<p>Police across West Bengal are on high alert as local right-wing outfit Hindu Jagran Manch is holding over 5,000 processions on the occasion of Ram Navami on April 17.</p>
<p>The Hindu Jagaran Manch, affiliated to the RSS, is taking out processions in every district and at the ward and panchayat levels, while big processions will be taken out in Barasat, Siliguri and Kolkata&rsquo;s Ram Mandir in Burrabazar.</p>
<p>Bengal police told the Indian Express newspaper that anyone found violating law and order will be dealt with strictly. It comes days after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee warned that there could be violence during the festival.</p>
<p>Ram Navami celebrations have, of late, become contentious in Bengal, with the event often escalating into violence.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Report said that West Bengal police have received a complaint that NIA officials molested women when they investigate 2022 blast case in East Medinipur.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The West Bengal police have booked some National Investigation Agency officials for molestation after a team of the central agency investigating the 2022 blast in East Medinipur was attacked on April 6.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The police a First Information Report against the NIA officers under sections pertaining to molestation and trespassing. The Indian Express reported that the FIR has been filed based on the complaint of family members of the arrested accused and TMC worker Manabroto Jana.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The report said the police received a complaint that NIA officials molested women by breaking the doors of their houses late at night. Earlier the NIA had also filed a complaint claiming they were attacked as they went to arrest the accused.&nbsp;</p>

According to the probe team, the trio during interrogation revealed that they realised the victim's mother won't be able to pay ransom money and killed him instead. 

Teens kidnap friend for ransom to buy computer, kill him out of fear of being caught

<p>In a shocking incident, three teenage boys allegedly kidnapped their 14-year-old friend for ransom to buy a computer to play games. However, they strangled him to death after feeding him rasgulla and cold drinks due to fear of being caught, police said.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The incident took place in Krishnanagar's Ghurni area in West Bengal's Nadia district.</p>
<p>The body, tied in a sack, was recovered from a pond in the Hijuli area on the outskirts of Krishnanagar city on Saturday.</p>
<p>Police nabbed the trio and produced them before a juvenile court in Krishnanagar on Sunday. "The deceased, a resident of Ghurni and a class 8 student had gone missing on Friday afternoon while going to a nearby shop to buy some items. His mother received a ransom call of Rs 3 lakh on Saturday morning, following which she informed the Kotwali Police Station.</p>
<p>"We nabbed the trio, who are class 10 students of the same school the deceased studied in and are also local residents. They confessed to killing the boy and dumping his body in a pond," a police officer said, adding further investigation is underway to ascertain the motive behind the murder.</p>
<p>Police, however, suspect that the trio realised that the boy's mother may not be able to pay the ransom amount and killed him fearing they will be caught by the law enforcers if they released him.</p>
<p>The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, he said.</p>

<p>In 1977, playing for the star-studded New York Cosmos, Pele faced a spirited Mohun Bagan at the jam-packed Eden Gardens.</p>

<p>Much before Diego Maradona's 'Hand of God' moment stirred the football passion in Bengal, it was the Brazilian legend Pele who began the region's tryst with the 'beautiful game'.</p>
<p>Playing against Mohun Bagan at a jam-packed Eden Gardens in September 1977, the three-time World Cup winner was overwhelmed by the depth of talent the Indian club possessed.</p>
<p>Desperately seeking a revival after the dominance of arch-rivals East Bengal, Mohun Bagan not only stopped the 'King of Football' from scoring a goal but almost won 2-1 before a controversial penalty made it a 2-2 draw against the star-studded New York Cosmos.</p>
<p>But that wasn't the only visit Pele made to Kolkata.</p>
<p>In 2015, he was in the city during the Durga Puja festive period. Pele left even the former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly, a Brazil fan, mesmerised by his aura.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Trinamool Congress leader Rabindra Nath Ghosh ordered the shut down of two local biryani outlets in Bengal's Cooch Behar, claiming that spices in the delicacy were lowering male virility.&nbsp;</p>
<p>A former minister in the Mamata Banerjee government, Ghosh said that several people alleged that the ingredients used to cook biryani resulted in reduced sex drive among males.&nbsp;</p>
<p>"For the past several days there have been complaints from the people of the area that they don't know which spices are being used to make biryani that are deterrents to the sexual drive of a man," Ghosh said.</p>
<p>Ghosh who currently serves as the chairman of Cooch Behar municipality added that people from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh are operating shops in the area without a valid license.&nbsp;</p>
<p>"After all the complaints, we came here and found that the shops did not have a trade license. So the shops were closed," he said.</p>

