An Indian farm labourer working in Italy died Wednesday after being left by the road following an accident that severed his arm, a minister said, condemning an "act of barbarity".
Satnam Singh was injured on Monday while working on a farm in Latina, a rural area south of Rome that is home to tens of thousands of Indian migrant workers.
"The Indian agricultural worker who suffered a serious accident in the countryside of Latina and was abandoned in very serious conditions... has died," Labour Minister Marina Calderone told parliament.
"It was a true act of barbarity," she said, adding that authorities were investigating, and expressing hope that those who were responsible would be punished.
Singh, who was 30 or 31 and working without legal papers, was cutting hay when his arm was sliced off by a machine, according to the Flai CGIL trade union.
"Instead of being helped by his employers he was dumped like a bag of rubbish near his home," it said, likening the situation to a "horror film".
Police said they had been called by Singh's wife and friends, and an air ambulance was sent.
"He was flown to a hospital in Rome but he died (today) around midday," a police spokesman in Latina told AFP.
The centre-left Democratic Party condemned the man's treatment, in an area known for the exploitation of workers, as a "defeat for civilisation".
"The fight against gangmasters and for dignified and human living and working conditions must continue to be our priority," it said on X.

Dozens of people raised their arms in the fascist salute and shouted a fascist chant during ceremonies Sunday to honor Italian dictator Benito Mussolini on the 79th anniversary of his execution.
Dressed in black, the neo-fascist supporters marched through northern Italian towns where Mussolini was arrested and executed at the end of World War II, and also in Predappio, Mussolini's birthplace and final resting place.
Mussolini was stopped by anti-fascist partisans in Dongo, on the shores of Lake Como, on April 27, 1945, as he tried to escape with his lover, Clara Petacci, following the Allied liberation of Italy.
On Sunday, a group of neo-fascists marched through Dongo and placed 15 roses in the lake in memory of the ministers and officials from the Mussolini government who were killed there, according to video of the event by LaPresse news agency.
The partisans executed Mussolini and Petacci the following day in the nearby lakeside town of Mezzegra-Giulino, where commemorations were also held Sunday. After a rendition of Taps, the leader of the commemorations shouted &ldquo;Camerade Benito Mussolini,&rdquo; and the crowd responded with a strong-armed fascist salute and chant of &ldquo;present.&rdquo; Several police trucks separated the demonstrators in Dongo from hundreds of protesters who sang the famous partisan song &ldquo;Bella Ciao&rdquo; during the ceremony.
The anniversary of Mussolini's execution fell on the same day that Premier Giorgia Meloni was leading her far-right Brothers of Italy party in an election rally in the city of Pescara. Brothers of Italy traces its roots to the Italian Social Movement, which was founded in 1946 by a chief of staff in Mussolini's last government and drew fascist sympathizers and officials into its ranks after Mussolini's fall.
Meloni, who joined the MSI's youth branch as a teenager, has tried to distance her party from its neo-fascist roots. She has condemned fascism's suppression of democracy and insisted that the Italian right handed fascism over to history decades ago. On Sunday, Meloni accused the left of being more of a totalitarian threat to Italy today.
She noted that Communist Party members had made a formal complaint about the tent structures built on the Pescara beachfront to host the Brothers of Italy rally, during which Meloni announced she would head the party's campaign ahead of European Parliament elections in June.
&ldquo;I note that the Communist Party still exists, and I say so to show where the nostalgics for totalitarianism are in Italy today,&rdquo; she said.&nbsp;

The cause of the blast at Enel Green Power's (EGP) Bargi plant on Lake Suviana near Bologna remains unclear.
EGP's chief executive, Salvatore Bernabei, said in an interviews published Friday that any speculation was "premature", saying it would take time to understand a "very complex" situation.
But he rejected any suggestion there had been safety issues at the plant.
Speaking to Corriere della Sera newspaper, Bernabei said works to "technologically update" the plant had started in September 2022 and involved "leading companies in the sector".
The company said earlier this week that "efficiency works" had been entrusted to three primary companies, Siemens, ABB and Voith.

The woman, identified as Barbara Ioele, claimed to have her last pregnancy in December last year. Police followed the woman for nine months and concluded that the pregnancy was staged.
Ioele also allegedly waddled while walking and tied pillows to her belly to convince people she was pregnant, as per Metro UK.
Her husband, identified as Davide Pizzinato, confessed to his wife&rsquo;s scam and said she &ldquo;full well&rdquo; knew that she was not pregnant, the outlet reported.

Giorgia Meloni, Italian Prime Minister, has indicated to her Chinese counterpart, Li Qiang, that Italy intends to withdraw from China's ambitious Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), according to Bloomberg.
Meloni signalled the intent to pull out of the pact during a meeting on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in New Delhi, while expressing the desire to maintain friendly ties with China, the report added.
Besides, the meeting between Meloni and Li is significant as Italy has publicly expressed its intention to exit the BRI, citing a lack of benefits for Rome from Beijing's extensive infrastructure program.

It did not give the length of the contract with 64-year-old Spalletti but Italian media reported his deal ran until after the 2026 World Cup.
&ldquo;We welcome Spalletti,&rdquo; FIGC president Gabriele Gravina said. &ldquo;The national team needed a great coach and I am very happy that he has accepted the role of being in charge of the Azzurri.
&ldquo;His enthusiasm and his competence will be fundamental for the challenges that await Italy in the upcoming months.&rdquo;
The federation also said in its short statement that Spalletti&rsquo;s official presentation will take place when Italy meets up for next month&rsquo;s qualifiers.
Spalletti left Napoli after steering it to its first league title in 33 years. He said at the time that he was taking a sabbatical year and added he could be open to coaching a national team after his year off.
Mancini&rsquo;s resignation provided an opportunity earlier than expected.
However, when Spalletti left Napoli he signed a document that included a clause of three million euros ($3.3 million) to be paid if he returned to work within a year of his contract.
Federation lawyers maintain it is a sort of non-compete clause and counts only for clubs that are rivals to Napoli. But Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has remained equally firm that it also applied to the national team.
&ldquo;I asked for guarantees that (Spalletti) would respect this sabbatical, including a penalty in the event of his commitment wavering,&rdquo; De Laurentiis said in a recent statement. &ldquo;(The FIGC) should not be put off by having to pay one million euros per year on the coach&rsquo;s behalf to free him from his contractual obligations (a commitment not only to Napoli, but also to the club&rsquo;s millions of fans). This is all incoherent.
&ldquo;Admittedly, three million euros is not a lot to Napoli and even less to me, but the question in this case is not about the &lsquo;almighty dollar,&rsquo; but a matter of principle instead.&rdquo;

He added that more evaluation was needed to determine "the incidence of the levels on the ability of the subject&rdquo; to pilot the boat.
