A "rare" case of mucormycosis has been reported in a 49-year-old male patient at Apollo Hospital in Delhi post his recovery from dengue, doctors said on Saturday.
The patient had come to the hospital, complaining about a sudden loss of vision in one eye, 15 days after his recovery from the vector-borne disease, according to the hospital's statement.&nbsp;
Mucormycosis post dengue is a new observation and hence, patients with a recent history of dengue should remain actively updated about their health and consult a healthcare expert immediately after noticing any new symptoms, doctors at the Apollo hospital said.
The case comes amid a huge spike in the number of dengue cases in the national capital.
According to a civic report on vector-borne diseases released on Monday, nine deaths and a total of 2,708&nbsp;dengue&nbsp;cases&nbsp;have been recorded this season till November 6, which is the highest count since 2017 for the same period.

To provide relief to thousands of people amid the second wave of&nbsp;coronavirus&nbsp;pandemic, Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday waived tax on Covid-19 essential items including medicines and equipment. The decision was taken in 44th&nbsp;Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council meet on&nbsp;June 12. The states have earlier urged the Union government to consider tax relief on Covid-19 essential items.She said that the council has cut tax for Black Fungus medicine to nil. These include Tocilizumbab, Amphotericin B medicines. GST rates on the specified items being used in Covid-19 relief and management till 30th September 2021.She also said that GST on ambulances will be reduced to 12% from 28%. However, Sitharam added that 5% GST on vaccines will stay. The Centre will buy the 75% vaccine as announced and will pay its GST too. But 70% of income from GST will be shared with States.&nbsp;

There are reportedly 30 cases of mucormycosis or black fungus among serving soldiers and military veterans at Delhi's two premier defence hospitals, the Army R&amp;R and Army Base Hospital. The hospitals are struggling without adequate supplies of the life-saving drug Amphotericin B. According to a report by India Today, the two hospitals have less than half of the amount required to treat the patients at hand.
An Army doctor at the Research &amp; Referral hospital said that "many lives, including those of serving frontline soldiers, are at risk since the hospital is still awaiting the bare minimum consignment to fight increasing black fungus cases.&rsquo;
A senior Ministry of Defence officer said the government had been apprised of the shortage, and that efforts were being made to meet the Amphotericin B requirement on priority.

A 59-year-old COVID-19 patient, who was also detected with black, white and yellow fungus, has passed away here, the doctor treating him said on Saturday.
"Kunwar Singh was under treatment but passed away due to toxemia (blood poisoning by toxins) at 7.30 pm on Friday," Dr. B P Tyagi, an ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat) specialist at Harsh Hospital in the city's Raj Nagar area, told PTI.&nbsp; The doctor said Singh, a lawyer from Sanjay Nagar in the city, had approached him recently with Covid conditions.
"The yellow fungus, besides white and black fungus, was detected during endoscopy on May 24," Tyagi added.&nbsp; Meanwhile, he said his hospital is treating another 59-year-old man from Muradnagar who has also been detected with yellow fungus infections.&nbsp; "The fungus in Rajesh Kumar, a resident of Muradnagar, was detected near his brain. Half of his jaw has been removed," he said.&nbsp; He too has toxemia but the level of infection is lesser than what Kunwar Singh had, the doctor said, adding the patient is on anti-fungal medication.
Ghaziabad, adjoining Delhi, in western Uttar Pradesh has recorded 432 deaths linked to Covid-19 so far and 1,957 active cases of coronavirus, according to official figures updated till Friday.

Maharashtra filed a global tender for Amphorectin B to meet the demand in the state.&nbsp;Chandigarh alone ordered 2,000 vials of Liposomal Amphotericin B injection with Mylan company for a supply costing about ₹1.2 crores.
Drastic steps are required to bridge the gap between the demand and supply of Amphotericin B, the primary drug used for treating black fungus. The current production and supply and the projections of the same may fall well short of the requirement of the medicine to treat the patients all over the nation.

A patient is administered around 6 injections in a day. On average, one patient requires 100 vials. With over 11,000 patients, India requires over 11 lakh. The number of cases are also expected to rise significantly.
Currently, there are only 5 manufacturers of this drug in the country- Bharat Serums &amp; Vaccines, BDR Pharmaceuticals, Sun Pharma, Cipla, and Life Care Innovations. Mylan imports the drug and supplies.
Like in the case of Remdesivir, the Centre has taken over the supply and distribution of Amphotericin B to states, and the state is distributing the injections on the basis of criticality and seriousness.
The centre has given license to 5 more manufacturers to start production of the drug.