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested TMC MLA Manik Bhattacharya in the early hours of Tuesday after night-long questioning in connection with the irregularities in the recruitment of primary teachers, officials said.
Bhattacharya, the former chairman of the West Bengal Board of Primary Education, was arrested for allegedly not cooperating with the investigation, they said.
"Mr Bhattacharya has been arrested for his continued non-cooperating with the investigators during questioning, which began on Monday afternoon. He also tried to misdirect the investigators," an ED officer told PTI.
He is the MLA of Palashipara in Nadia district.
Earlier, the Supreme Court granted Bhattacharya "protection" from being arrested by the CBI, which is also investigating the case.
The ED is tracking the money trail in the scam, while the CBI is looking into the alleged irregularities committed in the recruitment.
It is alleged that several people who fared poorly in the recruitment examinations were hired as teachers in exchange for lakhs of rupees, while the eligible candidates were overlooked.
In July, the ED arrested former West Bengal education minister Partha Chatterjee in the School Service Commission (SSC) recruitment scam.

 Stones were hurled allegedly at the vehicle of BJP's Lok Sabha bypoll candidate Agnimitra Paul on Tuesday morning, leading to tensions in Asansol.
Around 10 per cent turnout was recorded till 9 am in the Asansol Lok Sabha constituency and Ballygunge assembly segment where by-elections were underway, the Election Commission said.
Stones were hurled when security personnel baton-charged a group of TMC supporters who gheraoed Paul's vehicle, alleging that she tried to enter a polling booth along with her guards.
"My polling agent was not allowed to enter a booth in Barabani. My vehicle was also attacked and the police were mute spectators," Paul alleged.
The TMC alleged that it was Paul and her security personnel who tried to create disturbance in the area.
"How can a candidate move with a convoy of 20 cars? She and her security personnel were trying to create tension in the area," a TMC leader said.
The Election Commission said that it has received a complaint regarding the incident.
"We will look into it," an official said.
The Election Commission said 12.77 per cent turnout was recorded in Asansol in Paschim Bardhaman, while Ballygunge in south Kolkata recorded 8 per cent turnout during the first two hours of polling.
The by-elections were necessitated as Babul Supriyo resigned as the MP of Asansol after switching over to the TMC from the BJP, while state minister Subrata Mukherjee, who represented Ballygunge, died last year.

<p>Around 10 per cent turnout was recorded till 9 am in the Asansol Lok Sabha constituency and Ballygunge assembly segment where by-elections were underway, the Election Commission said.</p>
<p>Stones were hurled when security personnel baton-charged a group of TMC supporters who gheraoed Paul's vehicle, alleging that she tried to enter a polling booth along with her guards.</p>
<p>"My polling agent was not allowed to enter a booth in Barabani. My vehicle was also attacked and the police were mute spectators," Paul alleged.</p>
<p>The TMC alleged that it was Paul and her security personnel who tried to create disturbance in the area.</p>
<p>"How can a candidate move with a convoy of 20 cars? She and her security personnel were trying to create tension in the area," a TMC leader said.</p>
<p>The Election Commission said that it has received a complaint regarding the incident.</p>
<p>"We will look into it," an official said.</p>
<p>The Election Commission said 12.77 per cent turnout was recorded in Asansol in Paschim Bardhaman, while Ballygunge in south Kolkata recorded 8 per cent turnout during the first two hours of polling.</p>
<p>The by-elections were necessitated as Babul Supriyo resigned as the MP of Asansol after switching over to the TMC from the BJP, while state minister Subrata Mukherjee, who represented Ballygunge, died last year.</p>

The prime accused, Brajagopal, who was first detained and then arrested, has been slapped with POCSO charges, apart from rape, murder and suppression of evidence. Police said his family is absconding.
Stating that there should be no politics over the case, Bengal’s Minister of Women and Child Development, Sashi Panja, said the ruling party has zero tolerance for abuse of minors and women and justice will prevail.

At least 10 persons died in the early hours of Tuesday after their houses caught fire at Rampurhat in Birbhum district, police said.
The incident took place within an hour after the alleged murder of a Trinamool Congress panchayat leader on Monday, DGP Manoj Malaviya told reporters in Kolkata.
Malaviya said seven charred bodies were recovered from one of the burnt houses, while one injured person died in hospital.
&ldquo;The situation is now under control and a police picket has been established in the village since last night. We are investigating how the houses caught fire and whether the incident is related to the death of the panchayat deputy chief of Barshal village,&rdquo; he said.
Asked about claims by some fire brigade officials that 10 bodies were found, the top police officer clarified while seven of them were recovered after the blaze was brought under control, three injured persons were rescued of whom one died in a hospital.
The SDPO and in-charge of Rampurhat police station have been removed from active policing duty, the DGP said.
The state government has set up a special investigation team headed by ADG (CID) Gyanwant Singh, Malaviya said.
The ruling TMC has also sent a three-member MLA team led by minister Firhad Hakim to the spot to take stock of the situation.
The body of Bhadu Sheikh, the TMC panchayat deputy chief of Barshal village, was found in the area on Monday, police had said.
