Two people were killed and one sustained serious injuries after they were run over by a car that was reportedly part of the convoy of BJP candidate Karan Bhushan Singh, who is the son of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
The accident took place on Thursday morning near Baikunth Degree College on Colonelganj-Huzoorpur road in Uttar Pradesh's Gonda district. The police have seized the car and filed an FIR against the driver of the car whose identity has not been revealed..
However, it is not confirmed whether Karan Bhushan Singh was present in the car at the time of the accident.&nbsp;
Kernalganj SHO Nirbhay Narayan Singh told PTI news agency that Rehan Khan (17) and Shehzad Khan (20) who were riding on a motorcycle were hit by the vehicle near a school. Both died on the spot.
The injured, who is said to be a woman, has been admitted to hospital and police personnel have been deployed in the area to ensure law and order.
The SUV that hit the duo lost control and also hit Sita Devi (60) who was walking on the road side, the SHO said.&nbsp;

Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, a prominent politician, appeared before Delhi's Rouse Avenue Court on Tuesday afternoon. Days after former Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh was charged with sexual harassment, one of the key members of the wrestlers' protest, Vinesh Phogat has spoken up about the Delhi court's decision.&nbsp; In a special feature for the Indian Express, Phogat detailed how framing of the charges is a win for them but their battle will continue in the court.&nbsp; The Indian Express report, dated May 12, 2024, began with the wrestler asserting that following the court's move, they as wrestlers can stand tall without fear and their head held high, look Brij Bhushan in the eye, the man they feared for so many years.&nbsp; She continued, 'The framing of charges also sends a strong message that women can take on powerful men and they don&rsquo;t have to be afraid.'&nbsp; The charges were ordered to be filed against the BJP MP after a long fight that began with a protest in January 2023 at Delhi's Jantar Mantar.&nbsp; Talking about their 18-month long struggle, Phogat wrote, 'We were worried about him using his powerful connections to put pressure on the system but our lawyer had told us not to worry. The BJP has given his son a ticket for the Lok Sabha elections. That shows that they still support Brij Bhushan.'&nbsp; The 2-time World Championship medallist went on to add, 'I can say that the day Brij Bhushan does not have the backing of the government at the Centre and loses power, there will be many more girls who will come forward and complain about him.'&nbsp; Brij Bhushan, currently a BJP MP representing the Kaiserganj seat in Uttar Pradesh, is not contesting the 2024 general elections. His son Karan Bhushan Singh has been fielded by the party, instead, from the same constituency.&nbsp; Shedding light on speculations surrounding their protest and the reasons behind it, Phogat said, 'Some people believe we have been propped up because of politics. We can&rsquo;t go and tell everyone that we have no agenda other than getting justice for women wrestlers, that we are not playing politics. '&nbsp;
In 2023, the protesting wrestlers garnered nationwide support, including from farmers' unions, and were detained by the Delhi Police in May that year. &nbsp;
Following that they issued an ultimatum to throw their medals into the Ganga river citing lack of action. Eventually, a chargesheet was filed against Brij Bhushan on June 15, 2023.&nbsp;
But the battle was far from over.&nbsp;
It took them nearly a year, including an absence from important sporting competitions and Sakshi Malik's retirement in protest, before the charges were levied. Delhi Rouse Avenue Court ordered framing of charges against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh under IPC section 354 and 354A that pertain to outraging woman's modesty and sexual harassment respectively, in the case of 5 women wrestlers. Singh will also be charged with criminal intimidation under IPC 506(1) in the case of two wrestlers when charges are officially filed on May 21, 2024.&nbsp; The former WFI chief, however, was acquitted of allegations levelled by a sixth woman wrestler.&nbsp;

