The security situation in Bangladesh has been difficult following the ouster of the former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby said.

President Joe Biden is closely monitoring the situation in Bangladesh and the US will hold the country's interim government accountable for ensuring the protection of religious and ethnic minorities, the White House has said.
The security situation in Bangladesh has been difficult following the ouster of the former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby said.
"And we have been working closely with the interim government to enhance the capability of their law enforcement and security services to deal with the challenge," Kirby said at a news conference on Thursday.
Hasina was ousted as prime minister in the face of a massive anti-government protest in August.
There have been a spate of incidents of violence against Hindus and other minorities, as well as attacks on temples in the last few weeks in Bangladesh.
"We&rsquo;ve been very clear in our engagement with all Bangladeshi leaders that protection of religious and ethnic minorities is absolutely critical, and the leaders of the interim government have repeatedly committed to providing security to all Bangladeshis, regardless of religion or ethnicity," he said.
"We want to hold them to that," Kirby said in response to a question.
Over the past few weeks, Indian Americans have held peaceful protests and marches in several cities, including in front of the White House, in Chicago, New York, SFO, Detroit, Houston and Atlanta, urging Biden to help stop alleged brutalities against the minority Hindu community in Bangladesh.
Earlier in the day, Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi urged members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to address the issue of violence against minorities, primarily Hindus, in Bangladesh during the confirmation hearing of Senator Marco Rubio for the position of secretary of state.
President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Senator Rubio for the top diplomatic position. The date of his confirmation hearing has not been announced yet.
"As targeted violence against Hindus and other minorities continues amid the disorder in Bangladesh, I urge the members of the Senate's Committee on Foreign Relations to address this crisis directly during the upcoming hearings to confirm Senator Rubio as the next US secretary of state," Krishnamoorthi said.
Over the weekend, a large number of Indian-Americans held a march from the White House to the US Capitol over alleged attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh.
Raising slogans like &ldquo;We want Justice&rdquo; and &ldquo;Protect Hindus&rdquo;, the demonstrators urged the Biden administration and the incoming Trump administration to ask the new government in Bangladesh to take steps to protect Hindus and also initiate action against those responsible for this.
"The Bangladeshi Hindu community and the larger Hindu diaspora from the Indian subcontinent have come in support of the Bangladesh Hindu community because there is continuing violence going on in Bangladesh, specifically in Chittagong and Rangpur area, as well as in some other parts of the country," said Utsav Chakrabarti of HinduACTion.

President Biden provided clemency to nearly 1,500 individuals, highlighting justice reform and rehabilitation. This included significant cases like Sachdeva and Patel, challenging outdated sentencing guidelines for non-violent crimes.

"That is why, today, I am pardoning 39 people who have shown successful rehabilitation and have shown commitment to making their communities stronger and safer. I am also commuting the sentences of nearly 1,500 people who are serving long prison sentences &ndash; many of whom would receive lower sentences if charged under today's laws, policies, and practices,&rdquo; he said.
This was the largest single-day act of clemency in recent times.
In December 2012, Dr Meera Sachdeva was sentenced to 20 years in prison and ordered to repay nearly USD8.2 million for fraud at a former Mississippi cancer centre she ran. She is now 63.
Babubhai Patel was sentenced to 17 years on 26 convictions for a healthcare fraud conspiracy, a drug conspiracy, and related fraud and drug violations in 2013.
Also in 2013, Krishna Mote, 54, was sentenced to serve life in prison after he was convicted of conspiracy to distribute more than 280 grams of crack cocaine and more than 500 grams of cocaine, and distribution of crack cocaine as an aider and abettor.
Vikram Dutta, 63, was in January 2012 sentenced in a Manhattan federal court to 235 months in prison after he was found guilty of conspiracy charges stemming from his use of his perfume distribution business to launder millions of dollars for a Mexican narcotics organisation.

The document includes four broad recommendations: improving US government interagency cooperation, speeding up the sharing of information with allies about the four adversaries, calibrating the US government's use of sanctions and other economic tools for maximum effectiveness, and bolstering preparation to manage simultaneous crises involving the adversaries.

