People who got the Covid-19 vaccine reported slightly longer menstrual cycles, according to a new study.&nbsp;

A study of nearly 20,000 people around the world observed that the Covid-19 vaccine can increase the cycle length and change the timing of the menstrual cycle. The research was published in the BMJ Medicine journal.&nbsp;
For the study, the team looked at over 250,000 cycles between October 1, 2020 and November 7, 2021. Participants had received vaccines including AstraZeneca, Covishield, Johnson &amp; Johnson, Covaxin, Sputnik, Pfizer and Moderna.&nbsp;
The findings suggested that the average increase in cycle length was four days and 13 percent experienced a delay of eight days or more. Researchers also observed that people who received two vaccinations within one menstrual cycle experienced greater disruptions.&nbsp;

As India continues its fight against Covid-19, the very first intranasal vaccine manufactured by Bharat Biotech got approved by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) on Tuesday. The vaccine has been approved for &nbsp;&lsquo;restricted emergency use in those aged above 18 years&rsquo;.
Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech International Limited (BBIL), the maker of Covaxin completed clinical trials of the nasal vaccine with about 4,000 volunteers. No side effects or adverse reactions were reported, news agency PTI reported quoting company sources.&nbsp;
Taking to twitter Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya shared the information on the new nasal vaccine. "With the science-driven approach &amp; Sabka Prayas, we will defeat COVID-19," Mandaviya said.

The UK has become the first country to approve a so-called “bivalent” COVID vaccine that targets both the original strain of COVID-19 and the newer Omicron variant, British health authorities announced on Monday.

The UK has become the first country to approve a so-called &ldquo;bivalent&rdquo; COVID vaccine that targets both the original strain of COVID-19 and the newer Omicron variant, British health authorities announced on Monday.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said it had given the green light to the Moderna vaccine as a &ldquo;sharpened tool&rdquo; against the novel coronavirus after it was found to meet its standards of safety, quality and effectiveness.
In each dose of the booster vaccine, &lsquo;Spikevax bivalent Original/Omicron&rsquo;, half of the vaccine (25 micrograms) targets the original virus strain from 2020 and the other half (25 micrograms) targets Omicron, the regulator said.
&ldquo;I am pleased to announce the approval of the Moderna bivalent booster vaccine, which was found in the clinical trial to provide a strong immune response against the Omicron BA.1 variant as well as the original 2020 strain,&rdquo; said MHRA Chief Executive Dr June Raine.
&ldquo;The first generation of COVID-19 vaccines being used in the UK continue to provide important protection against the disease and save lives. What this bivalent vaccine gives us is a sharpened tool in our armoury to help protect us against this disease as the virus continues to evolve,&rdquo; she said.
The MHRA said its decision to grant approval for this booster vaccine in the UK was endorsed by the government&rsquo;s independent expert scientific advisory body, the Commission on Human Medicines, after carefully reviewing the evidence. The regulator said its decision is based on data from a clinical trial, which showed that a booster with the bivalent Moderna vaccine triggers a strong immune response against both Omicron (BA.1) and the original 2020 strain. In an exploratory analysis, the bivalent vaccine was also found to generate a good immune response against the Omicron sub-variants BA.4 and BA.5.

&ldquo;The virus, SARS-CoV-2, is continually evolving in order to evade the immunity provided by vaccines. This novel bivalent vaccine represents the next step in the development of vaccines to combat the virus, with its ability to lead to a broader immune response than the original vaccine,&rdquo; said Professor Sir Munir Pirmohamed, Chair of the Commission on Human Medicines.
The authorities said that safety monitoring showed that the side effects observed were the same as those seen for the original Moderna booster dose and were typically mild and self-resolving, and no serious safety concerns were identified.
The UK&rsquo;s independent Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) will now advise on how this new vaccine should be rolled out as part of the country&rsquo;s booster vaccine deployment programme.
The vaccine has also been submitted for approval with the authorities in Australia, Canada and the European Union (EU). It is expected that the EU medicines regulator will approve the dose by next month.
Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel described the new vaccine as a "next generation COVID-19 vaccine", which will play an important role in protecting people over the winter.
"This represents the first authorisation of an Omicron-containing bivalent vaccine, further highlighting the dedication and leadership of the UK public health authorities in helping to end the COVID-19 pandemic. This bivalent vaccine has an important role to play in protecting people in the UK from COVID-19 as we enter the winter months," said Bancel.
According to official statistics, 126,504,756 vaccine doses have been administered in the UK including first and second doses as well as third and fourth booster doses rolled out on an age group basis.&nbsp;