The official press note by Punia also asserted the wrestlers' faith in the legal system, 'We have full faith In the judiciary and look forward to a fair trial and Justice being meted out to us.'&nbsp; Fellow Olympic medallist Sakshi Malik also expressed her feelings about the development on X, 'The daughters of the country have had to go through such difficult times, but this decision will provide relief. Satyamev Jayate.'&nbsp; Malik had announced her decision to retire in December 2023, hours after Brij Bhushan's aide Sanjay Singh was elected as the WFI President.&nbsp; She added, 'We thank the honorable court. We had to sleep on the streets for many nights in the heat and rain, had to give up on our stable careers, only then have we been able to take a few steps forward in the fight for justice.'&nbsp;

Following months of protests, the Delhi Police had filed a charge sheet in the case against Singh on June 15 under sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 354A (sexual harassment), 354D (stalking) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.

Additionally, with respect to 2 of the wrestlers, the court revealed that it found evidence on record to charge Singh for offences under Section 506 Part 1 (criminal intimidation) of IPC.&nbsp;
Singh, however, was discharged from allegation levelled by the sixth wrestler.&nbsp;
Former assistant secretary Vinod Tomar, who was the second accused in the case, was charged under Section 506 Part 1 of the IPC with respect to only one wrestler and stands discharged from all other offences, the court said.&nbsp;
Last month, the former Wrestling Federation chief had sought further probe into the case while also asking to make more submissions on framing of charges. Singh claimed that he was not in India on the date one of the alleged incidents took place.&nbsp;
His appeals were dismissed by the judge.&nbsp;
Singh has been accused of sexual harassment by female wrestlers, who allege that the incidents occurred between 2016 to 2019. The multiple instances reportedly took place at the WFI office in Delhi, Singh's official residence as well as outside the country.&nbsp;

A Delhi court is likely to pronounce on April 26 its order on whether to frame charges against former Wrestling Federation of India chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh in a sexual harassment case lodged by six female wrestlers against him.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Priyanka Rajpoot, who was scheduled to pass order on Thursday, deferred the matter after Singh moved an application before the court seeking further probe in the matter.
In his application, Singh sought time for making further submissions on charges and for further investigation, saying he was not in India on the date of one of the incidents, where a complainant has alleged that she was harassed at the WFI office. Singh's counsel claimed that the Delhi Police had relied upon the call detail records (CDR) of the coach who had accompanied the complainant and stated that they had gone to WFI on September 7, 2022, where she was allegedly molested.
However, the CDR has not been placed on record by the police, the counsel claimed.
The counsel further claimed that Singh was not in the country on the date when the offence is alleged.
"I (Singh) am seeking direction to Delhi Police to investigate the issue. The dates on which the offence is alleged are not clear. This has a bearing at the stage of charge. If I am not there when the offence is being alleged against me, my plea of alibi will come in", the counsel argued.
The public prosecutor opposed the application, stating that it was "merely a delay tactic being used by the defence." The judge reserved order on the issued and posted the matter for April 26.
The city police had filed a charge sheet in the case against Singh, a six-time MP, on June 15 under sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 354A (sexual harassment), 354D (stalking) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC.
The police had also charged Vinod Tomar, the suspended assistant secretary of the WFI, in the case.&nbsp;

Confident of his loyalist Sanjay Singh's victory in the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) elections on Thursday, outgoing president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh urged the new office bearers to create a "conducive sports environment and compensate for any losses".

