US Customs and Border Protection area just east of the main vehicle checkpoint. The car flew for yards (metres), twisting, and then crashed out of the camera's view.
Rickie Wilson, a Niagara Falls tour guide, was by his parked car nearby and turned around when he saw something in the air.
"I first thought it was an airplane. It looked like slow motion," he said. "I said, 'My God, it's a car. It's a vehicle, and it's flying through the air'." The identities of those in the car weren't released. Hochul said it wasn't clear whether the driver -- a western New York resident -- was intentionally heading for the bridge, which crosses the Niagara River.
Matthew Miraglia, the FBI special agent in charge in Buffalo, said investigators so far had found no "derogatory" information on the driver.
"We're scanning his social media. There's nothing there," Miraglia said.
Aaron Ferguson, a spokesperson for the city of Niagara Falls, New York, said the vehicle was travelling at high speed from that city.
Hochul said the car ended up "basically incinerated", with nothing left but the engine, and debris was scattered across a dozen checkpoint booths.
"It's going to take a lot of time for federal law enforcement partners &hellip; to be able to piece together the real story," she said.
Photos and video taken by bystanders and posted on social media showed thick smoke, flames on the pavement and a singed security booth. A Customs and Border Protection worker in a checkpoint booth was treated at a hospital for minor injuries and released, Hochul said.
From inside Niagara Falls State Park, Melissa Raffalow said she saw "a huge plume of black smoke" rise up over the border crossing, roughly 50 yards (45 metres) away from the popular tourist destination. Raffalow told AP in a message that police arrived soon after, urging visitors to disperse as they began cordoning off the street.
Raghu Bhattarai said by phone that he was inside his restaurant, the Niagara Tandoori Hut, near the bridge when he heard a sound he described as a "boom". A few minutes later, he saw black smoke rising.
The Rainbow Bridge and three others between western New York and Ontario were quickly closed as a precaution, though the other three later reopened. The Buffalo-Niagara International Airport began security checks on all cars and told passengers to expect additional screenings.
The safety measures tied up traffic at the airport and elsewhere on one of the busiest US travel days of the year, ahead of the American Thanksgiving holiday.
Sanchit Chatha, his wife Reyshu and their 13-year-old daughter, Trisha, had stopped in Niagara Falls for lunch en route home to Toronto from Buffalo when they started getting news notifications about the explosion. Worried friends called, knowing the family was in the area.
Trisha was concerned at seeing the bridges to Canada shut down, her mother said.
"She has a math test tomorrow," the mother explained as the family waited to find out when the crossings would open.
In Toronto, about 100 miles (about 160 kilometres) away, police said they were increasing patrols as a precaution. New York City police were monitoring the news from Buffalo but already had boosted security at various spots because of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday.
About 6,000 vehicles cross the Rainbow Bridge each day, according to the U.S. Federal Highway Administration's National Bridge Inventory. About 5 per cent is truck traffic, according to the federal data.

At least 36 people died after a bus fell into a gorge in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda.

At least 36 people were killed and 19 injured when a bus carrying passengers skidded off the road and rolled down into a 300-foot gorge in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district on Wednesday, officials said.
The bus bearing registration number JK02CN-6555 was reportedly carrying around 40 passengers, the officials said, adding that it skidded off the road near Trungal-Assar on the Batote-Kishtwar national highway and fell 300 feet downhill.
A rescue operation has been launched and some bodies have been retrieved, they said.
"Saddened to share the update from DC #Doda Sh Harvinder Singh from the spot of the accident. Unfortunately, 36 persons have died and 19 injured, out of whom 6 injured are serious. The injured are being shifted to GMC Doda and GMC #Jammu as per requirement. All possible help being provided. Sincere condolences to the bereaved families," Union minister Jitendra Singh, who is a member of Parliament from Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag, said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed grief over the incident.
"The bus accident in Doda, Jammu and Kashmir is distressing. My condolences to the families who have lost their near and dear ones. I pray that the injured recover at the earliest," Modi said on X.
He announced that an ex-gratia amount of Rs 2 lakh each would be given to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each would be given to the injured from the from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF).
"Deeply anguished to learn about the loss of precious lives due to a tragic bus accident at Doda, Jammu and Kashmir. The local administration is conducting the rescue operation in the gorge where the bus had the accident. My heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured," Shah said on X.
"Extremely pained by the loss of lives in a tragic bus accident in Assar, Doda. My heartfelt condolences to bereaved families and wishing for a speedy recovery of those injured in the accident. Directed Div Com and Dist Admin to provide all necessary assistance to affected persons," Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said on the microblogging website.
Due to the fall from a considerable height, the bus was badly damaged, sources said.
Police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel, besides locals, are involved in the rescue operation, they said, adding that some of the injured passengers have been shifted to hospitals.

