The International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA) 2023 were held on May 27 in Abu Dhabi. &nbsp;&lsquo;Brahmastra&rsquo; and &lsquo;Gangubai Kathiawadi&rsquo; won top honours and the event. Alia Bhatt won Best Actor in a Leading Role (female) for &lsquo;Gangubai Kathiawadi&rsquo;, while Hrithik Roshan bagged the trophy of Best Actor in a Leading Role for &lsquo;Vikram Vedha&rsquo;.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' won several awards in the technical categories, including for cinematography, screenplay and dialogue.
Babil Khan, son of late Bollywood actor Irrfan Khan, shared the Best Debut (male) award with Santanu Maheshwari. The former won for his performance in 'Qala', while latter won for &lsquo;Gangubai Kathiawadi.&rsquo;

Oscar nominees will be announced on January 24, 2023, and the final vote will take place between March 2 and March 7, 2023.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) announced a list of 301 feature films eligible for Oscars 2023 and Indian films &lsquo;RRR&rsquo;, &lsquo;Gangubai Kathiawadi&rsquo;, &lsquo;The Kashmir Files&rsquo; and &lsquo;Kantara&rsquo; have made the cut.
&lsquo;The Last Film Show&rsquo;, India&rsquo;s official Oscar entry, also features in the list along with Marathi titles &lsquo;Me Vasantrao&rsquo; and &lsquo;Tujhya Sathi Kahi Hi&rsquo;, R Madhavan&rsquo;s &lsquo;Rocketry: The Nambi Effect&rsquo;, and Kannada movie &lsquo;Vikrant Rona&rsquo;.
Documentaries &lsquo;All That Breathes&rsquo; by Shaunak Sen and Kartiki Gonsalves&rsquo; &lsquo;The Elephant Whisperers&rsquo; are also part of the list.
&lsquo;Chhello Show&rsquo;, &lsquo;<a href="https://www.editorji.com/entertainment-news/south/rrr-screening-tickets-sold-out-in-98-seconds-in-los-angeles-chinese-theatre-1672931991434">RRR</a>&rsquo;, &lsquo;All That Breathes&rsquo; and &lsquo;The Elephant Whisperers&rsquo; have already made it to the Oscars shortlists for four categories.
&lsquo;Chhello Show&rsquo; made it to the best international film segment, while &lsquo;RRR&rsquo;s song &lsquo;Naatu Naatu&rsquo; has been shortlisted in the music (original song) category.
&lsquo;All That Breathes&rsquo; is included in the documentary feature shortlist and &lsquo;The Elephant Whisperers&rsquo; in the documentary short category.
The contention list includes movies that can officially compete in various categories but this does not guarantee that they will advance in the final nominations of the Academy Awards that will be announced on January 24.