Confident of his loyalist Sanjay Singh's victory in the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) elections on Thursday, outgoing president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh urged the new office bearers to create a "conducive sports environment and compensate for any losses".
UP Wrestling Association vice-president Sanjay Singh, who is a close associate of Brij Bhushan, is up against Commonwealth Games gold medallist Anita Sheoran for the post of president in the much-delayed WFI elections, that are underway.
"11 months later, today is the election. In the election, Sanjay Singh, in a way, can be described as a representative of the old federation," Brij Bhushan told PTI.
"Sanjay Singh is sure to win the election, ensuring the formation of a new federation for the children. I urge them to create a conducive sports environment as soon as possible and compensate for any losses," he added.
Sanjay was part of WFI&rsquo;s last executive council. He was also the national federation&rsquo;s joint secretary since 2019.
Sheoran, on the other hand, is backed by the country's top wrestlers, who had accused Brij Bhushan of sexually exploiting women grapplers during his tenure.
The elite wrestlers, including Olympic medallists Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik and World Championships medallist Vinesh Phogat, had spearheaded the agitation at Jantar Mantar against Brij Bhushan.
They had demanded that none of Brij Bhushan's family members or associates should be allowed to contest the elections.
Consequently, neither Brij Bhushan's son Prateek nor son-in-law Vishal Singh entered the fray.
"As suggested I should not involve my family in the election. That's why I did not nominate anyone from my family in the election," Brij Bhushan said.
Sanjay said his entire panel will win the elections.
"I am confident that we will win. We have the votes of 41 state units with us. Our entire panel will emerge victorious," he said.
Asked about the scheduled press conference to be addressed by the country's top wrestlers, including Vinesh, later in the day, Sanjay said, "The Supreme Court has given the go-ahead for WFI elections.
"This is a democratic country and people are free to contest elections. People are free to air views." Besides the post of the president, elections are also being held for senior vice-president (1), vice-presidents (4), secretary-general (1), treasurer (1), joint secretaries (2), executive members (5).
The election process, which was set in motion in July, had been delayed because of court cases, which had led to the suspension of WFI by the international federation, United World Wrestling, for failing to conduct fresh polls on time.
The Supreme Court recently set aside the stay imposed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, paving the way for the process of electing the new WFI governing body.
The results will be declared on Thursday itself.

Former WFI chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, accused of sexual harassment of several women wrestlers, was not exonerated by the oversight committee constituted by the government to investigate the allegations against him, Delhi police told a city court on Saturday.
The police made the submission before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Harjeet Singh Jaspal during the argument on whether to frame charges against Singh in the case.
&ldquo;Singh was not exonerated by the oversight committee. The committee had given the recommendations, not the decision&hellip; Nowhere has it stated that these allegations are not substantiated or are false,&rdquo; special public prosecutor Atul Srivastava told the court.
He urged the court to frame the charges against Singh, saying even a mere gesture can constitute a crime under section 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the Indian Penal Code.
The Delhi police had filed a charge sheet against the six-time MP on June 15 under sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 354A (sexual harassment), 354D (stalking) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). &nbsp; Singh appeared before the court during the proceedings of the case on Saturday.
Delhi police will resume its arguments on September 23 on the charges against Singh. &nbsp;The Union Sports Ministry had constituted an oversight committee headed by Indian boxing great M C Mary Kom to investigate the allegations levelled by women wrestlers against Singh after their protest in the national capital.
Its report was not made public but a copy was given to the Delhi police who are probing the allegations against Singh.
The court had on July 20 granted bail to Singh and suspended Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) assistant secretary Vinod Tomar. They were never arrested in the case.&nbsp;

