The 2025 Golden Globe Awards saw "Emilia Perez" and "The Brutalist" take home major accolades, with standout performances from Adrien Brody, Demi Moore, and Sebastian Stan.

Surreal narco-musical "Emilia Perez" and epic immigrant drama "The Brutalist" were the big winners at the Golden Globes on Sunday, as prizes were shared widely across an international crop of movies at the year's first major showbiz awards gala.
French director Jacques Audiard's Mexico-set "Emilia Perez" took four prizes, including best comedy or musical film, while "The Brutalist" was named best drama and also picked up best actor for Adrien Brody, who plays a Hungarian Holocaust survivor.
"Emilia Perez," about a drug lord who transitions to life as a woman, had entered the night with the most nominations at 10.
It won for best non-English language film and best original song, while Zoe Saldana took best supporting actress honors, nudging out her co-star Selena Gomez.
"You can maybe put us in jail, you can beat us up, but you never can take away our soul, our resistance, our identity," said Karla Sofia Gascon, the film's star, who is transgender.
She added: "Raise your voice... and say, 'I won. I am who I am, not who you want'."
Big wins at the Globes can help movies earn new audiences and build vital momentum toward the Oscars in early March.
Sunday also proved an important night for "The Brutalist," which shrugged off concerns over its sprawling runtime to earn best director for Brady Corbet.
"I was told that no one would come out and see it," said Corbet, of his epic about a Jewish architect who survives Nazi persecution and emigrates to the United States.
"No one was asking for a three-and-a-half hour film about a mid-century designer... but it works," he added.
In one of the night's biggest upsets, Brazil's Fernanda Torres won best actress in a drama film for "I'm Still Here," which chronicles a family ripped apart by the country's military dictatorship in the 1970s.

Brody's win was one of the night's remarkable career comebacks, more than two decades after he became the youngest ever Oscar best actor winner for "The Pianist," in which he also played a Holocaust survivor.
"There was a time not too long ago that I felt that this may be a moment never afforded to me again," he said.
"This story... is very reminiscent of my mother's, and my ancestral journey of fleeing the horrors of war and coming to this great country."
And there was another late-career triumph for Demi Moore, who won best actress in a comedy for body horror flick "The Substance," which takes a satirical and often grotesque look at the pressures placed on women by society as they age.
Accepting her prize, Moore reflected on how decades ago, she had been told by a Hollywood producer that she was "a popcorn actress."
"I bought in, and I believed that, and that corroded me over time," said the now 62-year-old "Ghost" star.
But "I had this magical, bold, courageous, out-of-the-box, absolutely bonkers script come across my desk called 'The Substance,' and the universe told me that 'you're not done.'"

The always controversial Globes are in year two of a revamp, following a Los Angeles Times expose in 2021 that showed that the awards' voting body -- the Hollywood Foreign Press Association -- had no Black members.
Now under new ownership, and with the HFPA disbanded, organizers were hoping to capitalize on a ratings bump registered last January.
Comedian Nikki Glaser hosted the ceremony, kicking off the gala with an irreverent, well-received monologue.
"Welcome to the 82nd Golden Globes, Ozempic's biggest night," she quipped, referring to the weight-loss drug that has proven wildly popular in famously looks-conscious Hollywood.
Among the dramas, "Conclave," a fictionalized account of high-stakes Vatican horse-trading, depicting how the death of a pope sends the church's various factions into battle for its future, took the award for best screenplay.
In comedy, Sebastian Stan won the best actor for "A Different Man," in which he portrays a man who undergoes experimental treatment for a disfiguring facial condition, but comes to rue the consequences.
"Our ignorance and discomfort around disability and disfigurement has to end now," said Stan.
"We have to normalize it and continue to expose ourselves to it."
Kieran Culkin won best supporting actor for Jesse Eisenberg's awkward road trip comedy "A Real Pain," about mismatched American cousins retracing their European roots.
Latvian movie "Flow," a surreal dialogue-free odyssey about a group of animals forced to work together as they drift in a boat through a flooded world, won best animated film.
The show also honors the best in television, with big wins for historical epic "Shogun," showbiz comedy "Hacks" and limited series "Baby Reindeer." Filmmakers Hansal Mehta, Kiran Rao, and actor Anil Kapoor congratulated director Payal Kapadia after her acclaimed film All We Imagine As Light secured two nominations at the Golden Globe Awards 2025.
The Malayalam-Hindi film, which marks Kapadia's feature directorial debut, is nominated for Best Motion Picture Non-English Language and the Best Direction - Motion Picture at the upcoming awards.
All We Imagine... charted history by becoming the first Indian title from India to win the Grand Prix Award at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

Mehta, who has long supported the movie as India's "official selection for the Oscars", shared the Golden Globe nomination cards for the film on X soon after the announcement was made on Monday.

