Speaking with The Indian Express, Dr Pooja Pillai, consultant physician told that while fasting can lead to rapid weight loss, it comes with significant health risks like a drop in blood sugar levels, headaches, gastric issues, dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. Dr Pillai also said that even though our body can survive without food for a long time it depends on someone&rsquo;s body type. Thus, fasting should be done under strict medical supervision.&nbsp;
Explaining to The Indian Express Dr Pillai, added,&nbsp; &ldquo;Weight loss depends on various factors such as an individual&rsquo;s starting weight, basal metabolic rate, existing co-morbid conditions, and overall health. Glycogen, stored in the liver and muscles, is the body&rsquo;s first reserve of energy. As glycogen is bound with water, the initial weight loss is largely due to water loss. This can result in a rapid drop of 2-4 Kg within the first few days. After the glycogen stores are depleted, the body shifts to burning fat for energy.&rdquo;&nbsp;

Fasting for 2-3 days continuously can have various effects on the body, both positive and negative:
Nutrient Deficiency: Prolonged fasting without adequate nutrient intake can lead to deficiencies.
Muscle Loss: While the body primarily uses fat for energy during ketosis, prolonged fasting can lead to muscle breakdown.
Blood Pressure: There can be a risk of low blood pressure and dizziness, particularly when standing up quickly (orthostatic hypotension).
Medical Conditions: Fasting can be risky for individuals with certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, eating disorders, or heart conditions.

&nbsp;Delhi Water Minister Atishi ended her indefinite fast over the water scarcity in the national capital after she was hospitalised early Tuesday, AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh said.
At a press conference here, Singh said Atishi's health deteriorated after being on fast for nearly five days. Her blood sugar level dropped to 36 mg/dL and she was admitted to the LNJP Hospital around 3.45 am, he added.
The MP said doctors insisted on her hospitalisation and even warned that her life could be in peril.
Atishi is now admitted to the ICU and tests are being conducted, so the indefinite hunger strike has been stopped, he said.
The AAP MP said he would write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to provide Delhi with its rightful share of water from Haryana. The issue will also be raised by AAP and its political allies, he added.
In the last three weeks, Delhi's share in the Yamuna was reduced by Haryana by 100 MGD. However, it has started increasing over the last two days and the shortfall is only 90 MGD now, he said.

Delhi water minister Atishi on Friday began her indefinite hunger strike in south Delhi's Bhogal to press on her demand for more water from Haryana.
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's wife Sunita Kejriwal, along with AAP MP Sanjay Singh and Delhi Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj, were present as Atishi began her fast.
Sunita Kejriwal read out a message from the chief minister, who is currently lodged in Tihar jail, in which he expressed hope that Atishi's 'tapasya' would be successful.
The chief minister said he was immensely pained by seeing on TV the plight of the people facing water shortage amid the ongoing intense heatwave, he said.
"It's our culture to provide water to the thirsty. Delhi gets water from neighbouring states. We hoped support of neighbouring states in such intense heat. But, Haryana reduced Delhi's water share.
"Although there are governments of different parties in the two states but is this time for politics over water," he said, referring to the BJP that is in power in Haryana.
Earlier, Atishi, accompanied by Sunita Kejriwal, Singh, Bharadwaj and other leaders paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat before heading to Bhogal.
There is such intense heat in Delhi and the water requirements of the people have increased. In such times, the people need more water, but there is a shortage. All the water in Delhi comes from its neighbouring states, Atishi said as she began her indefinite fast.
She said her appeal to the Haryana government and a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for help did not yield any result and Delhi was not getting adequate water.
"I am left with no choice now but to start an indefinite hunger strike as I am unable to watch the plight of the men, women and children of Delhi. This indefinite Jal Satyagrah will continue till Delhi people get water from Haryana," she said.
Delhi gets 1005 MGD water which is supplied to people in the city. For the last two weeks, Haryana is giving 513 MGD instead of 613 MGD water to Delhi. More than 28 lakh people face shortage when Haryana stops 100 MGD of water, she said.
Haryana has further reduced the release of Delhi's share from 100 MGD to 120 MGD in the last two days, she claimed.
In the morning, the minister said she would begin her indefinite hunger strike in Bhogal as, despite all efforts, the Haryana government was not releasing the full share of Delhi's water.
"I will start 'Pani Satyagraha' from today... I will start an indefinite fast at Bhogal, Jangpura from 12 o'clock until the people of Delhi get their rightful share of water from Haryana," she said on X earlier in the day," she said on X.
The minister has claimed that Haryana for the last two weeks was releasing 100 million gallons per day less water to Delhi against its share of 613 MGD, as a result, 28 lakh people in Delhi were affected.
Delhi is facing an unprecedented heatwave as a result the water demand has increased.