The expected supply of the drug in May is 1.36 lakh vials, in June it would be 2.55 lakh vials. Besides the domestic production, there is an import order of 7.05 lakh vials and the government is trying to find out other avenues.
There&rsquo;s also a shortage of two raw materials that is hindering the proaction capacity. The first is active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) Amphoterecin B. It is required for both liposomal form and plain form. The second is purified synthetic lipids. It is in demand globally for manufacturing of mRNA vaccines. There is only 1 lipid supplier in India.
The production of Amphoterecin B takes around 21 days besides the time taken for sterility test. Even with all the ramped up production, the domestic supply will not be enough to meet the demand. India is likely to remain dependent on imports.

Maharashtra filed a global tender for Amphorectin B to meet the demand in the state.&nbsp;Chandigarh alone ordered 2,000 vials of Liposomal Amphotericin B injection with Mylan company for a supply costing about ₹1.2 crores.
Drastic steps are required to bridge the gap between the demand and supply of Amphotericin B, the primary drug used for treating black fungus. The current production and supply and the projections of the same may fall well short of the requirement of the medicine to treat the patients all over the nation.

The Delhi Epidemic Diseases Regulations, 2021, which will be valid for a year from the date of publication, states that all healthcare facilities, government or private, will report each and every suspected or confirmed cases of black fungus in the national capital to the city health department.

Rise in black fungus cases: Sonia writes to PM Modi, wants ‘immediate action’

As cases of&nbsp;Mucormycosis&nbsp;or 'black fungus' rise across the country, Congress president&nbsp;Sonia Gandhi&nbsp;on Saturday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take immediate action on the supply of an essential drug to treat the fungal infection being detected in&nbsp;Covid-19&nbsp;patients.
She wrote in the letter that there are reports of its acute scarcity of medicine and Prime Minister Modi&nbsp;must&nbsp;take immediate action.&nbsp;
She also requested the Centre to be ready with an adequate production and assured supply of essential medicines to treat the disease, as well as provide cost free patient care for those requiring treatment.

All India Institute of Medical Sciences Director&nbsp;Dr Randeep&nbsp;Guleria&nbsp;has listed warning signs of Black Fungus in recovering Covid-19 patients.&nbsp;He said if a Covid-19 patient who is recovering can't get rid of that persistent headache or swelling on one side of the face&nbsp;the patient must&nbsp;immediately speak to a doctor and get tested for Black Fungus.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Listing other symptoms, the top doctor said Covid-19 patients must also consult doctors&nbsp;if&nbsp;they&nbsp;find&nbsp;discolouration&nbsp;in the mouth and decreased sensation in any part of the face.&nbsp;&nbsp;Listing out more symptoms, Dr&nbsp;Guleria&nbsp;said&nbsp;if the patient&rsquo;s&nbsp;nose is getting blocked and there is thrusting, or&nbsp;if there is loosening of a tooth&nbsp;those are the warning signs of Black Fungus&nbsp;or&nbsp;myucormycosis.&nbsp;An X-ray or a CT scan of the sinuses is done to see if there is infection. A second option, he said, was to do a biopsy through a nasal endoscopy.&nbsp;&nbsp;

After a detailed review of the rising number of mucormycosis&nbsp;cases, a total of 23,680 additional vials of Amphotericin&nbsp;B have been allocated to states and UTs, Gowda&nbsp;tweeted. The allocation has been made based on the total number of cases which is approximately 8,848 across the country, he added. He also shared an image revealing the break up of the vials allocated to different states.&nbsp;Gujrat&nbsp;which has&nbsp;2200 cases, the maximum number of cases will be given 5800 vials. The symptoms of white fungus are reportedly very similar to Covid-19 in the lungs but such patients test negative for the virus. CT scans and X-rays are useful in diagnosing the infection, said&nbsp;Dr SN Singh, the head of microbiology,&nbsp;PMCH&nbsp;in a Zee&nbsp;News report.
The infection seems to be caused by unsanitary use of oxygen cylinders, overuse of steroids and using tap water in the humidifier attached to an oxygen cylinder.
As of now, people with weakened immunity, a common trait among&nbsp;Covid-19 patients or those who have recovered from it, are allegedly the most susceptible to this infection.&nbsp;
