He dropped out of a college course in journalism and French in Dublin after one year to concentrate on an already promising political career.

Simon Harris, who is set to become Ireland's youngest-ever prime minister after being appointed party leader on Sunday, will be hoping his social media skills and fresh face can save his party's flagging fortunes as elections loom.
The 37-year-old, who the media has already dubbed the "TikTok Taoiseach" -- the name for the Irish prime minister, pronounced "Tee-shock" -- beats the previous record holder, his predecessor Leo Varadkar, who was 38 when he took the top job in 2017.
After Varadkar's shock resignation Wednesday, Harris jumped into the race to lead the centre-right Fine Gael party and become prime minister by default.
By Thursday lunchtime he had secured the endorsements of a majority of his party colleagues, prompting all other rivals to rule themselves out, and his coronation was confirmed on Sunday.
Harris told party members that he would repay their faith with "hard work, with blood, sweat and tears, day in and day out with responsibility, with humility and with civility".
His focus would be on "law and order", crafting a "more planned and sustainable" immigration policy and fighting "against the dangers of populism", said the incoming leader.
<h3>Meteoric rise</h3>
Harris's inevitable election as taoiseach when the Dail -- the Irish parliament -- returns from recess on April 9 crowns a meteoric ascent.
Born in 1986, he grew up in the small coastal town of Greystones near Dublin, the son of a taxi driver.
He dropped out of a college course in journalism and French in Dublin after one year to concentrate on an already promising political career.
Harris entered politics by campaigning for autism services for his autistic younger brother, and later founded a charity.
He joined Fine Gael's youth wing at the age of 16 and quickly rose through the party's ranks.
A county councillor aged 22, he was elected to parliament as a 24-year-old in 2011 -- at the time the youngest MP and titled "Baby of the Dail".
He was appointed health minister in 2016, aged just 29.
"In many ways, my career has been a bit odd... life came at me a lot faster than I expected it to," he told Hot Press magazine in a 2022 interview.
Harris served as health minister for more than four years, including during the Covid pandemic -- in which his communication skills were praised despite heavy criticism over nursing home deaths and occasional gaffes.
He can be an "awful old idiot at times" he said, after remarking that Covid-19 refers to 18 previous coronaviruses rather than the year it first occurred.
Harris was also embroiled in controversy over new hospital projects, while a threatened no-confidence vote by the opposition over overcrowding in wards led Varadkar to call a 2020 election in which Fine Gael slumped to third place.
<h3>Social media savvy</h3>
A father-of-two and married to a cardiac nurse, Harris's prominence on social media, especially TikTok, has made him one of the most visible politicians in Ireland.
He has been higher education minister since 2020 and even critics concede he is a talented communicator.
With 1.4 million "likes" on TikTok, and hundreds of thousands of followers on both X and Instagram, Harris posts content almost daily to his audience.
But some of his videos and remarks have been seen as trying too hard to appeal to the younger generation.
During a stormy parliamentary committee meeting, Harris told the group: "Chillax &ndash;- I think everyone needs to take a step back here".
"All the young people know what 'chillax' is," he said in parliament the next day.
With his youth and slick communication skills his opponents jibe that he is "Leo 2.0", a continuation of a "metropolitan" style of politics that is out of touch with the wider electorate.
But for supporters, his enthusiasm could re-energise Fine Gael which still trails third in polls 10 weeks before local and European Parliament elections, and within a year from a general election.
"He has huge energy and huge ambition," one party colleague told the Irish Times paper.
"He's cute, crafty, and shrewd," said another.