Actor Alia Bhatt conveyed love to the head curator of the British Film Institute, Robin Baker, after he praised her and wrote a long note on why the actor should be nominated at the British Academy Film Awards and Oscars.
He also mentioned that he was moved by Alia Bhatt's acting skills in &lsquo;Gangubai Kathiawadi&rsquo;.
The film, which is currently campaigning for the BAFTA Awards and Oscars in all categories, is directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
Taking to Instagram, Robin wrote, &lsquo;If I was a member of BAFTA or the Academy (I'm not), this year I would be voting for Alia Bhatt as Best Actress for her performance in GANGUBAI KATHIAWADI (Sanjay Leela Bhansali, India, 2022). She plays a prostitute turned underworld brothel madam turned campaigner for sex workers&rsquo; rights, and the joy of her performance is how she grows as her character develops.&rsquo;
Talking about the film, he further added, &lsquo;The film is big, brash, sentimental and hugely enjoyable, but Bhatt is sensational. There's the additional pleasure of the film's classic Hindi cinema references - from Gangubai's love of Dev Anand to scenes of cinema-going in the 50s and 60s to the numerous film posters lining the streets around Bombay's red light district. The nominations for the 23rd edition of the International Indian Film Academy and Awards (IIFA) were announced on Monday. &lsquo;Gangubai Kathiawadi&rsquo; and &lsquo;Brahmastra Part One: Shiva&rsquo;, Alia Bhatt's two blockbusters of the year, are leading the nominations for the upcoming award show.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali&rsquo;s &lsquo;Gangubai Kathiawadi&rsquo; received eight nods, including best actor (female) for <a href="https://www.editorji.com/entertainment-news/bollywood/alia-bhatt-shares-a-message-for-mothers-says-listening-to-your-body-post-delivery-is-key-1671945774563">Alia</a>, best picture, and best director for Bhansali. Besides the best director nod, he is also a contender in the best music director category.
&lsquo;Brahmastra Part One: Shiva&rsquo; will be vying awards in best director, best supporting actor (both male and female), music director, best story (original), best playback singer (both male and female) and best lyrics categories.
The other contenders for best picture trophy are Kartik Aaryan&rsquo;s &lsquo;Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2&rsquo;, Alia&rsquo;s maiden production venture &lsquo;Darlings&rsquo;, &lsquo;Drishyam 2&rsquo; and &lsquo;Vikram Vedha&rsquo;.
&lsquo;Mafia Queens of Mumbai&rsquo; received four nods - best supporting actor (male) for Vijay Raaz, best playback singer (female), best story (adapted) and best lyrics.

During her appearance on a roundtable interview conducted by Film Companion, she said that misogyny is the reason why Alia didn&rsquo;t receive praise in the manner that a male actor would after delivering a massive hit. &nbsp;
Vidya asked, &lsquo;How come Gangubai did well? If a woman&rsquo;s film does well, it&rsquo;s the director&rsquo;s credit, and this is ridiculous.&rsquo;
She further added, &lsquo;We worked so hard as women to have a certain standing today, where we&rsquo;re headlining films. More and more actresses are doing that. Alia Bhatt starrer 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' was one of the most talked about films of the year. The film was being campaigned for the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) 2022. But, the makers are now aiming big and trying to take the film to the Oscars this year. This Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial was based on Hussain Zaidi&rsquo;s book 'Mafia Queens of Mumbai'.
As reported by Deadline, the makers have decided to submit the film in all major categories including &ndash; Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Screenplay among others for the 95th Academy Awards. Another big film from India, SS Rajamouli's magnum opus 'RRR' is also being submitted in all the major categories after not being selected as India's official entry for Oscars 2023.
'Gangubai Kathiawadi' had its premiere at the 72nd edition of the Berlin International Film Festival and received major applause as well as a standing ovation from the audience. &nbsp;
The film was released in February this year and was commercially successful grossing over ₹200 crore worldwide. The film also stars Ajay Devgn, Shantanu Maheshwari, Vijay Raaz in pivotal roles.

&lsquo;Gangubai Kathiawadi&rsquo; is now starting its campaign for the prestigious British Academy Film (BAFTA) Awards 2023.&nbsp;

&lsquo;Gangubai Kathiawadi&rsquo;, starring Alia Bhatt, is being submitted for the prestigious British Academy Film (BAFTA) Awards 2023 in all categories, as per a release from the film&rsquo;s team. The Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial is now starting its campaign for the awards season. The 76th BAFTA Awards is scheduled to be held at the Royal Festival Hall in London in February 2023.&nbsp;
 According to Hindustan Times, a statement from the film&rsquo;s team says that as part of the campaign, &lsquo;Gangubai Kathiawadi&rsquo; will be submitted for BAFTA members&rsquo; consideration in all categories including Best Film, Director, Adapted Screenplay, and Leading Actress.&nbsp;
 Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali will now reportedly visit London and partake in several events to support the campaign. He is expected to speak about his craft at a BAFTA Masterclass on November 28.&nbsp;
 In 2003, Sanjay Leela Bhansali&rsquo;s film &lsquo;Devdas&rsquo; had been nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category.&nbsp;
 As per the Hindustan Times report, the director talked about the film&rsquo;s campaign and said they are immensely blessed to have received so much appreciation for their film globally. Alia Bhatt added that it&rsquo;s a great honour to take &lsquo;Gangubai Kathiawadi&rsquo; to the world stage.&nbsp;

The film is loosely based on S. Hussain Zaidi's book 'Mafia Queens of Mumbai'.
 