Outgoing WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, currently fighting sexual harassment charges levelled by women wrestlers, and celebrated grappler Vinesh Phogat on Saturday blamed each other for the national federation's suspension by UWW on account of not holding elections within 45 days.
The WFI elections were supposed to be held on August 12 but the Punjab and Haryana High Court stayed the polls, acting on a petition filed by Haryana Wrestling Association (HWA).
On Thursday, United World Wrestling (UWW) suspended WFI as a result of which Indian grapplers won't be able to compete at next month's World Championship under national flag.
It was on Friday that double world championship medallist Vinesh, who spearheaded a sit-on protest at Jantar Mantar for more than one month demanding Brij Bhushan's arrest, took to 'X', formerly Twitter, to accuse the outgoing WFI chief for bringing ignominy to the national federation. She also called him a "mafia".
"If one makes correct assessment of the loss of reputation of the WFI due to Bri Bhushan, he will be completely exposed. The national tri-colour hs been shamed by a mafia," Vinesh wrote on her social media page.
On Saturday, Brij Bhushan, the BJP MP from UP's Kaisarganj, hurled counter-accusations on Vinesh and her fellow protesters Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia for the suspension of WFI.
"These 'dharnaa jeevi' (protesting) players are responsible for WFI suspension. They are the ones who made a fun of wrestling and wrestlers of the country," he said during a media conference at his hometown.
"Today, the situation is very sad, as for the first time, India has been banned by the UWW since elections could not be conducted. If this problem is not resolved at the earliest, then there will be major loss for India. No wrestler under the banner of India could contest in the Olympics and World Championship," he said.
Brij Bhushan also accused Haryana federation for trying to put a spanner on the election procedure.
"Get the voting done in Haryana today itself, and then see who supports whom. I had tried to hold the elections in January, but do you know what all allegations were levelled at me? "After this, the government told me to stay away from wrestling for some days. Again after this, for four times, I tried to conduct the elections, but every time, there was some obstruction or the other," he said.
Brij Bhushan said that the UWW had given a categorical warning that if elections were not held within 45 days, India's membership would be cancelled, and eventually this happened.
He also said that he and his son Karan Singh had stepped aside and no one from his family is contesting the elections.
"All of you know that from UP, I and my son Karan Singh are voters. But, on the demand of the players, I and my son remained out of the election process but even then, the elections could not be held. The results are before the country," he said.
"On being asked by the sports ministry, I have distanced myself from wrestling. Now, neither I nor any member of my family is a part of this (sports). Now, they are demanding that I should leave the citizenship of India, but this is not possible for me." After Brij Bhushan's press conference, Vinesh once again took to the micro-blogging site 'X' to launch a second salvo at her bete noire.
"Brij Bhushan is still controlling the federation and he won't let anyone form an elected body without his interference. The man who has sexually harassed women wrestlers wants control of federation simply because if any credible person takes over as WFI chief instead of his stooges, then all his misdeeds will be exposed.

Delhi police on Friday told a metropolitan court there was enough evidence to put outgoing Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on trial in a case of alleged sexual harassment of women wrestlers.
The city police told Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Harjeet Singh Jaspal that a &ldquo;prime facie&rdquo; case was made out against Singh and co-accused and suspended WFI assistant secretary Vinod Tomar.
&ldquo;Accused persons must be charged for the offences for which they have been charge-sheeted,&rdquo; public prosecutor Atul Srivastava, representing police, told the court.
He told the court there was enough evidence to frame charges, including under 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 354-A (sexual harassment) and 354-D (stalking) of IPC, against Singh.
The court will now hear the matter on August 19, when the advocate for the complainants is likely to make arguments on the point of charge.
The metropolitan court had on July 20 granted bail to Singh and Tomar on a bond of Rs 25,000 each with certain conditions, including they shall not leave the country without the court's prior permission and not offer any inducement to witnesses.
The Delhi police had filed a charge sheet against the six-time MP on June 15.&nbsp;

Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the former President of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), made an announcement on Monday stating that none of his family members will be participating in the upcoming elections of the national sports body. He also reiterated that his group has the backing of 22 state associations.
Brij Bhushan, who is also a BJP MP, asserted that 22 out of 25 state units attended a meeting he hosted on Sunday, during which he declared that "his candidates" for various positions in the federation elections, scheduled for August 12, will be revealed soon.
On the last day of nomination for the WFI elections, Brij Bhushan visited the Indian Olympic Association office and stated, "Today is the last day of nominations, members from 22 state associations were here and they came to meet and are now going for filing their nominations. There is no one from my family."
He further added, "Let the elections happen first and then whoever wins will do their work." However, due to having completed 12 years as the head of the federation, Brij Bhushan is ineligible to contest as per the National Sports Code.
Responding to allegations of sexual harassment leveled against Brij Bhushan by the country's top wrestlers, including Olympic medalists Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, and Asian Games gold medalist Vinesh Phogat, the Sports Minister Anurag Thakur had assured the protesting athletes that no one from the BJP leader's family would participate in the elections.
Consequently, Brij Bhushan's son Karan is not part of the electoral college, and son-in-law Vishal Singh (President, Bihar Wrestling Federation), who was being considered as his potential successor, will also not contest for any top position in the August 12 elections.
Brij Bhushan's candidates may face competition from rivals who reportedly held a separate meeting at a different location in the national capital, with the state units of Assam, Odisha, and Himachal Pradesh in attendance.