Leo Varadkar on Wednesday announced that he was stepping down as Ireland's prime minister and leader of the Fine Gael party in the governing coalition, citing "personal and political" reasons.
Pundits called the surprise move, just 10 weeks before Ireland holds European Parliament and local elections, a "political earthquake". A general election also has to be held within a year.
Deputy Prime Minister Micheal Martin, leader of Fianna Fail, the main coalition partner, said Varadkar's announcement was "unexpected" but added that he expected the government to run its full term.
An emotional Varadkar, who is in his second stint as prime minister and at 45 remains one of Europe's youngest leaders, said he felt he was no longer the "best person" to lead the country.
"Politicians are human beings. We have our limitations," he said in a statement on the steps of Government Buildings in Dublin, surrounded by his Fine Gael cabinet colleagues.
"We give it everything until we can't anymore and then we have to move on."
Despite recent poor showings at the ballot box, Varadkar insisted that he believed the government could be re-elected.
But he added: "I believe a new taoiseach (prime minister) will be better placed than me to achieve that -- to renew and strengthen the top team, to refocus our message and policies, and to drive implementation."
"After seven years in office, I am no longer the best person for that job," he said.
"My reasons for stepping down now are personal and political, but mainly political," he said, without elaborating.
Earlier this month, Varadkar was widely blamed for a twin defeat, including the biggest-ever referendum loss by a government, on proposals to reform references to women, the family and care in the Irish constitution.
Varadkar said his centre-right Fine Gael party would have a leadership contest, and that he would remain as premier until the new leader is elected, after parliament returns from recess next month.
Varadkar first became prime minister in June 2017. He was the youngest person to ever hold the office, Ireland's first openly gay prime minister, and the first from an ethnic minority background.
He stepped down as part of a deal with opposition parties after his party's poor performance in the 2020 general election, but took over for a second time in 2022 as part of the same agreement.

Opting to bat, Afghanistan's first innings had lasted just 54.5 overs, folding up for 155 with Adair returning with his maiden five-wicket haul, taking advantage of the swinging conditions at the Tolerance Oval here.
He was ably supported by Craig Young (2/31), Curtis Campher (2/13) and Barry McCarthy (1/28).
If not for the patient opening knock of 53 by Ibrahim Zadran and the resistance shown by Karim Janat (41 not out) towards the end, Afghanistan would have ended up with a much lower first-innings score.
In reply, Ireland stuttered at the start before Campher (49) and Harry Tector (32) stabilised the innings.
Despite a brief comeback by Afghanistan, Ireland's middle and lower order put up a solid performance. Aided by mature knocks from Paul Stirling (52), Lorcan Tucker (46) and Andy McBrine (38) Ireland made 263, giving them a handy first-innings lead of 108 runs.
In reply, Afghanistan managed 218 runs in the second innings with Adair and McCarthy claiming three wickets each to set an easy 111-run target.
Afghanistan's top and middle order offered some resistance with crucial knocks from captain Hashmatullah Shahidi (55) and Rahmanullah Gurbaz (46). But Adair removed Shahidi and, along with McCarthy and Craig Young, strangled the scoring rate, returning with 3/24.
Afghanistan, however, reduced Ireland to 13/3, thanks to a stunning opening spell from Naveed Zadran (2/31) and Nijat Masood (1/27).
But Balbirnie held fort in his two-hour knock, combining first with Paul Stirling (14) and then with Lorcan Tucker (27 not out) to eke out the win with two days to spare.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) had on June 22, 2017 confirmed Ireland as Full Member, according them the Test status. But since then, the team has lost seven matches -- twice to England and Sri Lanka, and one each to Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
Incidentally, Afghanistan had also secured their first win in Tests against Ireland in 2019.

Claiming the injury had made her incapable to play with her children,&nbsp; the woman also told the court that she was left with a disabling condition.&nbsp;
However, her story was bust her when the insurance firm showed a picture of her published in a national newspaper in which Kamila is seen winning a Christmas tree-throwing competition in 2018.&nbsp;
While dismissing the claim, the judge said, "It is a very large, natural Christmas tree, and it is being thrown by her in a very agile movement. I&rsquo;m afraid I cannot but conclude the claims were entirely exaggerated. On that basis, I propose to dismiss the claim."
In her response, Kamila refuted that she has faked her injuries for the money, claiming that she was "trying to live a normal life," and despite experiencing the pain, she tried looking cheerful.&nbsp;
The court also viewed a video of her training her dog in a park for an hour. The court, ultimately, rejected her claim.&nbsp;

