The All India Football Federation (AIFF) on Tuesday suspended its executive committee member Deepak Sharma until further notice for his alleged physical assault of two women players in Goa, two days after it stopped short of doing the same.
Two footballers of Himachal Pradesh-based Khad FC, taking part in the Indian Women's Football (IWL) League second division, had alleged that Sharma, the owner of the club, had barged into their room and physically assaulted them on the night of March 28.
On Saturday, the AIFF asked Sharma to refrain from football-related activities till the conclusion of a probe by a panel into his alleged incident. Sharma was arrested by Goa police after the host state association lodged a complaint and later released on bail.
"The AIFF Executive Committee has decided to suspend Mr. Deepak Sharma from participating in any football-related activities until further notice," the national federation said in a release.
Before that, the Emergency Committee of the AIFF comprising president Kalyan Chaubey, vice-president N A Haris and treasurer Kipa Ajay, on Monday took stock of the complaints received from the players against Sharma.
Thereafter, a meeting of AIFF member associations was held on Monday night and "Sharma was called and heard for a few minutes before he was advised to leave the meeting".
In the complaint sent to the AIFF, the two players said, according to sources, that Sharma was mostly in an inebriated state and they were "scared for their lives".
Sports Minister Anurag Thakur had also asked the AIFF to take "quick" and "strong legal action" against the official.
On Tuesday, the AIFF also dissolved the three-member committee formed on March 30 to probe the incident, and instead referred the matter to its Disciplinary Committee.
"The AIFF is determined to promote women's football in a safe and enabling environment and will take all necessary steps to ensure this. The case has now been referred to the Disciplinary Committee and will be taken up emergently," Chuabey said.
"The AIFF has taken all steps necessary to ensure the safe passage of the complainants to their hometowns and will continue to provide any support that might be necessary." He said the AIFF has been at the forefront of development of women's football since he took charge as its president.
"There are currently 27,030 registered women players in the country with 15,293 registered between September 2022 and March 2024. The increase in number of women footballers in various age groups is one of the most encouraging trends," Chaubey said.
"This season, we started the IWL 2 for the first time, and there is a definite plan to introduce promotion and relegation in the IWL from the next season. India made their best-ever finish (runners-up) in Turkish Women's Cup recently and defeated European opponents."&nbsp;

The Goa Police have arrested All India Football Federation (AIFF) Executive Committee member Deepak Sharma, on charges of assault as alleged by two female footballers of Khad FC. The incident reportedly took place in the athletes' hotel room amidst the Indian Women's League currently underway, with Sharma accused of being under the influence of alcohol at the time of the alleged physical assault.

The arrest reportedly came about after the aggrieved footballers, supported by several colleagues, proceeded to file a formal complaint against Sharma, leading to his subsequent arrest by the Goa Police.

Amid the ongoing Indian Women's League 2 in Goa, two women footballers have accused the AIFF executive committee member Deepak Sharma of physical assault, Sportstar reported.&nbsp; As per the report, the players have alleged that the incident happened in a hotel room on Thursday night. On Friday, the two approached the competitions committee of AIFF and requested immediate action, 'fearing for their lives.'&nbsp; Quoting the players' complaint, the Sportstar report details the purported incident, 'As the dinner was over, we were boiling eggs as we didn&rsquo;t get dinner due to this reason. Mr. Deepak Sharma got offended and stormed into our room and slapped me (Palak) and Ritika and assaulted us physically. From the first day, he used to be in an inebriated (drunken) state.'&nbsp; The two women, Palak Verma and Ritika Thakur, play for Khad FC.&nbsp; After the incident was made public the next morning, match commissioner Sujesh Rajan as well as the host federation, Goa Football Association were involved in taking swift action.&nbsp; A preliminary investigation was conducted and its report has been sent to the AIFF while the GFA has also filed a complaint at the Mapusa police station.&nbsp;

The Asian Football Confederation has asked the AIFF's ousted legal head, Nilanjan Bhattacharjee, to submit evidence for the allegations of corruption he has levelled against national federation head Kalyan Chaubey, calling it a serious matter.

AIFF president Chaubey on March 6 served a legal notice to the organisation's former principal legal advisor Bhattacharjee for accusing him of corruption.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has asked the AIFF's ousted legal head, Nilanjan Bhattacharjee, to submit evidence for the allegations of corruption he has levelled against national federation head Kalyan Chaubey, calling it a serious matter.