Delhi Water Minister Atishi on Wednesday said that she has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the water crisis in the national capital and threatened to go on an indefinite strike from June 21 if the issue is not resolved within a couple of days.
Addressing a press conference here, Atishi said Delhi is grappling with a water crisis since Haryana is not releasing the capital's share of water.
"Yesterday, Haryana released 513 MGD of water to Delhi as against 613 MGD. One MGD of water is for 28,500 people. This means that water was not released for over 28 lakh people," she added.
The minister said people are not only battling heatwave conditions but also water shortage.
"I have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the water crisis requesting him to resolve the issue. If the crisis is not solved within two days, I will go on an indefinite strike from June 21," she said.
Atishi said they have written multiple letters to the Haryana government to resolve the issue.
Meanwhile, Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva accused Atishi of indulging in theatrics to distract attention from theft and black marketing of water, and said that the AAP government should be sacked for its inaction.
Atishi has now stooped to theatrics to divert attention from theft and black marketing of water. Haryana provided surplus water to Delhi yesterday and there are official documents to prove it but she is now resorting to drama, he charged.
"This government should be sacked," he said alleging the ruling AAP failed to provide water to the people of Delhi.
Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav said that Atishi should have written the letter to Prime Minister Modi earlier.
The Delhi government should have prepared a good plan involving availability of water and its distribution, he said.&nbsp;

At a press conference here on Wednesday, Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva said a defamation notice has been sent to Atishi, demanding a public apology for her claim.
"Atishi failed to provide evidence of who approached her, how and when. The AAP is undergoing a crisis in Delhi, which is why they are making such baseless allegations out of frustration. But we will not let her get away with this," he said.
Sachdeva chief asked Atishi to submit her phone to an investigation agency to prove her claim.
The Delhi BJP's lawyer said the party has sent a defamation notice to Atishi to withdraw her statement which he termed "false, defamatory, and concocted" and claimed was made with a "mala fide intent".
Further legal action will be taken against her if she fails to back up her claims, he said.&nbsp;

The AAP on Sunday attacked the BJP for fielding Bansuri Swaraj from the New Delhi constituency in the Lok Sabha elections, claiming she had represented "anti-national forces" in court, even as she hit back at Delhi's ruling party over its choice of candidate from the seat.
Delhi Minister Atishi said at a press conference that Swaraj -- the daughter of late BJP leader and former Union minister Sushma Swaraj -- should apologise to the people of the country for taking up such cases and also demanded that the saffron party replace her.
"Swaraj has repeatedly defended in court fugitive Lalit Modi, who has fled the country after embezzling lakhs of crores of rupees. From 2012 to 2014, she consistently defended Lalit Modi from lower courts to the high court to the Supreme Court in the case of his passport," the senior AAP leader alleged.
"He fled with his passport before the division bench's order came and has not returned since. Not only that, Lalit Modi had also thanked Bansuri Swaraj via tweet for fighting his case," she claimed.
When two women were stripped and paraded during the violence in Manipur, Swaraj stood for the BJP-led Centre in the Supreme Court, Atishi claimed at the press conference.
"Today, she will go to women in the New Delhi constituency and ask them for votes," Atishi said.
The Delhi minister further alleged, "When the Chandigarh mayoral elections were held and there was an attempt at vote theft, and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court called that election a 'murder of democracy', Swaraj stood for the 'fake mayor' from the BJP in the Supreme Court." Atishi also demanded that the BJP replace Swaraj as its candidate from the constituency.
Somnath Bharti, the INDIA bloc candidate from the New Delhi constituency, also demanded that Swaraj and the BJP should "apologise for such a blunder".
During the press conference, Atishi also spoke about outgoing BJP MP Harsh Vardhan's decision to bow out of electoral politics.
Vardhan is known for his honesty and hard work for the country, the people of his parliamentary constituency and his assembly constituency, she said.
"He always raised issues of public interest and spoke for them. I think it has become very clear that just as he was removed from the position of health minister at one time for raising some issues, today, it seems that perhaps his ticket has been cut due to his honesty," she claimed.
Barring North East Delhi, where the BJP has named Manoj Tiwari for a third term, the saffron party has fielded new faces from four constituencies -- New Delhi (Swaraj), West Delhi (Kamaljeet Sehrawat), South Delhi (Ramvir Singh Bidhuri) and Chandni Chowk (Praveen Khandelwal).
The BJP is yet to name its candidates for East Delhi -- where MP Gautam Gambhir has said he requested party chief JP Nadda to relieve him of his political duties -- and North West Delhi.
Hitting back, Swaraj questioned the AAP on its choice of candidate, who was allegedly beaten up by his own cadre in Rajendra Nagar on Saturday.
Responding to the AAP's allegations, she said, "I would like to ask the AAP -- why have you fielded a candidate who was beaten up by his own cadre in Rajendra Nagar yesterday (Saturday)?" "They have named a candidate who is not liked by his own party members. They can put allegations against us but people will give them a reply in the elections," she said.&nbsp;