&ldquo;I can respond to all this by saying clearly and unequivocally: I wouldn&rsquo;t be running again if I did not absolutely believe I was the best person to beat Donald Trump in 2024,&rdquo; asserted the president, who after his June 27 disastrous debate performance has been receiving calls to drop out of the race.
Biden has insisted that he is in the race and he will not give up.
So far only a small section of the Democratic leadership have asked him to leave the race to the presidency.
A majority of the party leadership has been supporting him so far. He has conceded that it was a bad night, but insists that one 90-minute debate cannot wash away his three-and-half years of performance that revived the economy, reduced unemployment and restored America&rsquo;s position in the world.

&ldquo;The voters &ndash; and the voters alone &ndash; decide the nominee of the Democratic Party. How can we stand for democracy in our nation if we ignore it in our own party? I cannot do that. I will not do that,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;The question of how to move forward has been well-aired for over a week now. And it&rsquo;s time for it to end. We have one job. And that is to beat Donald Trump. Any weakening of resolve or lack of clarity about the task ahead only helps Trump and hurts us,&rdquo; Biden wrote.
"I want you to know that despite all the speculation in the press and elsewhere, I am firmly committed to staying in this race, to running this race to the end, and to beating Donald Trump,&rdquo; Biden wrote in the letter.
On Sunday, at least five Democratic lawmakers expressed their view on Sunday that President Joe Biden should step down from the US presidential election scheduled for November 5, according to multiple news reports.
The lawmakers -- Jerry Nadler, Mark Takano, Joe Morelle, Ted Lieu and Adam Smith -- expressed their view in this regard during a Democratic Party phone call organised to discuss Biden's disastrous debate performance against Trump, in Atlanta on June 27.
Biden's approval ratings have come down and his own party colleagues have started questioning his health and ability to govern the country for the next four years. Biden has asserted that he is staying in the race and exuded confidence that he will win the election against Trump in November.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries had convened a virtual meeting of his party colleagues in the House of Representatives to discuss the evolving political scenarios after the June 27 presidential debate between Biden and Trump.
The virtual meeting was billed as a "listening session" to get inputs from members about the viability of Biden's candidacy, "The New York Times" reported, adding that it was clear before the call that many top Democrats felt strongly that Biden had to go.
Congressman Smith, the ranking member of the Armed Services Committee, said it is time for Biden to go, according to two people familiar with the call, the daily reported. The four other Congressmen also felt the same and believed it was time for Biden to exit the race.
"Lieu was the highest-ranking person in the House Democratic leadership to support pressing for Biden to not seek reelection," "The Washington Post" reported.
"The developments opened a wide crack in Biden's wall of support, bringing the number of House Democrats publicly or privately saying he should step aside to about 10. They included the top Democrats on the Judiciary, Armed Services and Intelligence committees. The defections cast further doubts on Biden's path forward, even as he largely controls his own fate thanks to sweeping the Democratic presidential primaries," "The Wall Street Journal" reported.

Even before the debate, Biden's age had been a liability with voters, and Thursday night's faceoff appeared to reinforce the public's deep-seated concerns before perhaps the largest audience he will garner in the four months until Election Day.
Privately, his campaign worked to tamp down concerns and keep donors and surrogates on board. Democratic lawmakers on Friday acknowledged Biden's poor showing, but tried to stop talk of replacing him as their standard-bearer, and instead shift the focus to Trump's attacks and falsehoods.

