When asked about the Indian team without Pujara, Rahane, and Ravichandran Ashwin, Rohit had a brief slip of the tongue during the post-match press conference. "No, no, absolutely [I will miss them around]. Look, they have so much experience and have won so many matches for India. So, when you look around and they're not there... By the way, Ajinkya Rahane hasn't retired, aap mere ko marwaoge yar [you guys are going to get me in trouble]," Rohit remarked, laughing.
Rohit further clarified that the doors for Pujara and Rahane to return to the Test team are still open. "I&rsquo;m speaking as if all three have retired [chuckles]. Pujara hasn&rsquo;t announced his retirement. You mentioned all their names together, so I said that. They're not here right now, but I don&rsquo;t know, they can still come back, the door is open for them," he added.
Pujara and Rahane have been integral to India&rsquo;s middle order for over a decade. Pujara has played 103 Tests, accumulating 7,195 runs at an average of 43.60, with 19 centuries and 35 fifties. His highest score is 206*. Rahane, meanwhile, has featured in 85 Tests, scoring 5,077 runs at an average of 38.46, with 12 centuries and 26 fifties. His best score is 188.
However, both players&rsquo; performances have dipped significantly since India&rsquo;s historic victory at The Gabba in January 2021, which was pivotal to their series win in Australia. Since that iconic triumph, Pujara has played 22 more Tests, managing only 1,084 runs at a below-par average of 29.29, with just one century and seven fifties. Rahane's form has been similarly underwhelming, scoring only 606 runs in his last 16 Tests at an average of 22.44, with four half-centuries.
Despite his recent struggles in Tests, Rahane had a standout performance in IPL 2023 with Chennai Super Kings, scoring 326 runs in 11 innings at an impressive average of 32.60 and a strike rate of 172.48. His strong IPL form could potentially keep him in the mix longer than Pujara, who hasn&rsquo;t played in the IPL since 2014.
Pujara, however, has an exceptional first-class record, having scored 19,812 runs in 258 matches at an average of 52.00, including 61 centuries and 77 half-centuries, with a highest score of 352. His impressive domestic form keeps him in the conversation for a Test return, should the opportunity arise.

Rahane, who scored 89 in Indian first innings in WTC final, has just completed 5,000 runs in the traditional format in 83 Tests.

Senior India batter Ajinkya Rahane will be plying his trade for the English county side Leicestershire in division two, after finishing his two-Test assignment with Indian team against the West Indies.
Rahane, a former India captain, recently made a successful comeback to the Indian team during the World Test Championship final against Australia earlier this month.
Rahane had inked the deal with Leicestershire back in January and was supposed to play eight first class games and also the entire Royal London Cup (domestic 50 over competition) between June to September, after the completion of his IPL stint with Chennai Super Kings.
However, the plan had to be shelved since he made a comeback to Indian Test team and couldn't join his county side immediately after the IPL was over.
"Ajinkya, after the two Tests in West Indies (which is supposed to end on July 24), is supposed to fly directly to England and join Leicestershire for the remainder of the season. He will play Royal London Cup in August and a possible four County games in September as he is unlikely to be a part of white ball scheme of things," a BCCI source in know of things, told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
This will be Rahane's second county stint, having played for Hampshire in the 2019 season when he was dropped from the 50 over World Cup side.
Rahane, who scored 89 in Indian first innings in WTC final, has just completed 5,000 runs in the traditional format in 83 Tests.
While most of the top Indian players will shift their focus on 50 over cricket, Rahane will get more red-ball game time through the month of September, before he is back in India for the full fledged Indian domestic season, followed by a tour of South Africa in December.

One man who didn't get the amount of credit he deserved following India's historic Test series win in Australia in 2020-21 was undoubtedly Ajinkya Rahane.
After being 36 all out in the 1st Test in Adelaide to Virat Kohli leaving after that, Team India was in a muddle.
The responsibility of an improbable comeback fell on Rahane's shoulders and boy, did he make a statement.
India bounced back to win the series 2-1 and it was regarded as the best fightback in cricket history.
But during this time, Rahane the batter wasn't living up to the expectations. The writing was on the wall and Jinx lost his spot in Tests after India's 2-1 Test series loss in South Africa in January 2022.
In the 12 months before being dropped, Rahane's average fell to exactly 20.
But what changed in just over a year that made Rahane a frontrunner in India's middle order for the most important Test of them all?
Firstly, let's see how Rahane's possible replacements performed when Jinx was out of India's Test set-up.
Shreyas Iyer grabbed his opportunity with both hands with a hundred in his very first Test innings and performed exceedingly well for a while. But unfortunately, he picked up an injury and had to undergo surgery. No one knows when he'll return.
Suryakumar Yadav was brought into the Test team following an exceptional show with the bat in limited-overs cricket but he had a forgettable debut. Sky was out for 8 in the only innings he played and was dropped after that.
Rishabh Pant was India's game-changer in Tests but he had an accident which ruled him out indefinitely.
During this time, a few other batters also went through a lean patch. While KL Rahul underperformed in whites and was later sidelined due to injury, Mayank Agarwal didn't last past the Sri Lanka series in 2022.
When all of this was happening, one batter who made a strong case for a comeback was Ajinkya Rahane.
IPL 2023 saw a different Rahane bat for the Chennai Super Kings. After his initial exploits in the cash-rich league, the BCCI named the 34-year-old in the World Test Championship squad.
But it wasn't because of his fiery knocks in the IPL but the foundation of his comeback was laid sometime back.
The former No. 5 batter for India had a great outing in Ranji Trophy, where he scored 2 hundreds and averaged almost 58.
It was followed by a double ton in the Duleep Trophy. Clearly, the board was left with no other option but to bring Jinx back into the Test set-up.
Rahane's comeback might be circumstantial but the experience he brings to the side might be a blessing in disguise for the Indian team.

