DMK said that it had opposed when the island was ceded in 1974, the Tamil Nadu Congress demanded answers from the BJP government for the Chinese incursion into Indian territory.

DMK and its ally- the Congress in Tamil Nadu- on Sunday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his Congress "callously" gave away Katchatheevu island to Sri Lanka remark with the ruling party asserting that it had opposed in 1974 the ceding of the island to the neigbouring country.
Hitting out at PM Modi, the Tamil Nadu Congress demanded answers for the "Chinese incursion" into Indian territory.
Responding to the allegation by Modi, DMK Organisation Secretary R S Bharathi said the Prime Minister has "no achievements" to showcase and charged that he (Prime Minister) was only spreading "lies." Bharathi said it was wrong to talk about an issue without studying its history. In 1974, the DMK held state-wide agitations and public meetings to oppose and condemn the ceding of Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka.
The DMK's position has been made amply clear multiple times by late party patriarch M Karunanidhi and party president M K Stalin.
The DMK was out-and-out against giving away Katchatheevu to the neighbouring country. "You can wake someone who is asleep but not a person who is pretending," Bharathi, a former Rajya Sabha MP told PTI.
If Modi was really keen on Katchatheevu, he could have reclaimed that island during his 10 years in office. "Why did not he take up the Katchatheevu issue? Bharathi asked.
Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President K Selvaperunthagai slammed Modi for raking up the Katchatheevu issue.
On X, the Congress leader sought to know "when PM Modi will talk on Chinese incursion into Indian territory, the Parliament security breach, the Pulwama terror attack in which 44 soldiers were killed, Manipur which is on fire and the missing (stolen) documents related to Rafale fighter aircraft deal." Prime Minister Modi on Sunday cited a media report to assert that new facts reveal that the Congress "callously" gave away Katchatheevu island to Sri Lanka.
"Eye opening and startling! New facts reveal how Congress callously gave away Katchatheevu. This has angered every Indian and reaffirmed in people's minds- we can't ever trust Congress," he said on X, sharing the report.&nbsp;

The Election Commission on Wednesday directed the Karnataka chief electoral officer to take immediate and appropriate action on the DMK's complaint about alleged model code violation by Union minister and BJP leader Shobha Karandlaje.
The poll panel also sought a compliance report on the matter within 48 hours.
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has sought action against Karandlaje for alleging that a person from Tamil Nadu was responsible for the IED blast at the Rameshwaram Cafe in Bengaluru on March 1.
In its complaint to the Election Commission earlier in the day, the DMK said that the minister's statement generalised the people of Tamil Nadu as "extremists".
During a protest in Bengaluru on Tuesday, she had said that "law and order in Karnataka has deteriorated. She later apologised for her remarks and said she was retracting her comments.

The ruling DMK party has finalised the seat-sharing pact with the Congress party for the upcoming general elections.
According to the agreement, the Congress will contest in 9 seats in Tamil Nadu and 1 seat in Puducherry, a repeat of the 2019 seat-sharing formula.
The deal was finalised between DMK President and Chief Minister M K Stalin and Congress Tamil Nadu chief K Selvaperunthagai.
Addressing reporters, Congress leader Venugopal exuded confidence in the DMK-led combine winning all 40 seats in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and said the 'bonding' between the Congress and the DMK "is intact."
&ldquo;We are confident that INDIA Alliance will win all 40 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. They (NDA) can make the perception that they are winning but INDIA Alliance will be ruling the country after this election,&rdquo; he told PTI news agency.
Earlier, Kamal Haasan pledged full support to the DMK party for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The actor-turned-politician said that they won't be contesting in any of the Lok Saba seats, and added that it will focus on campaigning for its allies.
The seat-sharing pact with Congress comes a day after the DMK allotted two seats&mdash;both reserved constituencies &mdash; to Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and one for the Vaiko-led MDMK.&nbsp;
VCK will contest from Chidambaram and Villupuram, the two seats it represents in the current Lok Sabha.
The string of finalising the seat-sharing formula comfortable places the DMK, which is leading a multi-party Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) in Tamil Nadu. Apart from Congress, VCK and MDMK, it has ties with CPI (M), CPI, IUML and KMDK.