Roy Cooper told The Associated Press on Friday, hours before he introduced the president in Raleigh. &ldquo;We cannot send Donald Trump back to the White House. He's an existential threat to our nation." Former President Barack Obama backed up his former vice president, posting on X that &ldquo;Bad debate nights happen." Alluding to his own poor showing in the first debate of his reelection campaign in 2012, Obama continued, &ldquo;Trust me, I know. But this election is still a choice between someone who has fought for ordinary folks his entire life and someone who only cares about himself.&rdquo; He added: &ldquo;Last night didn't change that, and it's why so much is at stake in November.&rdquo; House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries answered with a flat &ldquo;no&rdquo; when asked Friday if Biden should step aside.
Rep. Ritchie Torres, D-N.Y., allowed he "had to take a few more antidepressants than usual&rdquo; after Biden's debate showing.
But he added that "a Donald Trump presidency would cause me far greater discomfort than a Joe Biden debate performance.&rdquo; Biden's campaign billed the Raleigh event as the largest-yet rally of his reelection bid in the state Trump carried by the narrowest margin in 2020. He then traveled to New York for a weekend of big-dollar fundraisers that his campaign now needs more than ever.
Biden's campaign announced that it raised $14 million on debate day and the morning after, while Trump's campaign said it raised more than $8 million from the start of the debate through the end of the night.
Vice President Kamala Harris, whom the Biden campaign sent out to defend his performance, tried to reassure Biden supporters at a rally in Las Vegas on Friday, saying, &ldquo;This race will not be decided by one night in June.
&ldquo;This race will be decided by you. By us,&rdquo; she said. "Who sits in the White House next year will be determined by what we together do in these next 130 days.&rdquo; Biden campaign communications director Michael Tyler said there had been no internal conversations &ldquo;whatsoever&rdquo; about Biden stepping aside, though he, too, acknowledged that the president had a &ldquo;bad night&rdquo; on stage.
Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, D-Mo., said he could hardly sleep because of the number of telephone calls he got after Biden performed &ldquo;horribly&rdquo; in the debate.
&ldquo;People were just concerned. And I told everybody being concerned is healthy, overreacting is dangerous,&rdquo; Cleaver said.
Rep. James Clyburn, a South Carolina Democrat whose support in that state helped Biden secure the Democratic nomination four years ago, said he would likely speak to Biden later Friday and his message would be simple: &ldquo;Stay the course.&rdquo; Biden and his team have long wagered that voters would look past their concerns about his age and unpopularity when confronted at the ballot box with a choice between the president and Trump. Despite their concerns about Biden's performance, they took solace in Trump doing little to expand his own appeal to voters on Thursday.
Polls from CNN and 538/Ipsos conducted soon after the debate found that most debate-watchers thought Trump outperformed Biden. But the two men's favorability ratings remained largely unchanged, just as they did in the aftermath of Trump's conviction.
Democrats seized on Trump's equivocations on whether he would accept the will of voters this time around, his refusal to condemn the rioters who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, trying to overturn his 2020 loss to Biden, and his embrace of the conservative-leaning Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v. Wade that had legalized abortion nationwide.
But Biden fumbled on abortion rights, one of the most important issues for Democrats in this year's election. He was unable to explain Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion nationwide. A conservative Supreme Court with three justices nominated by Trump overturned Roe two years ago.
As elected Democrats united behind Biden publicly, donors and party operatives shared panicked text messages and phone calls Thursday night and into Friday expressing their concern that Biden's performance was so bad that he may be unelectable this fall.
Among the few public Democratic voices calling on Biden to step aside was congressional candidate Nancy Boyda in Kansas, who broke with most in her party and called on Biden to suspend his campaign and retire at the end of his current term.
But there were no immediate signs of organized efforts among donors, his campaign leadership or the Democratic National Committee to convince the president to step aside, according to interviews with several people who spoke on the condition of anonymity to share sensitive conversations.
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat frequently mentioned as a 2028 contender and speculated about as a potential replacement for Biden, released a statement backing him on Friday.
&ldquo;The difference between Joe Biden's vision for making sure everyone in America has a fair shot and Donald Trump's dangerous, self-serving plans will only get sharper as we head toward November,&rdquo; she said.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom also dismissed questions on whether he would consider stepping in for Biden, telling reporters, &ldquo;I will never turn my back on him.&rdquo; Under current Democratic Party rules, it would be difficult, if not impossible, to replace Biden as the party's nominee without his cooperation or without party officials being willing to rewrite the rules at the August national convention.

A bombastic Trump lashed out at his successor, calling him a failure on the economy and the world stage.
Biden looked to hit back, but his delivery was faltering as he spoke rapidly in a raspy, trailing-off voice, stumbled on his words and stared open-mouthed.
His performance, after he spent the week secluded in preparation, sparked new concern within his Democratic Party as polls show Trump is tied or ahead for the November election.
It was the first debate ever between a president and former president -- and each accused each other of being history's worst.
Trump and Biden, who were each the oldest president when first elected, even accused each other of being childlike as they argued over their golf swings.
Biden, 81, and Trump, 78, did not shake hands as they walked to their podiums at the CNN headquarters in Atlanta. There was no live audience and their microphones were muted as the other spoke.
Biden hit Trump with clearly rehearsed lines as he sought to remind millions of television viewers that Trump would be the first convicted felon in the White House.
"You have the morals of an alley cat," Biden said.
Trump, a veteran of rallies and reality television, spoke loudly as he ran through a long list of complaints about Biden's record.
"I'm friends with a lot of people. They cannot believe what happened to the United States of America. We're no longer respected," Trump said.
Trump sought to seize on Biden's delivery, saying at one point, "I really don't know what he said at the end of that sentence. I don't think he knows what he said either."
Trump further challenged Biden to take a cognitive test, which he claimed the President would fail.

