Greece has passed a bill legalising same-sex marriage and adoption

Greece's parliament on Thursday overwhelmingly adopted a bill legalising same-sex marriage and adoption in a landmark reform promoted by the conservative government despite opposition from the powerful Orthodox Church.
Once the law is promulgated, Greece will become the 37th country in the world and the first Orthodox Christian one to legalise adoption by same-sex families.
The bill, which was supported by the New Democracy party of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, was approved with 176 votes out of the 245 MPs present following two days of debates.
"This is a milestone for human rights, reflecting today's Greece -- a progressive, and democratic country, passionately committed to European values," Mitsotakis said on X, formerly Twitter.
When the result was announced, dozens of people waving rainbow flags celebrated in front of the parliament building in central Athens.
Although dozens of ruling New Democracy party legislators were expected to oppose the bill, support from opposition parties meant it was certain to pass.
Mitsotakis, who personally spearheaded the bill, had urged lawmakers to "boldly abolish a serious inequality" in Greek democracy that had rendered same-sex families "invisible".
The reform would "significantly improve the lives of quite a few of our fellow citizens, without taking away anything from the lives of the many", he added.
The vote had been hailed as historic by LGBTQ associations who said same-sex families faced a labyrinth of administrative challenges amounting to discrimination under present family law.
When their children fall ill in Greece, non-biological parents currently have no right to decide what medical procedures are necessary for them.
Children do not automatically inherit from their non-biological parents.
If a child has two fathers, they can only be registered with the civil registry and covered by social services by entering the name of the biological mother.
And if the biological parent dies, the state can take away children from the other parent.
&nbsp;
- Church 'totally opposed' - &nbsp;
Dozens of Mitsotakis's conservative New Democracy party's 158 lawmakers were expected to oppose the bill or abstain.
However, support from the main opposition leftist Syriza party -- its leader, Stefanos Kasselakis, is gay -- the socialist Pasok party and other smaller parties, meant defet was almost impossible.
A simple majority in the 300-member parliament vote was needed for the bill to pass.
The Church of Greece -- which has close ties to many government MPs -- had said it was "totally opposed" to the reform, arguing that it "condemns" children to grow up in an "environment of confusion".
Archbishop Ieronymos, the head of the church, slammed the proposed law as part of a bid to impose a "new reality that seeks only to corrupt the homeland's social cohesion".
Some 4,000 people demonstrated in Athens against the measure on Sunday, many of them brandishing religious icons and crucifixes.
"It is said Greece is 30 years behind (the rest of the world). In such cases, thank God it is," the parliament spokesman for the hard-right party Niki said on Wednesday during the two-day debate.
Kasselakis, who married his partner in a US ceremony in October, has been subjected to homophobic insults, most recently from a central Greece mayor and an island group governor.
Mitsotakis was careful to stress last month that the changes would benefit just "a few children and couples".
The conservative leader, who comfortably won re-election in June, had promised to enact the reform during his second four-year term.
He announced it in January, just days after Kasselakis said Syriza would submit their own proposals for equality in marriage.

- 'Day of joy' - &nbsp;
Greek LGBTQ families, who had maintained a low profile since the reform was unveiled last month, called for a celebratory gathering in Athens on Thursday.
"This is a day of joy," Rainbow Families Greece, an NGO helping LGBTQ families, said on Facebook.
Same-sex couples will still not be able to use assisted reproduction or a surrogate mother, procedures reserved for single women or heterosexual couples who have trouble conceiving.
Greece had been condemned for anti-gay discrimination by the European Court of Human Rights in 2013, after gay couples were excluded from a 2008 civil uni.
Opinion polls indicate that most Greeks support same-sex marriage but oppose surrogacy.
Under the Greek constitution, single parents, regardless of gender, have been allowed to adopt since 1946 -- but until now the second partner in a same-sex union was left out of the process.
Under the previous Syriza government, Greece in 2015 legalised civil unions for same-sex couples, one of the last countries in the European Union to do so.
That law had resolved property and inheritance issues but made no provision for the adoption of children.