Like most Bhansali films, it takes around 15-20 minutes to earn the audience's involvement with the film and characters. You tend to doubt if the film will indeed keep you entertained till the end as you witness some missing roots and abrupt endings of story tracks. However, as the second half clicks in, it becomes gripping, and the screenplay definitely attains pace. The film's length is a concern at a time when the audience is tuned to watch shorter movies and lives on snackable videos. But that's classic Sanjay Leela Bhansali. His films are usually longer than expected.
 
Alia Bhatt, as the titular Ganga, has tried her best to get into the skin of the character. She manages to keep you engaged throughout the film and ticks all the boxes necessary to make the character look believable – including the minute flaws of the character ingrained in the script. You may want to question the writing -- especially on the aspects of her personality -- but Alia salvages it with her performance.
 
As Gangubai's boyfriend Ramnik Lal, Shantanu Maheshwari infuses freshness, and the filmmaker has utilised it to the film's advantage. Seema Pahwa and Jim Sarbh have done justice to whatever is offered.
 
Ajay Devgn in an extended cameo as Rahim Lala, a don and Gangubai's sworn brother, is impressive. Huma Qureshi's special appearance as Dilruba goes unnoticed. Vijay Raaz as Raziabai is terrific as usual, but we wish he had more substance and a little more screen presence. This entry and the abrupt and unsatisfactory exit of characters and sub-plots leave you with a sense of having a ginger tea, albeit with no-ginger for taste. This was perhaps an attempt to capture multiple aspects of Ganga's life and journey.
 
Bhansali is an artist extraordinaire of sewing emotions in character establishing moment. In one scene, a girl reaches out to Gangu to pen a letter to her father. As she dictates her emotions for Ganga to capture, many other girls pitch in with a sentence of their own. It shows how each one of those women had a similar life story to share, including Ganga. It's poetic! Dialogues are impactful, and the writers have ensured not to make them overdramatic.
 
Sanjay Leela Bhansali has always managed to enrich the storytelling experience with a list of songs to enhance the cinematic experience for the audience. But this film's music and background score aren't as impactful as in his previous works. However, the grand set and cinematography continue to enthral and excite the audience adding to the script and the storyline without making it look forced.
 
Those who love Bhansali's storytelling style or Alia Bhat's attempt to experiment with her characters don't miss the film in theatres. Or else you can wait to stream it at the luxury of your home once it hits Netflix.

Actor Alia Bhatt has turned producer with her upcoming film 'Darlings', produced by her banner Eternal Sunshine Productions. Set in Mumbai against the backdrop of a conservative lower-middle-class neighbourhood, 'Darlings' traces the unique story of a quirky mother-daughter duo navigating through crazy circumstances as they try to find their place in the world. Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ has landed in a legal soup.
The Supreme Court on Wednesday suggested the makers to change the title of the film.
The suggestion comes in light of the several cases pending before courts seeking to halt the release of Alia Bhatt-starrer.
Among these cases is one by Babu Ravji Shah, the real Gangubai's adopted son. He had alleged that the film is defamatory towards his mother. He has challenged an order from the Bombay High Court which refused to stay the release of the film.
Earlier, Congress MLA also filed a petition to change the name of the film stating that the title maligns the name of Kathiawad city and added that it misrepresents Kamathipura as a red-light area while showing the Kathiawadi community in poor light.
‘Gangubai Kathaiwadi’ is based on the real-life sex worker who rose to political prominence in the neighbourhood of Kamathipura in Mumbai.
Starring Alia Bhatt as Gangubai, the film will hit the theatres on February 25.