Suresh Raina still stands atop with his 16-ball 50 that he hit against Punjab in 2014.&nbsp; MS Dhoni revealed that he asked Ajinkya to not take stress and that the team will back him. 'Me and Jinks spoke at the start of the season and I told him to play to his strengths, use your ability to manipulate the fields', Dhoni added. Ajinkya Rahane didn't start in the first two games but food poisoning to Moeen Ali gave him a chance and he grabbed it marvelously with a 27-ball-61 as CSK won vs MI by 7 wickets.&nbsp;

On Day 1 of Mumbai's Ranji game against Assam, Shaw slammed a double ton and registered his career-best first-class score. On Wednesday morning, it didn't take him long to reach his triple hundred as he crossed the 300-run mark off 326 deliveries. He eventually finished with 379 runs off 383 balls.

Currently, there are only three Indian players in the A+ category - Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma &amp; Jasprit Bumrah. While there are 5 players in the A category - R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul &amp; Mohd Shami.

Out of favour Team India Test specialists, Ajinkya Rahane and Ishant Sharma, are expected to face the axe from BCCI central contracts list during the board's Apex Council meeting which is to be held on December 21.&nbsp;
One of the main agendas of the meeting is the 'Retainership contract' for both Indian men and women cricketers.
Wicketkeeper-batter Wriddhiman Saha will also be removed from the contracts list as he was specifically told at the start of the year that he won't be selected for India again.
Meanwhile, there are others who will most likely earn promotions, namely opener Shubman Gill &amp; World No. 1 T20 batter Suryakumar Yadav, who are currently in the 'C' category.
Hardik Pandya, who many expect could take the reins from Rohit Sharma in T20s, is also expected to be promoted from Grade C to B, only a year after his demotion from Grade A to C, when he wasn't playing regularly for Team India.
An A+ contract offers Rs 7 crore, Group A Rs 5 crore, Group B Rs 3 crore and Rs Group C offers Rs 1 crore to the cricketers as an annual retainer fee.

In an unusual act, West Zone captain Ajinjya Rahane asked his teammate Yashasvi Jaiswal to leave the field for excessive sledging. 
The situation unfolded on the fifth day of the Duleep Trophy final in Coimbatore. 
Jaiswal was consistently throwing verbal volleys to South Zone batter Ravi Teja while fielding close to the bat. After Teja's complaint, Rahane spoke to Yashasvi but the youngster appeared to be animated when the captain had a word with him.

Then, Rahane ordered Yashasvi to leave the field and west Zone fielded with 10 men only for seven over before 20-year-old Jaiswal returned to the field. 
Jaiswal was later declared Man of the Match after West Zone won the final by 294 runs.
Reacting to the incident after the match, Rahane said that he believes in respecting the opponents, umpires and match officials and that certain incidents need to be treated in a certain manner.

West Zone won the 2022 Duleep Trophy after a massive 294 run win over South Zone on the final day of the 5th test in Coimbatore on Sunday.
The Ajinkya Rahane-led side put up a massive total of 585 for four in their second innings, courtesy a 265 by Yasashvi Jaiswal and 127 by Sarfraz Khan. South Zone on the other hand, was bowled out for 234 in 71.2 overs. Major contributor with the ball was spinner Shams Mulani who had a decent spell of 4/51 on the final day.

Former Australian spinner Bradd Hogg backed the Indian selectors on their decision of dropping Ajinkya Rahane and Ishant Sharma. The 2 Test veterans along with Cheteshwar Pujara and Widdhiman Saha were dropped from the Sri Lanka Test, earlier this year. While Pujara got his place back in the Indian squad fr the upcoming rescheduled 5th Test match between India and England after his splendid performance in County Cricket, the other players could not get their places back.Calling it a great decision Hogg said that the 2 players, Ajinkya Rahane and Ishant Sharma have been ageing and have not been performing for Team India of late. He further added that, 'you've got to move on and bring youth in and rotate them so that they get experience alongside those who are already experienced.