Ireland's prime minister on Friday condemned anti-immigrant protesters who rampaged through central Dublin after three young children were stabbed, saying the rioters simply wanted to cause chaos, not protect the country's way of life.
Police arrested 34 people overnight after up to 500 people looted shops, set fire to vehicles and threw rocks at crowd control officers equipped with helmets and shields. The violence began after rumours circulated that a foreign national was responsible for the attack outside a Dublin school on Thursday afternoon.
Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said Ireland's capital had endured two attacks &mdash; one on innocent children and the other on &ldquo;our society and the rule of law.&rdquo; &ldquo;These criminals did not do what they did because they love Ireland, they did not do what they did because they wanted to protect Irish people, they did not do it out of any sense of patriotism, however warped,&rdquo; Varadkar told reporters on Friday morning.
&ldquo;They did so because they're filled with hate, they love violence, they love chaos, and they love causing pain to others.&rdquo; A 5-year-old girl was in critical condition at a Dublin hospital and a teacher's aide was in serious condition, police said. A 6-year-old girl continues to receive treatment for less serious injuries and another child was discharged overnight. The alleged assailant, who was tackled by witnesses, remains hospitalized in serious condition.
The head of Ireland's national police force, Commissioner Drew Harris, said one officer was seriously injured in clashes with the rioters, some armed with metal bars and covering their faces.
Harris described the protesters as a &ldquo;complete lunatic hooligan faction driven by far-right ideology.&rdquo; Police said over 400 officers, including many in riot gear, were deployed throughout the city centre to contain the unrest. A cordon was set up around the Irish Parliament building, Leinster House, and mounted officers were dispatched to nearby Grafton Street.
&ldquo;These (riots) are scenes that we have not seen in decades, but what is clear is that people have been radicalized through social media and the internet,'' Harris told reporters on Friday.
&ldquo;But I don't want to lose focus on the terrible event in terms of the dreadful assault on schoolchildren and their teacher,'' he said. &ldquo;There's a full investigation ongoing. There's also a full investigation in respect on the disorder.&rdquo;

Ireland then went on to host Team India twice in a two-match T20I series in 2018 and 2022 which were held at the same venue here.
The Paul Stirling-led side's wicketkeeper-batter Lorcan Tucker said they are aware of the big challenge and looking forward to make a big impression.
"Malahide generates a special feeling, especially when a big team comes to town," Tucker was quoted saying in Cricket Ireland website.
"We know India may have a good deal of support, but to have such a big crowd -- it's brilliant for cricket in Ireland," he added.
"The team are quite experienced with these bigger games. We've played in World Cups; we&rsquo;ve played against India before. We know what it's like when these big pressure games come around." Tucker knows what India brings to the table.
"They are the showpiece of the summer for fans in Ireland. We just want to make an impression, stay nice and relaxed and play with confidence. That's our main motto going forward." "We've had a lot of cricket this year. We&rsquo;ve been very well prepped, especially in T20 cricket. We&rsquo;ve come off a decent run there in Scotland where we managed to qualify for next year&rsquo;s World Cup, so I think everyone's feeling excited," he added.
The series will mark the return of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah who will be back to lead India after an injury layoff of about one year.
His recurring back injury has ruled Bumrah out since India's home series against Australia in September last year in the build-up to the T20 World Cup.
Bumrah will be leading a second string side with opener Ruturaj Gaikwad as his deputy.
India under Hardik Pandya lost their last T20I series against the West Indies 3-2 in the Caribbean and the USA.
"We had two great games against India last summer and I think everyone&rsquo;s really looking forward to the big build-up, and the exciting crowd. They&rsquo;re going to come with that energy and it is going to be great," Tucker said.
The 26-year-old is coming from a 93-ball 133 in Lightning&rsquo;s demolition of North West Warriors in an Inter-Provincial Cup game on Monday.
"It was good to be out there for a long period of time and figure out some quirks that haven&rsquo;t been quite right throughout the summer. It's brilliant to get that kind of energy, and that excitement, going into that big series," he said.