Singh, popularly known as Bahubali in Uttar Pradesh is currently embroiled in a sexual harassment case filed by multiple top wrestlers. The 6-time MP called the shots for over a decade as the president of the federation which is currently being managed by an ad-hoc panel set up by the Indian Olympic Association. &nbsp;
The panel exempted Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia from the trials for the upcoming Asian Games in China. The decision snowballed into a huge controversy with Singh harshly criticising the wrestlers who protested against him. He said, &ldquo;the reasons behind all this (protest) are becoming crystal clear&rdquo;
The 3-time chief of the wrestling body is now finding faults with the decisions of the ad-hoc panel but he had himself given multiple arbitrary exemptions to the <a href="https://www.editorji.com/sports-news/others-sports/explained-why-vinesh-phogat-and-bajrang-punia-s-trial-exemptions-cannot-be-challenged-asian-games-2023-1690594804554">&ldquo;iconic wrestlers&rdquo; in the past.</a>
And apparently, it did not &ldquo;hurt the sport of wrestling in this country" then. &nbsp;
The 6-time Member of Parliament exempted Bajrang Punia, Deepak Punia, Naveen Malik and Ravi Dahiya when the wrestling body picked the team for the World Championships in 2022. &nbsp;
Such exemptions are well within the federation&rsquo;s Selection Trial Regulation.
The rule says, &ldquo;The Selection Trials in all weight categories are mandatory, however, the Selection Committee will have the discretion to select the iconic players after suggestions from Chief Coach/Foreign Expert.&rdquo; &nbsp;
The regulations define &ldquo;iconic players&rdquo; as &ldquo;Olympic/ World Championship medal winners and last Asian Games Gold Medal winners&rdquo;
The rules also give veto power to the head of the selection committee which is the WFI chief. Therefore, the four wrestlers - Bajrang, Deepak, Naveen and Ravi got the exemption while Singh was at the helm of WFI.