Bhattacharjee, in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has alleged that Chaubey indulged in non-transparent tender processes and made attempts to "siphon off money from the federation" for personal expenses.
Taking cognizance of the matter, the AFC has asked Bhattacharjee to submit a "full written report" by March 18.
"We refer to the attached media articles in which we note that allegations relating to corruption have been made by you against the All India Football Federation (AIFF) President, Mr Kalyan Chaubey.
"In light of the seriousness of this matter, we kindly request that you provide the AFC with a full written report setting out your position on the matter by 18 March 2024 at the latest," Deputy Secretary to the AFC Disciplinary and Ethics Committee, Barry Lysaght, wrote in a letter addressed to Bhattacharjee, on Tuesday.
"Such report should include (without limitation) details of the allegations, any evidence to support such allegations, any steps taken by you to address the allegations at the AIFF (or any other body/person) and any other relevant information or documentation relating to this matter."
Chaubey has called allegations "baseless", accusing Bhattacharjee of trying to damage his reputation.
Bhattacharjee has remained steadfast on his position and has claimed that during his tenure, he once refused to sign a "lopsided" agreement with airline company Indigo where "a minimum guarantee of Rs seven crore" was to be given for content creation rights against "no incentive to Indian football".
But Chaubey has given a point-by-point rebuttal to the allegations by Bhattacharjee, who said he will submit all his evidence to AFC by the due date.
"I am happy because at least the AFC chose to take note of my allegations while everybody within the AIFF, except very few people, decided to keep mum. This can be the beginning," Bhattacharjee told PTI.
"I will submit all the evidence I have with me to the AFC within the stipulated time given by AFC.
"Any individual who thinks about Indian football can join me and share anything they have," he added.

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is mulling a plan to host a few matches of the 2034 FIFA World Cup, set to be held in Saudi Arabia, according to an internal circular of the national sports body.
Last month, FIFA, the world governing body of football, had confirmed following the October 31 deadline that Saudi Arabia was the sole bidder for the 2034 World Cup.
An Emergency Congress of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) held on October 18 had supported Saudi Arabia's bid. India had also supported the move.
It is learnt that AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey told the executive committee members that India should think of hosting a few matches of the 2034 World Cup.
The 48-team 2034 World Cup will have 104 matches and the idea could be that a few of them -- around 10 matches -- could be held in India.
"The president informed the house that India should think or plan to work towards being a co-host for the World Cup in 2034," the draft minutes of the AIFF Executive Committee held on November 9 said.
The FIFA had restricted the hosting eligibility of the 2034 World Cup to Asia or Oceania after it made the decision to host the 2030 edition on three continents (Africa, Europe and South America).
Saudi Arabia is also hosting the AFC Asian Cup in 2027 after India backed out of a bid to host the continental showpiece.

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has sacked its secretary general Shaji Prabhakaran due to "trust deficit", a top official said on Wednesday.
AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey served the termination letter on Tuesday to Prabhakaran, who got the high-profile job on September 3 in 2022.
"The AIFF president has issued the termination letter to Prabhakaran. He is no longer the AIFF Secretary General," AIFF vice-president NA Haris told PTI.
"Deputy secretary general Satyanarayan M will discharge his duties as acting secretary general," he added.
Haris said there has been a "trust deficit" between Chaubey and Prabhakaran and even the AIFF executive committee members are not happy with the way the sacked secretary general worked.
Prabhakaran was appointed at the first executive Committee meeting of the new dispensation which took charge after the elections on September 2.
He was earlier serving as Football Delhi president. He resigned from that post and took charge as AIFF secretary general on September 6, 2022.
A meeting of the executive committee has been called here on Thursday and the members are expected to be officially apprised of the development, besides discussing other matters.
Haris said there is no need for the AIFF executive committee to ratify the decision of the president.
"The post of the secretary general is a paid post and he was not appointed by the executive committee. The president has the power to appoint and remove the secretary general. So the president issued the termination letter," said Haris.&nbsp;

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) on Monday re-appointed Swedish coach Thomas Dennerby as the national women's team head coach ahead of the AFC Olympic Qualifiers Round 2, even though its technical committee had recommended Gokulam Kerala's Anthony Andrews' name.
On July 13, the technical committee of the AIFF under the legendary IM Vijayan as the chairman, had recommended Andrews, who guided Gokulam Kerala FC to back-to-back Indian Women's League (IWL) titles in the last two seasons, to succeed Dennerby whose earlier contract had ended in March.
But, it is learnt that many players in the national team wanted Dennerby's continuation and had requested for the same to the AIFF.
Dennerby was in charge of the national team in the first round of Olympic qualifiers, against Kyrgyzstan on April 4 and 7, which India won.
He is now at the helm again for the second round of the Olympic qualifiers in October.

&ldquo;India has always been a wonderful and efficient host to big tournaments, which was amply demonstrated in the recently concluded FIFA U-17 Women&rsquo;s World Cup." AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey said.
"However, the EC has decided that the overall strategy of the Federation currently remains on focusing on the fundamental goals to strengthen our football at every level from grassroots to youth development." He further added.

