After winning the toss, England chose to bat first. They had a fast start, then went from 55-0 to 60-3 in a mini-collapse. Batting at no. 5, Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root forged a resurgent combination. Reading the length and line of the Indian spinners with confidence, Bairstow contributed a vital 61-run partnership with Joe Root while appearing quite at ease.&nbsp;
India required something exceptional to end the collaboration, and Axar Patel delivered just that. It was a remarkable delivery. Despite bowling from the corner of the crease, Axar landed the ball on the middle stump and still managed to find enough turn to beat the bat.

As the T20 World Cup buildup picks up pace, Indian spinner Axar Patel said he first wants to focus on the IPL and the England Test series.

Forced to sit out of the ODI World Cup with an injury, Axar Patel said he is pinning his hopes on IPL 2024 to rekindle his chances of getting a berth in the Indian squad for the T20 showpiece in June.
The left-arm spinner gave a good account of himself in the first T20I against Afghanistan Thursday, taking two wickets while conceding 23 runs in four overs.
"My job is to give 100 percent to my work ethics and the process. I am not worrying too much about what will happen to the World Cup team selection, and if I do that, I will be putting pressure on myself.
Right now, I want to focus on the IPL and then we also have a Test series against England coming up soon," Axar said in the post-match press conference.
India have just two more T20Is scheduled ahead of the World Cup to be held in the West Indies and the USA, and Axar was aware that there will be too many contenders jostling for an India berth.
"Yeah, we are going to play the last two T20Is before the World Cup, and then we have the IPL. I know there is a lot of competition out there (for a WC spot in India team), but my competition is to myself and I just want to focus on adding to my skill sets," he added.
That polishing the skill-level part, Axar said, had begun during his recovery time at the NCA.
"It was unfortunate that I got injured during the World Cup and missed it. But I took it positively and tried to improve my game. I was working during my time at the NCA &ndash; things like line and length, slower ball and such variations.
I was trying to add something more to my bowling as a left-arm spinner, as we don't have that many variations like a leg-spinner such as googly. But I was looking to add those 5 or 10 percent to my bowling," said Axar.
The 29-year-old was also delighted to see his efforts at the NCA paying off in the series against Australia and in the first game against the Afghans.
"I was not trying to be overtly aggressive on this (Mohali) pitch and batsmen took some chances against me and that also worked for me. I was trying to mix my deliveries up like slower balls etc.
It worked for me in the series against Australia as well and I have carried that confidence into this series. I am looking at putting more pressure on the batsmen," said the Gujarat bowler.

"Even if it's not a tear and may be a strain, it would take two weeks to heal. Yesterday, one saw on TV that Axar had a strapping on his thigh which is an indicator that the quadriceps strain was bothering him. If it's not a Grade 2 tear, he could still play the World Cup but it depends on the extent of injuries. But it's good to know, he has not sustained any forearm fracture," a source told PTI.

Chasing the total, India batters couldn't negotiate the spinners as they managed 155 for 9.
"No one thought this wicket would play like that, both teams got surprised but New Zealand played better cricket. The new ball was turning more than the old ball. The way it turned and bounced surprised us," Pandya said during the post-match presentation.
Suryakumar Yadav (47) and Hardik Pandya (21) had conjured up hope of a successful chase when they had a little partnership going but all hopes were dashed after both departed in quick succession.
"Till me and Surya were batting, we thought we would pull it off. In hindsight, we ended up giving 25 runs more than the par." "The way Washington bowled, batted and fielded, it was more like Washington against New Zealand than India against New Zealand. If he and Axar can continue the way they are, it will help the Indian cricket a lot." New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner also said it was "a bit of a shock" for everyone the way ball spun in the second innings. "But it was a great game and it was pretty tight at the end, we saw a lot of runs in the ODI series and it was nice to see the ball spin a bit more," he said.
The win was set up by Devon Conway (52) and Daryl Mitchell (59), who smashed commanding fifties.
"I don't think we were ever safe, 170-odd was nice with Daryl hitting a couple over and he batted extremely well, we knew we had a sniff with 180.
"It was nice to chip some wickets in the powerplay and we had troubled with that in the ODIs," added Santner, who had 18 dot balls in his 2 for 11.
"At the toss we were going to bowl because we know chasing is so good over here and especially with the dew. That's always the challenge (on captain using himself).
"You don't want to be seen doing the easy overs and stuff like that. We knew it was spinning in the powerplay and it was nice to chip one out." Mitchell, who was adjudged Player of the Match, for his sensational innings, said he trusted his skills and tried to keep it simple.
"It is nice to contribute to a score which helps us win a game. I thought the way the boys bowled at the end was pretty special. It is nice to take some momentum into the rest of the T20 series," he said.
"The guys who went in early said it was pretty difficult against spin because of the tacky nature. It was my job to build a partnership and then take the onus on myself after Conway's departure.
"For me it is being really present and really clear, keeping it simple as possible and trusting my skills, not every time it comes off in T20 cricket but it is always nice when you get a few off the middle." India and New Zealand will face off in second T20 on Sunday in Lucknow.

India earlier in the 1st innings had scored 404 runs courtesy of Pujara's 90 and Shreyas Iyer's 86. Bangladesh however could only garner 150 runs in their first innings. In the second essay, India added another 258 runs as Pujara and Shubman Gill hit a century each. The second and final Test starts on December 22 in Mirpur.

Team India's death bowling has not been upto the mark in the last few games and skipper Rohit Sharma feels that team needs to focus on the same and try to improve the performance.

While the Indian bowlers only managed to take 3 wickets in their 2nd T20I against South Africa, Rohit feels that the team's death bowling hasn't been effective in the last few games and that they want to execute their bowling plans in a certain way.
"To bowl and bat at the death is very tough. That is where the game is decided. It is not concerning, but we need to pick ourselves and get our act together" Rohit said in his post match interview.
With the Indian contingent set to fly to Australia post the 3rd T20I on Tuesday, India will be hoping their bowlers can end the series on a high before the T20 World Cup Down Under.