While Bajrang and Ravi met the criteria as they had won medals in the 2020 Olympics, Naveen and Deepak Punia were allowed to skip the trials for the Worlds due to Singh&rsquo;s veto power.
Interestingly, Vinesh Phogat, who is one of the most prominent faces of the wrestlers&rsquo; protest against Singh had returned from Birmingham 2022 with Gold but was forced to appear for the Worlds trials.
After winning Bronze in Belgrade, where the 2022 edition of the Worlds was held, Vinesh had said that she came third because of the trials and that she would have won gold otherwise. The federation even gave an exemption to Olympic silver medalist Sushil Kumar who made his return to Asian Games after 12 years for the 2018 event. The WFI assistant secretary Vinod Tomar who is a co-accused in the sexual misconduct case had justified Sushil&rsquo;s exemption then, by saying that it will disturb the wrestler's momentum.&nbsp; Six grapplers - Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, Sangeeta Phogat, Bajrang Punia, Satyawart Kadian and Jitendra Kinha - had sought an extension of the deadline for the 2023 Asian Game trials which were scheduled to end on July 23.
While the deadline which originally was July 15 was extended by a week, IOA panel had also ruled that the protesting wrestlers would need to go through a one-bout trial and face the winner of the trial of their respective weight category. &nbsp;
After harsh criticism, the panel decided to dump the idea and opted to grant exemptions to 2 wrestlers &ndash; Vinesh and Bajrang.
Rio bronze medallist Sakshi on the other hand made it clear that she is against exemptions and turned down an offer of direct qualification for the Asian Games on account of being an Olympic medallist.
She said, "I was also told to e-mail that my name would be considered too. But I have refused, I do not want to go without the trials."
In 2022, the 30-year-old was asked by the federation to take the trials for the Worlds even after she won gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. She, however, later refused to participate in the trial and pulled out of the event.
As per the Asian Games rules mentioned in the Selection Regulation, Vinesh and Bajrang qualify for an exemption because both won bronze last at the Worlds.
Olympic medalist Yogeshwar Dutt, who retired in 2018, also called the decision &ldquo;biased&rdquo; and questioned the omission of Ravi Dahiya, who checked all the boxes for direct entry, but the Olympic silver medalist may have axed his own foot. &nbsp;
Dahiya, as per reports, was exempted but the 25-year-old, who had just recovered from a knee ligament injury, chose to participate in the trial only to falter against an unheralded Atish Todkar.&nbsp;
A legal challenge to Punia and Phogat&rsquo;s exemption came from Antim Panghal. The heartbroken wrestler, who is now a standby in the same category as Vinesh, filed a plea in Delhi High Court questioning the grounds on which Phogat had been given an exemption. Her plea was dismissed.&nbsp;
But Bajrang answered Panghal&rsquo;s question in Facebook live - &nbsp;&ldquo;Antim, you said you became the first Indian to win U-20 championship but Vinesh is also the only woman wrestler to have won two World Championship medals. You filed a court case against us?&rdquo;&nbsp;

Former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, has organized a meeting on Sunday to nominate his panel for contesting the upcoming WFI elections.
Although Brij Bhushan and his son Karan won't be part of the electoral college for the elections, Vishal Singh, Brij Bhushan's son-in-law representing Bihar, may potentially compete for a prominent position.
Vinod Tomar, the outgoing WFI assistant secretary, who is the co-accused in the sexual harassment case alongside Brij Bhushan, confirmed the scheduled meeting on July 30, while the exact venue is yet to be determined.
"The outgoing president has convened a meeting on Sunday. The venue for the meeting has not been decided as yet," stated Tomar, adding that state association presidents and secretaries are likely to attend the meeting to discuss candidates for the elections.
The news, however, will surely come as a shock to the wrestlers, who were given an assurance by Sports Minister Anurag Thakur that neither Brij Bhushan's family members nor his associates will be allowed to contest the WFI elections.
Nominations for the August 12 elections must be filed by July 31.
As Brij Bhushan has already served the maximum term of 12 years as an office-bearer, he is not eligible to contest the elections based on the National Sports Code.
Currently, the day-to-day operations of WFI are overseen by the Indian Olympic Association-constituted ad-hoc committee led by Bhupender Singh Bajwa.
Ranbir Kundu, the secretary of the Punjab Wrestling Association, revealed that they had not yet received any invitation from any candidate or party to attend their meeting. He stated that they do not plan to field any candidate for the top positions but will vote for the betterment of wrestling in the country.
Two representatives from each state unit will be allowed to vote in the elections. However, Maharashtra and Tripura will have no representatives as their claims were deemed "ineligible" by the Returning Officer, and Tripura has remained disaffiliated since 2016.
The WFI elections have faced multiple postponements. Initially scheduled for July 6 by the IOA ad-hoc panel, it was rescheduled to July 11 after disaffiliated state bodies from Maharashtra, Haryana, Telangana, Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh sought a hearing. However, the elections couldn't proceed on July 11 due to a stay order from the Gauhati High Court, following the Assam Wrestling Association's plea to participate in the process. The Supreme Court subsequently allowed the elections to proceed by staying the Gauhati High Court's order.
Scrutiny of the nominations will be conducted on August 2, and the final list of candidates will be published on August 7. Voting will take place on August 12.