Canada is going to throw out about 13.6 million doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine because it couldn't find any takers for it either at home or abroad.
Canada signed a contract with AstraZeneca in 2020 to get 20 million doses of its vaccine, and 2.3 million Canadians received at least one dose of it, mostly between March and June 2021.
Following concerns in the spring of 2021 about rare but potentially fatal blood clots from AstraZeneca, Canada focused on using its ample supplies of the mRNA vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna.
In July 2021, Canada promised to donate the rest of its procured supply, about 17.7 million doses. But in a statement Tuesday, Health Canada said that despite efforts to meet that pledge, 13.6 million doses have expired and will have to be thrown out.
"Due to limited demand for the vaccine and recipient country challenges with distribution and absorption, they were not accepted?" the statement said.
In all, Canada donated 8.9 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine — 4.8 millon doses from its main supply and 4.1 million doses that it bought from the COVAX vaccine-sharing programme.

The petitioner had claimed that this would affect people's independent choice of voting. He also said that inclusion of the PM's photo on the certificate serves no public purpose, as per reports. The petitioner wanted the government to give the option of a vaccine certificate without the PM's photo. The court said that once the Prime Minister assumes office as per mandate of the people, he or she ceases to be leader of a party. The judges also rejected the claim that the photo on the vaccine certificate would affect voting rights, as per reports. The petition had been filed in October and was rejected by a single-judge bench in December last year.

India has started giving booster shots to health workers, frontline workers and senior citizens with illnesses. The recommended period, however, between the second and the third dose is currently nine months.

The vaccines are unlikely to be available at the chemist shops anytime soon and people will still need to register on CoWIN platfomr for the third dose, reports quoting government sources said.
According to reports, 300 million doses of <a href="https://www.editorji.com/story/explained-should-gap-between-covid-19-doses-be-increased-1618295309957">Covishield</a> are presently stocked with the Serum Institute of India. Covishield accounts for 90% of vaccinations in India.
Both the SII and Covixin maker Bharat Biotech had asked govt to give full approval to their vaccines.

The worst of the coronavirus pandemic &mdash; deaths, hospitalizations and lockdowns &mdash; could be over this year, the WHO has said. But there is one big condition. The UN body has said that it's only possible if huge inequities in vaccinations and medicines are addressed quickly.
The head of emergencies at the World Health Organisation Dr Michael Ryan con Tuesday said the world &ldquo;may never end the virus&rdquo; because such pandemic viruses &ldquo;end up becoming part of the ecosystem.&rdquo;
But he added that &ldquo;we have a chance to end the public health emergency this year if we do the things that we've been talking about".
Dr Ryan was speaking during a panel discussion on vaccine inequity hosted by the World Economic Forum.

"Omicron is not the common cold and we cannot take it lightly just because it is causing mild infections. This variant has led to the collapse of the health system of some countries. Health workers at some places had to take leave leading to increased pressure." Stressing that vaccination is an important pillar in the Covid response programme, Dr Paul said, "We need to be vigilant, get vaccinated and follow Covid-appropriate behaviour. It is society's responsibility to slow the spread".
Dr. Jaiprakash Muliyil of the Indian Council of Medical Research told NDTV on Tuesday that "a majority of us will not know we have been infected, probably more than 80% will not even know when we have it."
The epidemiologist stressed that booster shots of Covid vaccine will make no difference.

The medical research body on Sunday tweeted the benefits of getting Covaxin's precautionary dose. It said, "Reassuring information on safety and immunogenicity of a booster dose of Covaxin administered six months after completion of a two dose primary vaccination series with Covaxin."
The government has said that the third dose will be of the same vaccine as the first two and there will be no mix and match.
The government has started administering 'precaution' doses of Covid-19 vaccines to frontline workers, healthcare workers and senior citizens with co-morbidities.
On December 25, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced that from January 3, 2022 vaccination will start for the children in the age group of 15-18 years and further announced administration of precaution dose for healthcare and frontline workers from January 10, 2022.