Football's governing body FIFA, suspended the All India Football Federation (AIFF) on August 15 due to undue influence from third parties, which according to FIFA is a “serious violation of the FIFA Statutes”. This not only dented India's chances of hosting the U17 Women's World Cup in October but India's national teams will not be able to play international fixtures until the suspension is lifted.
But what caused this violation?
The conflict began when former chief Praful Patel stayed in office beyond his term despite completing his three terms and 12 years as AIFF president in December 2020.
The Supreme Court of India ruled it invalid and relieved Praful Patel and his executive committee from their responsibilities. The SC then appointed a Committee of Administrators (CoA) to oversee the functioning of the AIFF it had selected in May 2022. It was also given the responsibility to draft the constitution for the same body.
On July 16, 2022, CoA submitted the final draft constitution of the AIFF to the Supreme Court for its approval. However, the state units of the AIFF expressed their unhappiness with several provisions in the final draft constitution.
On August 3, the Supreme Court directed the holding of elections to the executive committee of the AIFF by forming an Electoral College made up of 36 representatives of state football associations and 36 eminent former football players.
FIFA though threatened to suspend the AIFF and strip off its rights to host the Women’s U-17 World Cup in October due to a third-party “influence.” But the CoA reassured FIFA after the threat that it was on course to set the AIFF in order.
On August 15, FIFA informed the Indian sports ministry that it remained firm in its opposition to individual members’ inclusion in the electoral college for the upcoming AIFF elections.
Football's governing body finally took the hard call and suspended AIFF a day later. However, FIFA also stated that the suspension will be lifted once an order to set up a committee of administrators to assume the powers of the AIFF Executive Committee was repealed and the AIFF administration regains full control of the AIFF’s daily affairs.

After FIFA banned the All India Football Federation (AIFF) for ‘undue influence from third parties’, the Supreme Court on Wednesday told the government to work on lifting the suspension imposed by football's governing body.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, said that the government has already held talks with FIFA following the suspension.
The Supreme Court also stated that India should have the benefit of hosting the FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup and asked the Centre to take pro active role to hold the event as scheduled in October. If the ban stays, India will be stripped of the hosting rights.
The centre told the court that it had held two meetings with FIFA on Tuesday after it suspended the Indian federation. The matter has been adjourned until Monday, August 22.
This is in fact, the first time that the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has been banned by FIFA in its 85-year-old history.

However, he also saw it as an opportunity to get the country's system right. 'It's very important that all the stakeholders, the federation and the state associations to come together and get the system right and everybody work for the betterment of Indian football,' he added.
Former star Indian footballer Shabbir Ali also saw the decision as an unfortunate one and said that it was a setback for Indian football. He though feels that the U-17 Women's World Cup would still be held in India. 'I am optimistic that things will fall in place and India won't be robbed off the showpiece event, added the Dhyan Chand Awardee.

FIFA has lifted the ban imposed on the All India Football Federation clearing the decks for India to host the Women's U-17 World Cup in October.
"The Bureau of the FIFA Council has decided to lift the suspension that was imposed on the All India Football Federation (AIFF) due to undue third-party influence," the FIFA said in a statement.
The suspension was lifted following Supreme Court's termination of a panel appointed by it in May to oversee the administration of the AIFF. 
"The decision was taken after FIFA received confirmation that the mandate of the committee of administrators that was set up to assume the powers of the AIFF Executive Committee had been terminated and that the AIFF administration had regained full control of the AIFF's daily affairs."
"As a consequence, the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup 2022 scheduled to take place on 11-30 October 2022 will be held in India as planned," the FIFA statement read. 
11 days ago on August 15, FIFA had acted against India's football federation citing 'undue third-party influence' in its daily affairs and stripped the AIFF of its rights to host the U-17 Women's World Cup. 
On Tuesday, the AIFF's acting general secretary Sunando Dhar had requested FIFA secretary general Fatma Samoura to "reconsider their decision of suspending the AIFF".
"It is with immense pleasure that we inform you that the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India took up our matter and vide order dated 22.08.2022 was pleased to pass directions regarding the full repeal of the CoA mandate and consequently the AIFF having full charge of the AIFF's daily affairs," Dhar wrote in the letter.
"In view of the above, we request the FIFA and especially the Bureau to reconsider their decision of suspending the AlFF.
"Since the conditions set out in your Letter for lifting of the suspension stand satisfied, we request that a order to that effect be passed at the earliest for the AIFF to continue with the smooth running of football in India," the letter further stated.
The CoA, headed by former Supreme Court judge A R Dave, had been overseeing the affairs of the AIFF since the May 18 order of the top court, which ousted Praful Patel as the president of the federation. The other two members of the CoA are former chief election commissioner S Y Quraishi and ex Indian football team captain Bhaskar Ganguly.
"The day-to-day management of AIFF shall be exclusively looked after by the AIFF Administration led by the Acting Secretary General. The mandate of the Committee of Administrators appointed by the order of this Court stands terminated," the SC said in its verdict on Monday.
The top court also postponed the August 28 elections of the AIFF by one week to allow a changed electoral college and the start of the nomination process.
The order came on a fresh plea filed by the Sports Ministry seeking modification of the May 18 and August 3 orders of the court after consultation with the FIFA.
The AIFF elections will now be held on September 2 with the legendary Bhaichung Bhutia and former goalkeeper Kalyan Chaubey set to have a straight fight for the post of president.
