Chief Minister Basavraj Bommai had conceded defeat as trends showed a massive Congress surge.

After the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lost the Karnataka Assembly elections, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Saturday tendered his resignation to Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot.
"I have tendered my resignation and it has been accepted," Bommai told reporters.
Chief Minister Basavraj Bommai had conceded defeat as trends showed a massive Congress surge.
He said BJP will emerge victorious in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Bommai won with a margin of 35,978 votes from Shiggaon constituency but many of his ministerial colleagues lost. "...I take responsibility for this debacle. There are multiple reasons for this. We will find out all the reasons and strengthen the party once again for Parliament elections..," he said.

The felicitation ceremony was scheduled for 9.30 AM on Tuesday, but Karnataka Chief Minister only arrived at 11:15 AM.

Tennis great Bjorn Borg declined felicitation by Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai after the latter arrived almost two hours late for the event in Bengaluru.
Borg, who was in the city accompanying his son Leo who was participating in the Bengaluru Challenger, left the programme to watch his son play.
The Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association (KSLTA) had organised the event to honour the 11-time Grand Slam winner along with Indian tennis icon Vijay Amritraj, but the ceremony never took place due to the late arrival of the Chief Minister.
The programme was scheduled to start at 9:30 AM, but with Leo taking court at 11:00 am, and no sign of the minister till then, Borg decided to give the event a miss.
Bommai did arrive around 11:15 but left the venue 15-20 minutes later after watching a few points.

Karnataka reveals how much it's paying to lawyers for Maharashtra border dispute case in Supreme Court

An 18 January order by Karnataka's Law department said that it has fixed a professional fee of ₹59.9 lakhs per day for the battery of lawyers.

Amid a raging political war over the border dispute between Karnataka and Maharashtra, the Karnataka government revealed the amount of money that it is paying to a battery of senior lawyers to fight the case in the Supreme Court.
An order by Karnataka's Law department said that it has fixed a professional fee of ₹59.9 lakhs per day for the team of lawyers, according to the news agency PTI. As per the January 18 order, senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi will be paid ₹22 lakh per day for appearing before the apex court and Rs 5.5 lakh per day for conferences and other works.
Another lawyer Shyam Divan will be paid ₹6 lakhs a day for appearing before the court, ₹1.5 lakhs per day for preparation of the case and other works and ₹10 lakhs for outstation visits per day. The government will bear the expenses of hotel facilities and business class air travel.
The Advocate General of Karnataka will be paid ₹3 lakhs a day for appearing in the SC, ₹1.25 lakhs per day for preparing cases and other works, ₹2 lakhs on outstation visits apart from bearing the cost of hotel and business class air travels.
The state government has also hired senior lawyer Uday Holla, a former advocate general of Karnataka, who will be paid ₹2 lakhs per day for appearing in the apex court, ₹75,000 per day for preparation of the case, ₹1.5 lakhs per day for settlement of pleadings and other works, and ₹1.5 lakhs per day for outstation visits apart from hotel and travel expenses.

47-year-old Bengaluru man, identified as S Pradeep shot himself in his car on Sunday and left behind a note naming BJP MLA Aravind Limbavali and 5 others for causing him mental harassment.

Former Karnataka minister and BJP MLA Arvind Limbavali is among six people named in the FIR in connection with the death of a businessman, police said on Monday.
Pradeep (47) was found dead in his car near Bengaluru on Sunday evening, they said, adding that he had allegedly shot himself in the head.
He had purportedly left behind an eight-page death note that named Mahadevapura MLA Aravind Limbavali and five others, according to police.
Limbavali is accused number 3 in the FIR, which also names -- Gopi K, Somaiah, Ramesh Reddy G, Jayarama Reddy, and Raghava Bhat.
The case has been registered at Kaggalipura police station.
The FIR is based on a complaint by Pradeep's wife along with the death note.
Responding to a question on the case registered against Limbavali, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said: "Action is being taken as per law...actions will follow in the future too in accordance with law." Stating that Pradeep was a BJP worker and had initially handled his social media account, Limbavali on his part said he had only tried to help the businessman, and was ready for any inquiry. "In fact, I demand for an inquiry, for the truth to come out." The legislator said he doesn't know as to what was the motive behind mentioning his name in the death note, and ruled out the possibility of any conspiracy against him.
Speaking to reporters in Hubballi, Karnataka Congress President D K Shivakumar alleged that the government would soon shut the case by filing a 'B report'.
"They did the same for cases involving people who were ministers earlier. Now, they will do the same in the case of Limbavali too. I know," he said in a dig at the ruling BJP.
According to the police, the death note pointed to the six accused for doing injustice to Pradeep, who has demanded for justice and actions against those named.
Pradeep is said to have invested about Rs 1.5 crore in an upcoming resort project involving Gopi, Somaiah and others near HSR Layout, a prominent suburb, and was promised a stake in it, but was later allegedly cheated, police said.
Limbavali is said to have tried to broker a compromise between them, and an agreement was reached a month ago to pay Pradeep his dues, but the latter did not receive all the money, they added.
Pradeep had gone to a resort in Nettigere along with his family on Saturday night to celebrate the New Year, police said.
He is said to have left the resort on Sunday morning, saying he needed to go to Sira, but had gone home instead, penned the death note and returned to the resort, they said, adding that in the evening he shot himself in the car.
Noting that in June/July of 2022, Pradeep had come to his office and shared his problem, Limbavali said: "Immediately based on the information and phone numbers he shared, I checked with them (Gopi, Somaiah and others) and asked them to do the settlement. They sought for time citing COVID, and as the issue was not resolved even after 15 days, Pradeep again came to me and I then asked them to resolve issues immediately, as he was in financial distress." "This much has been his involvement in the issue...subsequently at some event, on my asking, Pradeep said his issue was solved and thanked me," Limbavali told reporters, adding that he knew Gopi, Somaiah and others as they are owners of a banquet hall in the city where party events or meetings are usually held.
The MLA said Pradeep had again called him on his mobile phone in August regarding some family dispute and said his wife had filed a case against him in Bellandur police station.
"As it is a family dispute, I don't want to go into detail... I had called the police station and asked them to try to amicably solve the issue and help them reach a compromise, by involving both parties if the wife agrees, and accordingly they had reached a compromise," he said.
Highlighting that dealing with such cases is normal to all MLAs on a daily basis, Limbavali said it is unfortunate that this issue has gone to this extent.
"Pradeep himself has said in the death note that after my intervention, the parties had agreed to give him about Rs 90 lakh. He has mentioned my name for inquiry. I have done pro-people work," the MLA said.
"...this doesn't mean I will stop helping people in the time of need, I will continue to do my bit to help people. We will have to face certain things in public life," Limbavali further said, as he clarified that he did not do any mediation, but asked the parties involved to reach a settlement.