The ship reported a mechanical problem at 7 am Sunday, sent a distress signal at 8:20 am and shortly after disappeared about 4 1/2 nautical miles (8 kilometres) southwest of Lesbos, authorities said.
A dead crew member was retrieved Sunday afternoon and was transported to Lesbos. The body arrived on the island but has not been identified yet, a coast guard spokeswoman told The Associated Press.
One Egyptian was rescued, another Coast Guard spokeswoman told AP earlier Sunday.
She said eight merchant ships, two helicopters and one Greek navy frigate were searching for survivors. Three coast guard vessels had difficulty reaching the area because of rough seas, she added. Greek firefighters on Wednesday struggled to contain uncontrolled fires throughout the country for a fifth day, several of them bordering an acrid, smoke-filled Athens.
In the last two days, 19 people believed to be migrants -- including two children -- have been killed in forest blazes.
One fire fanned by strong winds ripped through the foothills of Mount Parnitha, the largest forest adjoining the capital, burning near the outskirts of a national park.
"The situation in Parnitha is extremely critical," Civil Protection Minister Vassilis Kikilias told a news conference.
Evacuations were ordered on Wednesday morning for several settlements in the area, including three nursing homes.
The blaze damaged homes in the northwestern Athens district of Menidi, which is also close to a military camp.
"Many people don't want to leave their homes," Nikos Kountromichalis, a Hellenic Red Cross organiser, told state TV ERT in Menidi.
"We found some elderly people who had fainted in their own yards," he said, adding that his team had treated several residents for burns and respiratory problems.
Fires have already destroyed homes and properties in the nearby suburbs of Hasia and Fyli.
A migrant detention centre in Amygdaleza, north of Athens, was also evacuated.
Greek firefighters have battled over 350 fires over the last five days, including over 200 in the last 48 hours, Kikilias said.
"It's an unprecedented situation, this is not a figure of speech," he said.
Kikilias said the country was going through the worst summer of fires since fire-risk maps were introduced in 2009.
He noted that the number of fire emergency warnings issued this year were "twice as many as in 2021, four times those of 2019 and seven times those of 2012," he said.
"In 32 years of service I've never seen such extreme conditions," Greek fire department chief Yiorgos Pournaras told reporters, noting that even during the night winds remained high.
The Parnitha fire had spread even though water bombers were on-site in minutes, Pournaras said.

Civil protection ordered the evacuation of Ano Liosia in northwest Athens, a district of over 25,000 people while at the neighbouring community of Fyli an AFP journalist saw homes on fire.
Over 60 fires have erupted in the past 24 hours, and six countries were sending help via the European Union's civil protection mechanism, the fire department said, amid a dangerous mix of gale-force winds and temperatures of up to 41 degrees Celsius.
"The situation is unprecedented, weather conditions are extreme," fire department spokesman Yiannis Artopios told state TV ERT, adding that the Tuesday fires "grew to gigantic size" in a short space of time.
The fire is burning the lower slopes of Mount Parnitha, the largest forest bordering Athens, which has been burned several times.
Another big blaze was still raging at a landfill in the industrial zone of Aspropyrgos, west of Athens, covering the area in a noxious black cloud.
Over 40,000 hectares were destroyed in wildfires the three days from August 19 to 21, according to a report by the National Observatory of Athens.
Earlier on Tuesday, eighteen suspected migrants were found dead in a forest fire near the Turkish border, north of the city of Alexandroupolis. Two children were among them, a police official said.
As no local residents had been reported missing "the possibility that they are people who entered our country illegally is under investigation," fire department spokesman Yiannis Artopios said in a televised address.
The area is a frequent entry point for irregular migrants.
Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou expressed her deep sorrow.
&ldquo;We must urgently take effective initiatives to ensure that this bleak reality does not become the new normality,&rdquo; she said in a statement.
The latest deaths pushed the overall toll from this week's fires to 20.
Another suspected migrant was found dead in the area and an elderly shepherd was found dead north of Athens on Monday.
"Greece is witnessing an unprecedented scale of wildfire devastation this summer and in such trying times the EU's swift assistance is vital," Janez Lenarčič, Commissioner for Crisis Management, said in a statement.
&nbsp;The lower slopes of &nbsp;Mount Parnitha, the largest forest bordering Athens, was ablaze, having already fallen victim to wildfires several times.
Officials shut down the nearest section of the Athens ring road and advised residents to stay indoors.
Flames continued to spread unchecked in northeastern Greece as well as the islands of Evia and Kythnos, the region of Boeotia north of Athens, in the Peloponnese and in western Greece.
Late Monday, an evacuation was ordered at the hospital of Alexandroupolis, a northeastern Greek port city located in an area where fires were raging for a fourth day.
The coastguard said it had moved 65 patients to a waiting ferry at the city harbour.
The fire near Alexandroupolis is also threatening the national park of Dadia, home to rare birds of prey.
On the island of Evia, near the capital, officials late Monday evacuated the industrial town of Nea Artaki, where the fire has damaged poultry and pork farms.
The very hot and dry conditions which increase the fire risk will persist until Friday, according to meteorologists.
Amid a heatwave, a fire that started on July 18 and was fanned by strong winds ravaged almost 17,770 hectares (more than 43,000 acres) in 10 days in the south of Rhodes, a popular tourist island in the southeastern Aegean Sea.
Around 20,000 people, mostly tourists, had to be evacuated.