A day after his advertisement related to ISRO's new launch complex in Tamil Nadu caused a row for featuring a 'Chinese flag', DMK leader and Fisheries Minister Anitha R Radhakrishnan on Thursday said it was a gaffe by the designer.
The minister stressed that it was only a mistake and they (DMK) had no other intentions.
"A small mistake happened in the advertisement. We have no other intention. We have only love for India in our hearts," Radhakrishnan said, adding that it is his party's stand that India should stay united without giving any room for clashes on the grounds of caste or religion.
Radhakrishnan said it was late DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi who first voiced the demand for a new launch complex of ISRO at Kulasekarapattinam near here in Tamil Nadu. Also, Chief Minister MK Stalin and Thoothukudi Lok Sabha MP Kanimozhi had all along urged the Centre to set up the launch complex in the state, he told reporters.
This is why it was decided to give an advertisement (in dailies) to highlight the efforts made by the DMK leaders to bring the project to Tamil Nadu, the minister said.
Those who designed the advertisement made a gaffe which went unnoticed by them, the Minister said.
BJP leader and Union Minister L Murugan, however, demanded that the DMK apologise to the people for publishing that advertisement.
On the DMK's stand that the 'China' reference was a mistake, Murugan said, "It is our duty to put the Indian flag (in advertisement) and they (DMK) must apologise to the people. Only India's achievements have to be showcased. The country's achievements in space technology and the new ISRO complex in Tamil Nadu are the nation's pride." On February 28, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for a new launch complex of ISRO at Kulasekarapattinam, which is worth about Rs 986 crore. The complex, which can accommodate 24 launches per year, includes 35 facilities and features mobile launch structures (MLS) with checkout computers marking a significant stride in enhancing space exploration capabilities.
On the concluding day (Feb 28) of his two-day visit to Tamil Nadu, Modi strongly criticised the DMK for being "oblivious" to the nation's achievements in the space sector.
Addressing a BJP rally, PM Modi alleged that the DMK regime does not work, but only takes "false credit" and affixes its 'stickers' on Central schemes.
"Now they have crossed the limit. They have pasted the sticker of China to take credit for ISRO launchpad in Tamil Nadu. This is an insult to our space scientists, space sector, your tax money and you (the country)," he said, addressing the people.
In a post on X, the PM had said: "DMK&rsquo;s advertisement today is hilarious. They have insulted Indian science and the Indian space sector, for which they must apologise."

The DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) party of Tamil Nadu was caught in an embarrassing situation on February 28 over a controversial advertisement. The minister of fisheries and animal husbandry, Anitha R Radhakrishnan, published an advertisement in Tamil media having an image of a rocket with a Chinese flag on it. The advertisement was centric to the new launch complex inaugurated in Tiruchendur constituency by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the same day. Anitha Radhakrishnan represents the constituency.
In the advertisement, a picture of PM Modi was seen along with the chief minister of the state M K Stalin having rockets in the backdrop with one of the rockets having a Chinese flag on its tip. A few Chinese letters were also seen written on other rockets.&nbsp;
Posting the picture of the advertisement on his X handle, BJP state president K Annamalai wrote, "This advertisement by DMK Minister Thiru Anita Radhakrishnan in leading Tamil dailies today is a manifestation of DMK&rsquo;s commitment to China &amp; their total disregard for our country&rsquo;s sovereignty."