In September, the Film Federation of India (FFI) selected Hindi film Laapataa Ladies (Lost Ladies), about two brides getting swapped on the day of their wedding during a train ride in 2001, to represent India at the 97th Academy Awards in the Best International Film category.
"India's official selection for the Oscars secures 2 nominations at the Golden Globes. Best non-English language film and best director for All We Imagine As Light and Payal Kapadia," Mehta wrote, tongue firmly in cheek.
Laapataa Ladies director Rao said "Christmas has come early this year" with twin Golden Globe nominations for "All We Imagine..." "Brava Payal!" she wrote on her Instagram Stories.
"Let's celebrate this together," actor Divya Prabha wrote on Rao's post.
Kapoor, who was part of the multiple Golden Globe-winning English movie "Slumdog Millionaire", said it is a "monumental recognition of Indian cinema and the storytelling prowess" of Kapadia.
"So incredibly proud!" he wrote on his official X page.
Rana Daggubati, whose production banner Spirit Media has distributed "All We Imagine..." across Indian theatres, shared the news on his Instagram Stories with two star-struck emojis.
After All We Imagine... film was announced as one of the nominees in the Best Motion Picture Non-English Language category, the official Instagram page of the film posted: "Honoured to be in the company of such incredible films from around the world." Other names in the segment are: Emilia Perez (France), The Girl With the Needle (Poland), I'm Still Here (Brazil), The Seed of the Sacred Fig (US) and the Vermiglio (Italy).
The makers dedicated the Best Direction - Motion Picture to "everyone who poured their hearts into making this film".
In this category at the 82nd Golden Globes, Kapadia will compete with Brady Corbet (The Brutalist), Coralie Fargeat (The Substance), Edward Berger (Conclave), Jacques Audiard (Emilia Perez) and Sean Baker, whose Anora won Cannes top prize Palme d'Or.
All We Imagine... has been on a winning streak since it earned the Cannes Grand Prix, the second highest honour at the prestigious film gala. It was recently named the best international feature at Gotham Awards and New York Film Critics Circle as well as best 2024 film by Sight and Sound magazine.
In 2022, SS Rajamouli's RRR earned two nominations at the Globes in Best Non-English Language Film and Best Song for Naatu Naatu. The film registered a win in the song category. It also became the first Indian feature production to claim an Oscar in the best original song segment for Naatu Naatu.
Previously, Shekhar Kapur was nominated in the Best Direction - Motion Picture category at the 1999 Globes for his Hollywood film Elizabeth, whereas Mira Nair's Salaam Bombay (1989) and Monsoon Wedding (2002) were nominated for Best Foreign Language Film, which has been renamed to Best Motion Feature Non-English.
The 2025 Golden Globe Awards will be held on January 5 in Los Angeles. It will stream live in India on Lionsgate Play.

Christopher Nolan secured the award for Best Director-Motion Picture for his biopic film &lsquo;Oppenheimer&rsquo;. During his acceptance speech, the filmmaker remembered his &ldquo;dear friend&rdquo; Heath Ledger.&nbsp;
Nolan said, &ldquo;The only time I&rsquo;ve ever been on this stage before was accepting one of these on behalf of our dear friend, Heath Ledger, and that was complicated and challenging for me&rdquo;. He added, &ldquo;In the middle of speaking, I got all stuck, and Robert Downey Jr. caught my eye and gave me a look of love and support &mdash; the same look he&rsquo;s giving me now.&rdquo;&nbsp;

The biopic is set during World War II and tells the story of &lsquo;Oppenheimer&rsquo; learnt that testing of atomic bomb would ignite the atmosphere and destroy the world. He still pushed the button anyway. He was also known as the &ldquo;Father of the Atomic Bomb.&rdquo;&nbsp;
According to Variety, the award marks Nolan&rsquo;s first Globe though he has been previously nominated for writing 2000 film &lsquo;Momento&rsquo; writing and directing 2010&rsquo;s &lsquo;Inception.&rsquo; He was also nominated as best director for 2017 film &lsquo;Dunkirk.&rsquo;&nbsp;