Over 19,000 tourists were evacuated from the island, with most being from the United Kingdom. While details were not offered now, Mitsotakis said the vacations may be for a week.
The Greek PM made the announcement on &lsquo;Good Morning Britain&rsquo;, a popular chat show in the United Kingdom.&nbsp;
&ldquo;The Greek government in cooperation with local authorities will offer one week of free holidays on Rhodes, next spring or next fall, so that we make sure they come back to the island,&rdquo; he said.

The plane was among at least three other aircraft and around a hundred firefighters in the fight against the flames on Evia.
The accident occurred as Greece battled wildfires on three major fronts, including the tourist islands of Rhodes and Corfu, with many of the country's regions listed at extreme risk of dangerous forest fires exacerbated by strong winds.

Wind gusts of up to 49 kilometres (31 miles) per hour were complicating efforts to bring the flames under control.
The island of Rhodes is one of Greece's most popular tourist destinations, particularly with British, German and French tourists -- many of whom were being rapidly moved out of the path of the flames.
As Greece has been battered by an extended spell of extreme heat, flames have burned for nearly a week on the island. Temperatures, which reached 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit) in central Greece on Sunday, were expected to dip on Monday before the mercury rises again for another four-day heatwave.
"This is the biggest fire evacuation ever in Greece," Konstantia Dimoglidou, Greek police spokeswoman told AFP.
"We had to evacuate an area of 30,000 people."
Police said that authorities had transported some 16,000 people across land, with 3,000 evacuated by sea, and others fleeing by road or under their own transport after being told to leave the area.
German travel giant Tui said it was suspending all of its inbound passenger flights to Rhodes until Tuesday but would fly in empty planes to help evacuate tourists.
Spokesperson Linda Jonczyk told AFP that Tui had some 40,000 tourists in Rhodes, of which 7,800 are affected by the fires.
The low-cost British carrier Jet2 also said it had cancelled "all flights and holidays" to the island.
One German tourist told the Bild daily that they were "saved from the fire at the last moment" after returning from the beach on Saturday to a deserted hotel.
"We had embers flying around our heads and no help was in sight," said 23-year-old Paul from Bielefeld.
"I had the feeling of being on my own, it was so hot and the smoke was already so thick we couldn't have survived another ten minutes."
He said buses then arrived to evacuate the tourists, but some were so panicked they were trying to find boats to escape on from the beach.
Authorities have warned that the battle to contain the flames -- raging in the middle of peak tourism season -- will take several days.

The teen has been accused of driving away from a fuel station near Thessaloniki without paying. Police claimed that the youth tried to ram officers who were pursuing his vehicle.
The officer who shot him was suspended from duty and arrested.
Subsequently, around 1,500 people took out a violent protest march, attacking shops and throwing Molotov cocktails. Police used tear gas and stun grenades to stop the mob, but didn't arrest anyone.

No injuries were reported.
Earlier in the day, similar scenes were witnessed outside the hospital where the teenager is being treated. His family and other protestors allegedly threw stones at riot police stationed outside the hospital.

Quoting the Greek police, BBC report said an investigation by them and officials from the EU border agency Frontex, found evidence that the migrants crossed the Evros river into Greek territory in rubber dinghies from Turkey.&nbsp;

A breakthrough in IVF treatments has recently made the impossible possible. A woman in Greece gave birth to a baby using genetic material from 3 people- 2 women, and a man. Using a technique called maternal spindle transfer, in which maternal DNA is put into the egg of a donor woman, which is then fertilised using the father’s sperm, the infertile woman was able to give birth to a healthy baby. A Spanish company called Embryotools collaborated with fertility specialists at a clinic in Athens called the Institute of Life to accomplish this task.