In yet another standoff with the DMK government, Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi walked out of the first session of the 2024 Tamil Nadu Assembly Monday after refusing to read the customary address prepared by the government.
He claimed that the speech has many passages that he disagrees with on "factual and moral grounds." He also flayed the ruling government for not letting the national anthem play at the beginning and end of the address.
"My repeated request and advice to show due respect to the national anthem and play it at the beginning and end of the address has been ignored. This address has numerous passages with which I convincingly disagree on factual and moral grounds. I lending my voice to them would constitute a constitutional travesty. Hence, with respect to the house, I conclude my address. Wish this house a productive and healthy discussion for the good of the people," Governor RN Ravi said.
Later, DMK Minister Durai Murugan moved a resolution to not record the governor's remarks, following which it was adopted.
"Tamil Nadu government got approval for governor's customary address and he was here to read his address. He didn't read his full speech but I don't want to blame him. The governor also said the National Anthem should have been sung. Everyone has many opinions but if we speak everything it won't be ethical," Speaker M Appavu said.
"This government, CM, minister, and MLAs will treat the governor with respect who is in a high position irrespective of many different opinions. I am requesting Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi to speak what he has in his heart. While we speak about what we have in our&mdash;&nbsp; funds for floods and cyclones. We didn't get any funds. PM Cares Fund is unaccountable. Can we ask for Rs 50,000 crore from the PM Cares Fund? It would be nice If the governor gets it for us," the speaker added.
Speaker Appavu then took a dig at the governor, saying, &ldquo;The Tamil Nadu Assembly is not less than those who walk on the path of Savarkar and Godse."

The son and daughter-in-law of the ruling DMK legislator were arrested and remanded to judicial custody allegedly for harassing their teenaged domestic help, police said on Friday.
The couple, Anto Mathivanan, 35, and his wife Maarlina, 32, of Thiruvanmiyur, here, were arrested after a police team under the Inspector of Neelangarai All Women Police Station, went to Ulundurpet Government Hospital and concluded the interrogation of the domestic help.
&ldquo;During the investigation, the 18-year-old maid servant said that she used to work in an apartment at Thiruvanmiyur and that the couple harassed and assaulted her,&rdquo; a release said.
On Friday, the police had registered FIR against Mathivanan, son of DMK MLA I Karunanidhi, and his wife Maarlina for reportedly beating and verbally abusing the domestic help belonging to Scheduled Caste.
Immediately after the news about the involvement of his son and daughter-in-law in the case spread, I Karunanidhi from the city distanced himself. He and his son lived separately and that he had no idea about the allegation, he had said.
On January 16 the Government Hospital, Ulundurpet, informed the police about an 18 year-old woman undergoing treatment at the said hospital for injuries on her body, leading to a police team under the Neelangarai AWPS Inspector rush to Ulundurpet for the inquiry.
&ldquo;The special police team arrested Anto Mathivanan, S/o Karunanidhi, and his wife Maarlina, on January 25 and produced them before the court today and remanded them to judicial custody,&rdquo; the release said.

DMK President and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has pulled up party MP DNV Senthil Kumar for his remarks describing Hindi heartland as "gaumutra states", the party said on Tuesday. DMK always insisted on the need for a dignified approach while making public remarks, the party added.
The Dharmapuri MP's remarks had drawn instant condemnation from the BJP as well as its ally Congress, whose leaders asked him to tender an apology.
Senior DMK leader and Organising Secretary RS Bharathi said the MP has tendered a public apology.
Referring to the Parliament speech of Kumar relating to the outcome of the five-state elections, Bharathi said the MP had used "a word that gave a wrong meaning." "Upon knowing this, party president and chief minister Stalin strongly rebuked Senthil Kumar," he said in a statement.
He added the MP has issued a statement seeking public apology, stating that he had not made the said remarks with any particular intention.
Bharathi stressed on the need for all to maintain dignity while making public opinions.
The DMK founder late CN Annaudurai's principles of "Duty-Dignity-Discipline '' should be followed by all, he said and urged that partymen should refrain from making personal opinions on national issues.
While participating in a discussion on J&amp;K Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill in the House, Kumar had said the BJP can win elections only in the Hindi heartland states and not in south India.
While his description of the Hindi heartland as "gaumutra" states was expunged by the Lok Sabha Speaker later, the remarks sparked a controversy with several members across party lines condemning the DMK leader and the video of his speech going viral on social media.
Facing flak, he later apologised.
"Commenting on the results of the five recent state assembly elections, I have used a word in an inappropriate way. Not using that term with any intent, I apologize for sending the wrong meaning across," he said in a post on X.

With Sundar raking up the issue on Twitter and later emotionally addressing a press conference, the ruling party announced that the platform speaker, Sivaji Krishnamurthy, was being dismissed from the party for indiscipline and bringing disrepute to it.