This marked the inaugural nomination for the 37-year-old actor who portrayed Mollie Kyle, a real-life character whose family and community in 1920s Oklahoma's Osage Nation were the victims of a string of murders.
Gladstone opened her award acceptance speech in the Blackfeet language, an Algonquian language spoken by the Blackfoot or Niitsitapi people in Montana, US.
The actor termed the win as &lsquo;a historic one&rsquo; that doesn't belong to only her.
&lsquo;I love everyone in this room. I don't have words. I just spoke a bit of Blackfeet language, a beautiful community nation that raised me, that encouraged me to keep going, keep doing this here with my mom, who, even though she's not Blackfeet, worked tirelessly to get our language into our classroom so I had a Blackfeet language teacher growing up,&rsquo; she said.
&lsquo;This is for every little rez kid, every little urban kid, every little Native kid who has a dream and is seeing themselves represented in our stories told by ourselves, in our own words, with tremendous allies and tremendous trust from within, from each other,&rsquo; she continued.
Gladstone also thanked Scorsese and her co-star Leonardo DiCaprio. She said, &lsquo;You are all changing things. Thank you for being such allies.&rsquo;
She further said she is grateful to be able to speak even a little bit of Blackfeet, which she's not fluent in.
&lsquo;In this business, Native actors used to speak their lines in English and then the sound mixers would run them backwards to accomplish Native languages on camera... It (the award) doesn't belong to just me. I'm holding it right now. I'm holding it with all my beautiful sisters in the film,&rsquo; she said.

Robert Downey Jr recently likened his role in &lsquo;Oppenheimer&rsquo; to his stint as Iron Man.
&lsquo;There have been three times in my career when I became completely obsessed with the possibility of playing a role,&rsquo; he told W Magazine.
&lsquo;First time was Chaplin. Second time was Tony Stark, in Iron Man,&rsquo; he added.
&lsquo;And the third time &ndash; I got the trifecta, and you&rsquo;re lucky if this happens a couple of times &ndash; was with Lewis Strauss, for Oppenheimer. I knew a little bit about my character because I&rsquo;m kind of a Cold War enthusiast. I don&rsquo;t know why I&rsquo;ve been obsessed with it&hellip; I think that, sadly, that period informs where we are nowadays in the world. I knew that Strauss was involved in the development of the proximity fuse and that he headed up the Atomic Energy Commission,&rsquo; he said.

A few members were also accused of making sexist and racist remarks and soliciting favors from celebrities and movie studios.

The 81st Golden Globe Awards will take place on January 7, 2024.

The Golden Globe Awards were acquired by Eldridge Industries and Dick Clark Productions on June 12. This will shut down the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), whose reputation was dented by its ethics and lack of diversity.
 Eldridge and Dick Clark Productions (DCP) will continue to manage the awards telecast and focus on expanding the Globes&rsquo; viewership around the world, a press release said. DCP is co-owned by Eldridge and Penske Media.

&lsquo;RRR&rsquo; is a period drama that narrates the story of freedom fighters Komaram Bheem and Alluri Seetharamaraju. It is set in the British-occupied India of the 1920s. The cast also includes Alia Bhatt and Ajay Devgn as well as British actors Ray Stevenson, Alison Doody and Olivia Morris.
&lsquo;RRR&rsquo; earned over ₹ 1,200 crore globally and it has already won a slew of international honours including Best Director for Rajamouli at the New York Film Critics Circle awards. &lsquo;RRR&rsquo; has also submitted itself for consideration in various Oscar categories.

Filmmaker SS Rajamouli&rsquo;s magnum opus &lsquo;RRR&rsquo;, starring Ram Charan and Jr NTR, has been nominated in two categories at the Golden Globe Awards - Best Non-English Language Film and Best Original Song for 'Naatu Naatu'.
Sharing the news on Twitter, the official handle of the Golden Globes wrote, 'Congratulations to the nominees for Best Picture - Non-English Language--All Quiet on the Western Front, Argentina, 1985, Close, Decision to Leave and RRR.&rsquo; The official Twitter account of RRR retweeted the post.

&lsquo;RRR&rsquo; had recently been conferred with various awards. Composer MM Keeravani won Best Original Score at the Boston Society of Film Critics on Sunday night.
Taking to Twitter, Boston Society of Film Critics Circle wrote, &lsquo;WINNER, Best Original Score: RRR (by M. M. Keeravani), Runner Up: WOMEN TALKING (by Hildur Gu&eth;nad&oacute;ttir)&rsquo;
This isn't the first win for the film in the US. &lsquo;RRR&rsquo; won the Best International Film award at the Atlanta Film Critics Circle, and SS Rajamouli won the best director award at the New York Film Critics Circle.
&lsquo;RRR&rsquo;, set in the 1920s pre-independent era, is based on the lives of two well-known revolutionaries &ndash; Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem. &nbsp;The film earned over ₹1100 crore worldwide during its theatrical run. Recently, it was re-released across several cities in the US as part of the Beyond Fest.