Three people sustained injuries after a speeding SUV rammed into two bike-borne riders near the Kalena Agrahara locality of south Bangalore, police said on Monday.
Police further informed that the three injured were identified as Kiran, Jasmitha and Basanth.
According to the Hulimavu Traffic Police, "The incident took place near the Kalena Agrahara residential locality after the car driver identified as Abhishek Agarwal lost control of the vehicle and rammed into the two bike-borne riders in the south of Bangalore. The incident was caught on the dash cam of the car."
"Kiran who was on a bike jumped and fell down after the accident. Jasmitha and Basanth Kumar who were on the other bike were also injured after the car rammed into them."
The police have registered a case against the car driver at the Hulimavu Traffic Police Station.

Two passengers died on Saturday following a sudden jolt after a Delhi-bound train stopped as an overhead electric wire snapped in Jharkhand's Koderma district, East Central Railway officials said.
The accident occurred near Parsabad between Gomoh and Koderma railway stations at 12.05 pm as the driver of Puri-New Delhi Purushottam Express applied the emergency brake to stop the train after the overhead electric wire fell on it, they said.
"As electric supply stopped all of a sudden, emergency brake was applied to stop the train, and two persons died due to jerk," Senior Divisional Commerce Manager of Dhanbad Railway Division Ameresh Kumar said.
The train was running at a speed of 130 kmph when the accident occurred.
Train movement on the grand chord line under the Dhanbad Railway Division of ECR resumed after over four hours of halt following the accident in the Koderma-Gomoh section, he said.
The Purushottam Express was brought to Gomoh by a diesel engine from the accident spot and sent to Delhi by an electric engine, he said.
After getting information, Dhanbad Railway Division Manager KK Sinha along with senior officials reached the spot.

Three persons, including two women, were killed and six others injured after a speeding Toyota Innova hit multiple vehicles on the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, a police official said on Friday.
Two of the injured are in serious condition, the official said.
Krishnakant Upadhyay, deputy commissioner of police (DCP) - Zone 9, said the Innova first hit a Mercedes Benz car about 100 metres before the toll booth, which is at the Bandra end of the sea link, on the north-bound lane.
&ldquo;The driver of the Innova tried to escape from the spot and sped away. As the vehicle reached the toll booth, it rammed into many cars, leaving nine people injured. Later, three of them were declared dead,&rdquo; the DCP said.
Six of the injured persons, including the driver of the Innova, are being treated. Two of them are in serious condition, he said.
Barring the Innova, five more vehicles were involved in the accident on the sea link, he said.
Seven people, including the driver, were travelling on the Innova at the time of the accident, the official said.
A case is being registered against the driver of the Innova car on the basis of preliminary information and further investigations are underway, he added.

A foot over-bridge partially collapsed in East Delhi's Laxmi Nagar area after being hit by a crane being transported on a carriage truck, police said on Monday. No one was injured in the incident.
The mishap occurred late Sunday night when the truck was transporting the crane from the Akshardham Temple area to Burari, they said.
A police officer said when the truck reached Pusta Road near Lalita Park, a part of the crane hit the foot over-bridge, causing it to collapse partially.
"The truck driver, identified as Neeraj Kumar (28), could not assess the height of the foot over-bridge. Thankfully, neither was anyone on the bridge nor below it," he said.
The truck dragged the collapsed portion of the over-bridge on for a few metres before coming to a halt, the officer added.
Police said a case under sections of negligence and rash driving was registered against the truck driver, who was held at the spot.&nbsp;

In the accident, one woman died and four people were seriously injured. The video of the incident is now going viral on the internet in which people were seen walking on a footpath when a speeding car, a Hyundai Eon, driven by Kamalesh Baldev came in and hit the pedestrians.
All of this took place in six seconds and resulted in the death of one person. The other four who were severely injured in the accident are currently admitted to a hospital.&nbsp;
Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code against Kamalesh Baldev.&nbsp;