The decision to exempt Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat from the Asian Games trials is "unfortunate" and will hurt wrestling in India, former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who is facing sexual harassment charges by women grapplers, said on Wednesday.
IOA's ad-hoc panel on Tuesday handed direct Asian Games entries to Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat, who were at the forefront of protest against Singh.
The junior wrestlers, especially the most-affected Antim Panghal and Sujeet Kalkal, have also slammed the panel and dragged it to the court, demanding a fair trial in all categories.
Singh, who is also a BJP MP, said they had ended the practice of giving exemptions to wrestlers because they realised that it was hurting the juniors. "I am pretty anguished since the ad-hoc panel took this decision. It will hurt the sport of wrestling in this country. A lot of people have worked hard to lift this sport. The athletes, their parents, the fans of the sport, all have worked hard," Singh told PTI in an exclusive interaction.
"Today, wrestling is one sport where Olympic medal is considered guaranteed. And the decision that these wrestlers will go to a competition like Asian Games, is an unfortunate one." Singh, who is out on interim bail and not eligible to contest the upcoming WFI elections due to the Sports Code guidelines, feels the protest launched by six wrestlers was motivated.
"When all this (protest) began (in January) I used to think why is it all happening? I had recited a poem back then (on social media)," he said and recited the poem again emphasising that he chose to side with the juniors and thus invited trouble for himself.
The 19-year-old Panghal along with several other wrestlers, their families and elders hit the streets in Hisar to protest against the ad-hoc panel's decision. "I am remembering this poem again today because things are becoming crystal clear." When countered that even under his tenure as President, the WFI had exempted Vinesh, Bajrang and others from trials for the 2018 Asian Games and that even during the 2022 CWG trials, the same wrestlers were given direct semifinal entries, he admitted it was a mistake.
"We did not send these wrestlers (to Commonwealth Games) directly, though we gave them direct semifinal berths. We realised later that perhaps it is not right and that's exactly why we discussed this issue at our Executive Committee, took advice of the coaches, studied the rules from other nations and passed the new rules in General Body Meeting that such exemptions will be not be given to any wrestler in any situation." "I myself did not make this rule, unilaterally. It was widely discussed and then a decision was taken." The WFI had passed the resolution on August 25 at its General Body Meeting in Rohtak, last year.
Singh chose not to speak when asked what he thinks of the presence of Gian Singh and Ashok Garg as technical experts in the IOA ad-hoc panel.
"Now I would request you to let this go. How well these coaches are well-versed in modern-day wrestling is another topic. I don't talk to the media now but some issues were rankling me, so I spoke today (on exemption given to wrestlers)," he said.&nbsp;

However, a cancellation report was filed in the POCSO case filed by a minor wrestler against Singh.

Wrestlers who came forward against Brij Bhushan had raised concerns about the Oversight Committee's lack of action despite their deposition earlier this year. During the wrestlers' deposition, multiple women wrestlers alleged that Brij Bhushan had inappropriately touched them and made inappropriate comments. One wrestler shared her traumatic experience of being touched on her stomach and chest multiple times, affecting her eating habits.
Another wrestler reported that Singh embraced her around the waist during a photo session after she won a gold medal at a domestic tournament.
A third wrestler expressed discomfort when Singh touched her during a group photograph at a selection trial. The committee also noted that some wrestlers felt uncomfortable with the behavior of national team coaches who hugged them or carried them on their shoulders.
Despite bringing the issue to the attention of Sports Authority of India officials and the CEO of the Target Olympic Podium Scheme, and the oversight committee thereafter, no significant action was taken.

The court summoned the former WFI administrators after taking cognisance of the chargesheet filed by the Delhi Police. Both Brij Bhushan, a BJP MP, and former WFI assistant secretary Tomar, were accused by a number of wrestlers of sexual harassment.
They have been directed to appear before the court on July 18.