A bitter war of words has broken out between two senior Bharatiya Janata Party leaders holding top Constitutional posts. The Chief Minister of Karnataka and the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra are clashing over the border dispute between the two neighbouring states.
On 23 November 2022, Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis said that no Maharashtra village will go to Karnataka, and his government will also fight in the Supreme Court to get Marathi-speaking villages like Belgaum, Karwar, and Nipani.&nbsp;
In response, Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai said that Fadnavis had made a provocative statement on the issue, and his dream will never come true. Bommai added that while there is no question of giving up any of the state's territory, Karnataka does want Kannada-speaking areas of Maharashtra like Solapur and Akkalakot.
The border dispute has come to the fore as the Supreme Court is expected to hear the case soon. Maharashtra reportedly claims 865 villages near the border, while Karnataka claims 260 villages.

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Wednesday welcomed the Union government's decision to ban the Popular Front of India (PFI) for its alleged terror activities, and said the move sends a message to all "anti-national groups" that they will not survive in this country.
He said all that is necessary would be done to stop PFI's activities in the state.
"For a long time, it has been a demand by the people of this country, by all political parties including the opposition CPI, CPI(M) and the Congress. PFI is the avatar (incarnation) of SIMI (banned Students' Islamic Movement of India), and KFD (Karnataka Forum for Dignity). They were involved in anti-national activities and violence," Bommai said.
Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, he said they had their command outside the country and some of their important office-bearers had even gone across the border for the training.
The PFI was involved in all sorts of anti-social activities and time had come to ban this organisation, Bommai added.
"With a lot of background work, information, and cases, the Government of India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah has taken the right decision. This is the message for all anti-national groups that they will not survive in this country. I also urge people not to associate with such organisations," he added.
To a question that PFI was strong in coastal Karnataka and the task before the state government to remove them, the Chief Minister said, "Whatever necessary, will be done." In a notification issued late Tuesday night, the Union Home Ministry banned the PFI saying the central government is of the opinion that the Islamist outfit and its affiliates have been involved in subversive activities, thereby disturbing public order and undermining constitutional set up of the country and encouraging and enforcing a terror-based regressive regime.
It continues "propagating anti-national sentiments and radicalising a particular section of society" with the intention to create disaffection against the country, it said.
Welcoming the Centre's decision to ban PFI, Home Minister Araga Jnanendra said it is a right move for the country's unity and integrity, and to maintain peace and order.

The posters feature the likeness of chief minister Basavraj Bommai and a QR code. 
Upon scanning the QR code, the user is redirected to a website called ‘40 percent sarkar’. The portal was launched by opposition party last week for citizens to register their complaints against the government. 
The website ‘40 percent sarkar’ refers to the allegations of bribery levelled by the state contractors against BJP leaders and officials. The contractors in the past had claimed that 40 percent of the tender amount for state-funded projects is taken by BJP leaders and officials. 
Notably, similar posters with '40 percent CM' written on them were spotted in Hyderabad last week when Bommai was there to take part in the ‘Hyderabad Liberation day’ celebration organized by the union government.

In Hangal, Congress' Srinivas Mane won by a margin of 7,373 votes, securing 87,490 votes, while his closest rival Shivaraj Sajjanar of BJP bagged 80,117 votes.
JD(S)' Naziya Shakeel Ahmed Angadi from Sindgi and Niyaz Shaikh from Hangal came a distant third, by securing 4,353 and 927 votes respectively.
The bypolls for two seats was necessitated as they had fallen vacant, following the death of Sindgi JD(S) legislator M C Managuli and BJP's C M Udasi from Hangal.
The BJP losing Hangal is seen as a setback to Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, as it is the neighbouring constituency to his Shiggaon assembly segment in Haveri district, and that he had extensively campaigned there.

The move comes just a week after demolition of a temple at Nanjangud in Mysuru which drew criticism from within the ruling BJP and various other Hindu groups.
The statement of objects of the Bill stated, 'it is necessary to provide protection to religious constructions in public places constructed before the date of commencement of this Act. This is done in order to protect communal harmony and not to hurt the religious sentiments of the public.'
Interestingly, the bill also directs authorities not to allow any religious structure and its construction in public places in future.