BJP state president K Annamalai recalled Krishnamurthy's controversial speech about Governor R N Ravi some time ago and said that the platform speaker's comments about both the constitutional leader as well as Sundar "are highly condemnable, and we demand immediate action on this repeat offender." Annamalai also tweeted a clip, in which Krishnamurthy is purported to have made some remarks about the Governor in light of the portfolio re-allocation in the TN cabinet following the arrest of state minister V Senthil Balaji.

A day after Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai held the ruling DMK responsible for the recent spread of fake news about attack on migrant workers, the police have filed a case against him on charges of inciting violence and promoting enmity between groups, India Today reported.&nbsp;
This after a video went viral on social media where migrant labourers from Bihar were being brutally thrashed.
However, the police later said the video was fake and registered a case against three people including BJP spokesperson Prashant Umrao, for spreading the video.

Later Prabhu was admitted to the hospital where he succumbed to internal injuries on Tuesday.
DMK Councillor Chinnaswamy's son accused of the murder has allegedly dragged Prabhu out of his house and beaten him to death.
Prabhu's family alleged that not a single DMK cadre has come to their house to help them and demanded CM intervention to help the family get justice.
The police have filed an FIR in the matter and all nine including the DMK councillor were arrested by the police.

Shivaji Krishnamoorthy sparked a controversy on Friday with his remarks against Ravi.
"If the Governor refuses to utter the name of Ambedkar in his Assembly speech, don't I have the right to assault him? If you (governor) don't read out the speech given by the Tamil Nadu government, then go to Kashmir, and we'll send terrorists so that they'll gun you down," Krishnamoorthy said.
Reacting to Krishnamoorthy's comments, Abdullah said on Twitter, "Can go to Kashmir is not a threat we expect from our friends in the DMK." Meanwhile, both the Tamil Nadu Raj Bhavan and the BJP have approached police with separate complaints, seeking action against Krishnamoorthy. (PTI)

The ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu on Saturday suspended an office-bearer, Shivaji Krishnamoorthy, from all his posts and the primary party membership for using abusive and derogatory language against Governor R N Ravi.
A DMK release by party general secretary and senior Minister Duraimurugan (Water Resources Department) said party orator Shivaji Krishnamoorthy is suspended for violating party discipline and bringing disrepute to the party.
The ruling party, however, did not make any reference to his abusive comments against the Governor.
Shivaji Krishnamoorthy, who made critical remarks against Ravi in connection with him skipping portions of the government-prepared address to the state assembly, belongs to the Chennai North party district.
Ravi avoided some paragraphs of the address on January 9 and made some points on his own. He walked out of the House later and there appears to be no signs of the confrontation between Raj Bhavan and the DMK regime fading soon.
Tamil Nadu Raj Bhavan and the state unit of BJP have approached police with separate complaints, seeking action against the DMK functionary for his 'abusive and intimidatory' speech, targeting Ravi.&nbsp;

Days after ruckus erupted in Tamil Nadu assembly over Governor RN Ravi's customary speech, DMK leader Shivaji Krishnamoorthy has sparked a controversy with his remark against the state's governor.
Addressing an event on Thursday, Krishnamoorthy said, "If the governor refuses to utter the name of Ambedkar in his Assembly speech, don't I have the right to assault him?"

Tamil Nadu Assembly witnessed ruckus immediately after Governor R N Ravi began his customary address of the opening session on Monday. Legislators of the ruling DMK and its allies, the Congress and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) started raising slogans against the Governor for his recent remarks that 'Tamizhagam' rather than 'Tamil Nadu'would be more appropriate name for the State and staged a walkout from the assembly.
DMK MLAs also raised slogans against the Governor, saying "don't impose BJP, RSS ideology."
The DMK and allies opposed the Governor's stand and accused him of toeing the BJP's ideological position. "This is not Nagaland, this is proud Tamil Nadu," the legislators raised sloganeering. However, Governor Ravi continued delivering his address amid the uproar. There was also a demand to ban online gambling by the leaders in the assembly. Legislators protested putting the blame on the Governor who has not yet given his assent to the Bill banning online gambling.
The state is witnessing a tussle between the ruling DMK regime and the Raj Bhavan over several bills which are pending with the Governor including the one prohibiting online gambling, and wager-based online games of chance of Rummy.