US President Joe Biden said Friday that Israel had offered a new roadmap towards a permanent peace in Gaza, urging Hamas to accept the surprise deal as it was "time for this war to end."
In his first major address outlining a solution to the conflict, Biden said the three-phase proposal starts with a six-week complete ceasefire that would see Israeli forces withdraw from all populated areas of Gaza.
"It's time for this war to end, for the day after to begin," Biden said in a televised address from the White House.
"Israel has offered a comprehensive new proposal. It's a roadmap to an enduring ceasefire and the release of all hostages," he said.
The 81-year-old Democrat is under pressure at home to bring an end to the Gaza war ahead of a tight US presidential election in November against Donald Trump, with nationwide campus protests and anger in his own party.
Biden said the onus for peace was on the Palestinian militant group Hamas, whose attack on key US ally Israel on October 7 last year trigged the grinding conflict in Gaza.
"Hamas needs to take the deal," said Biden, who has supported Israel with billions of dollars in military aid since the conflict began.
But Biden said he had also urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders not to "lose this moment," saying Israel's offensive had significantly degraded Hamas.
"Hamas no longer is capable of carrying out another October 7," said Biden.
Biden said the first six-week phase would include a "full and complete ceasefire, withdrawal of Israeli forces from all populated areas of Gaza, release of a number of hostages, including women, the elderly, the wounded, in exchange for release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners."
Israel and Hamas would then negotiate during those six weeks for a lasting ceasefire -- but the truce would continue if the talks remained underway, Biden said.
"As long as Hamas lives up to its commitments, a temporary ceasefire would become, in the words of the Israeli proposal, the cessation of hostilities permanently," added Biden.
A third phase would involve years of internationally backed reconstruction.

Biden's address comes after repeated attempts to end the war have stalled.
Netanyahu said after Biden's speech that the Gaza war would not end until the "elimination" of Hamas's capacity to govern and make war.
Hamas, which received the proposal on Wednesday through mediator Qatar, has insisted that any ceasefire should be permanent.
But in a statement, the Palestinian Islamist movement said on Friday it "considers positively" the contents of Biden's speech.
Earlier Friday, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh reiterated that the group's core demands -- including a permanent ceasefire and full Israeli withdrawal -- "are non-negotiable."
A senior US official said however that the new Israeli proposal was "almost identical" to what Hamas itself had offered a few weeks ago -- admitting that there were still "small gaps."
Top US diplomat Antony Blinken called his counterparts from Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey on Friday to press the deal.
Blinken "underscored that the proposal is in the interests of both Israelis and Palestinians, as well as the long-term security of the region," State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said.

Biden did not significantly address Israel's assault on the southern Gaza city of Rafah. The Israeli army said Friday its troops had pushed into the city center despite international objections.
Biden acknowledged however that Palestinians were enduring "sheer hell."
The US president has been under international pressure over his support for Israel since a deadly strike on Rafah set ablaze a crowded camp on Sunday. Gaza officials said 45 people were killed and about 250 wounded.
The White House however said this week that while the Israeli strike was "devastating," it did not breach Biden's red lines for withholding weapons deliveries to the key US ally.

President Joe Biden said Wednesday that he would not supply offensive weapons that Israel could use to launch an all-out assault on Rafah &mdash; the last major Hamas stronghold in Gaza &mdash; over concern for the well-being of the more than 1 million civilians sheltering there.
Biden, in an interview with CNN, said the U.S. was still committed to Israel's defense and would supply Iron Dome rocket interceptors and other defensive arms, but that if Israel goes into Rafah, &ldquo;we're not going to supply the weapons and artillery shells used.&rdquo;
The U.S. has historically provided enormous amounts of military aid to Israel. That has only accelerated in the aftermath of Hamas' Oct. 7 attack that killed some 1,200 in Israel and led to about 250 being taken captive by militants.
Biden's comments and his decision last week to pause a shipment of heavy bombs to Israel are the most striking manifestations of the growing daylight between his administration and Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government.
Biden said Wednesday that Israel's actions around Rafah had &ldquo;not yet&rdquo; crossed his red lines, but has repeated that Israel needs to do far more to protect the lives of civilians in Gaza.
The shipment was supposed to consist of 1,800 2,000-pound (900-kilogram) bombs and 1,700 500-pound (225-kilogram) bombs, according to a senior U.S. administration official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive matter. The focus of U.S. concern was the larger explosives and how they could be used in a dense urban area.
&ldquo;Civilians have been killed in Gaza as a consequence of those bombs and other ways in which they go after population centers," Biden told CNN.
&ldquo;I made it clear that if they go into Rafah &mdash; they haven't gone in Rafah yet &mdash; if they go into Rafah, I'm not supplying the weapons that have been used historically to deal with Rafah, to deal with the cities, that deal with that problem.&rdquo;
&ldquo;We're not walking away from Israel's security," Biden continued.

Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin earlier Wednesday confirmed the weapons delay, telling the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense that the U.S. paused &ldquo;one shipment of high payload munitions.&rdquo;
&ldquo;We're going to continue to do what's necessary to ensure that Israel has the means to defend itself,&rdquo; Austin said.
&ldquo;But that said, we are currently reviewing some near-term security assistance shipments in the context of unfolding events in Rafah.&rdquo;
It also comes as the Biden administration is due to deliver a first-of-its-kind formal verdict this week on whether the airstrikes on Gaza and restrictions on delivery of aid have violated international and U.S. laws designed to spare civilians from the worst horrors of war. A decision against Israel would further add to pressure on Biden to curb the flow of weapons and money to Israel's military.
Biden signed off on the pause in an order conveyed last week to the Pentagon, according to U.S. officials who were not authorized to comment on the matter.
The White House National Security Council sought to keep the decision out of the public eye for several days until it had a better understanding of the scope of Israel's intensified military operations in Rafah and until Biden could deliver a long-planned speech on Tuesday to mark Holocaust Remembrance Day.
Biden's administration in April began reviewing future transfers of military assistance as Netanyahu's government appeared to move closer toward an invasion of Rafah, despite months of opposition from the White House. The official said the decision to pause the shipment was made last week and no final decision had been made yet on whether to proceed with the shipment at a later date.
U.S. officials had declined for days to comment on the halted transfer, word of which came as Biden on Tuesday described U.S. support for Israel as &ldquo;ironclad, even when we disagree.&rdquo; Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, in an interview with Israeli Channel 12 TV news, said the decision to pause the shipment was &ldquo;a very disappointing decision, even frustrating." He suggested the move stemmed from political pressure on Biden from Congress, the U.S. campus protests and the upcoming election.
The decision also drew a sharp rebuke from House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, who said they only learned about the military aid holdup from press reports, despite assurances from the Biden administration that no such pauses were in the works. The Republicans called on Biden in a letter to swiftly end the blockage, saying it &ldquo;risks emboldening Israel's enemies,&rdquo; and to brief lawmakers on the nature of the policy reviews.
Biden has faced pressure from some on the left &mdash; and condemnation from the critics on the right who say Biden has moderated his support for an essential Mideast ally.

However, 49 per cent of the respondents did not believe a civil war was likely, while another 10 per cent of voters were not sure of the outcome.
Interestingly, 37 per cent of the respondents said a civil war is more likely if President Joe Biden were to be re-elected. Another 25 per cent said the opposite, that the scenario would be more likely Donald Trump were to come back to power. &nbsp;
The poll was carried out on April 21-23 among 1,100 respondents who plan to vote in the upcoming presidential elections in the US this year, scheduled to be held on November 5. &nbsp;

&ldquo;He was making a broader point. Our allies and partners know very well that &mdash; how much this president respects them," Jean-Pierre told reporters at her daily news conference on Thursday.
"As you know, in regard to Japan, they were just here for the state visit. The US-Japan relationship is an important relationship. It&rsquo;s a deep, enduring alliance,&rdquo; she said.
"He (Biden) was making a more broad comment, speaking about this country and speaking about how important it is to be a country of immigrants and how it makes our country stronger. And so, that&rsquo;s what he was talking about,&rdquo; she said.
&ldquo;It relates to our relationship with our allies, that continues. Obviously, we have a strong relationship with India (and) with Japan. And the President, if you just look at the last three years, has certainly focused on those diplomatic relationships," Jean-Pierre said.