The AAP on Tuesday claimed there are apprehensions that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) will arrest Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on November 2 after questioning him in a money laundering case linked to the alleged excise policy scam.
The ruling party in Delhi also alleged that the BJP was trying to finish it off by putting its top leaders behind bars.
Kejriwal has been issued the summons under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and according to sources, the ED will record his statement once he deposes at the probe agency's Delhi office at 11 am on November 2.
This is the first time that Kejriwal has been summoned by the ED. He was questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the case in April.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, Delhi Cabinet Minister Atishi claimed the BJP was using these tactics to target the AAP as it knows that it cannot defeat Kejriwal in elections.
"According to various sources, the ED will also arrest Arvind Kejriwal and put him in jail on November 2. Today, the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi want to eliminate the Aam Aadmi Party. This is why, one after another, AAP leaders are being arrested in false cases and sent to jail," she said.
Atishi said Kejriwal will be arrested not because there is any case or evidence against him but because he has spoken out against the BJP.
"He will be arrested only because Prime Minister Modi is afraid of him. They know that if there is one leader in this country who openly speaks against the BJP and fights against the party, it is Arvind Kejriwal. Since Narendra Modi became Prime Minister in 2014, he has been most troubled by one person and that is Arvind Kejriwal," she said.
In 2015, the BJP had been winning one state election after another but Kejriwal managed to confine the BJP to just three seats in Delhi, while the AAP won 67 of the 70 seats, she said.
In 2020 again, Atishi said, the BJP put all its efforts into the Delhi elections, fielding its leaders and creating a charged atmosphere across the country.
"However, the people of Delhi showed their love for their son Arvind Kejriwal and made him the chief minister of Delhi once more.
"When the MCD elections came, the BJP knew that the people of Delhi would elect Arvind Kejriwal and throw the BJP out of the MCD. They delayed the MCD elections, imposed restrictions and conducted elections along with the Gujarat elections. However, despite all this, the people of Delhi still elected Arvind Kejriwal in the MCD elections," she said.
Referring to the arrest of the AAP's top leaders, including Manish Sisodia, Sanjay Singh and Satyendar Jain, Atishi claimed it only means that the BJP wants to "finish off the AAP".
Jain has been granted interim bail in a money laundering case.
"After Kejriwal is arrested, the BJP will target other leaders of the INDIA alliance and its chief ministers using the CBI and the ED.
"Next they will target Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren since they have been unable to defeat him. Then they will target Tejashwi Yadav since they have not been able to break the alliance in Bihar. Then Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin will be targeted," Atishi claimed.
"I want to tell Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party are not afraid of going to jail nor are they afraid of false cases. They will fight till the last breath to protect the Constitution of this country," she said.
AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj echoed Atishi's views and asserted the party has only grown stronger in the face of opposition.
"The BJP fears Kejriwal's popularity and honesty. Every time an attempt is made to end the AAP, it emerges stronger with double force.
"In the history of independent India, the AAP has been the most preyed upon party by the Centre. Approximately, 170 fabricated cases have been registered against the AAP and its leaders. Forty-eight of these fabricated cases are registered against Sanjay Singh alone by the Uttar Pradesh government and the BJP's other governments. Dozens of cases have also been registered against Kejriwal," he claimed.
Addressing a press conference, the AAP's Delhi state convener Gopal Rai said the AAP will keep working for the common man.
"Liquor policy is just an excuse. The BJP's goal is to eliminate the AAP. If it were only about the liquor policy, there wouldn't have been CBI raids at CM's office before and the Shunglu Committee wouldn't have scrutinised every single file. In the liquor policy case, even the CBI had called Arvind Kejriwal and he answered all their questions," he added.

After a boundary wall of a government school collapsed following heavy rains, Delhi minister Atishi directed senior officials of the education department, principals and vice-principals to conduct a physical inspection of all government schools on Sunday.
In case of any deficiencies or serious problem is found, the school should be cordoned off to avoid any mishap, according to a statement from the education minister's office.

Meanwhile, after visiting the incident site, the PWD minister all visited pump house at ITO and inspected water-logging issues. The minister walked in knee-deep water and asserted that the city has been lashed by record-breaking rain leading to inconvenience.&nbsp;

The Arvind Kejriwal government is expected to appoint MLAs Atishi and Saurabh Bhardwaj as ministers after the resignation of Delhi ministers Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain from the Cabinet after their arrests in corruption cases.
Chief Minister Kejriwal has sent the requisite documents for Atishi and Bhardwaj's appointments to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, according to sources quoted by NDTV.
Bhardwaj is also vice-chairman of the Delhi Jal Board, while Atishi was an advisor to Sisodia on education between 2015 and 2017.

Delhi lieutenant governor sends legal notice to AAP leaders for defamation

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar K Saxena sent a legal notice to AAP leaders on Monday over their "false and derogatory" charges against him for his alleged involvement in a Rs 1,400 crore "scam" during his tenure as the KVIC chairman, news agency PTI reported.&nbsp;
The notice was served to &nbsp;Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders Atishi, Durgesh Pathak, Saurabh Bharadwaj, Sanjay Singh and Jasmine Shah, among others. The notice also asks AAP leaders &nbsp;to issue a press release "directing all members of the party and all persons associated with it, whether directly or indirectly, to cease and desist from spreading and circulating false, defamatory, malicious and unsubstantiated statements".
Furthermore, the legal notice asks the AAP leaders to comply with the requisitions within 48 hours of its receipt.
The AAP last week alleged corruption by Delhi LG when he was KVIC chairman in 2016.&nbsp; The Arvind Kejriwal-led ruling party demanded probe into the alleged scam by CBI and ED.&nbsp;

The MLA from Delhi's Kalkaji Assembly constituency will address the UNGA at its headquarters in New York on the theme, 'New Urban Agenda', on Thursday.
"The @ArvindKejriwal model of governance in Delhi can provide solutions to many challenges faced by cities and countries all over the world. This is the reason why the world stage wants to learn more about the Delhi model," she said in a series of tweets on Wednesday.
In a statement, her office said effective people-centric policies of the Arvind Kejriwal government have provided hassle-free, quality access to basic amenities to the people of Delhi.
It said the Delhi government's policies have made peoples' lives easier, and they have now become a matter of interest and discussion across the world.
"In recognition of the same on the global stage, the Kalkaji MLA has been invited to speak at the United Nations General Assembly at their headquarters in New York," the legislator's office added.
In the high-level UNGA meeting, speakers will focus on their contributions to the overall vision, goals and targets of achieving the 'New Urban Agenda', Atishi's office said.
It said member states will be encouraged to describe national and regional challenges and policy responses, and to state commitments to achieve transformative outcomes.
"Atishi will speak alongside the mayors of Bogota and Barcelona on the ‘Best Practices of Leading Locally’, where she will present the Delhi government’s vision and implementation of how a thriving, diverse and densely populated city can strive to provide a high quality of life to all its citizens by ensuring everyone has equitable access to power, water, education, health and public transport," her office added.
Atishi, who graduated from Delhi-based St. Stephen's College and received her Master’s degree in History from Oxford University on a Chevening scholarship, is considered to have been instrumental in the successful implementation of the Delhi government’s education reform agenda.
She also spearheaded the Delhi government's flagship Mohalla Sabha project, which seeks to decentralise governance by empowering every citizen.
"It is a privilege for me to join the panel of eminent mayors from all across the globe and discuss the effective people-centric policies of the Kejriwal government at such a prestigious international forum," Atishi said in a statement.
"This is a great opportunity for governments to learn from one another and help people all over the world through policies that are closely connected to the needs of citizens," she added.
