China has been sending its citizens to occupy the defence border villages it constructed along the LAC since 2019

China is populating its vacant border villages built along the Line of Control. In the last few months, many Chinese nationals have started moving in at a couple of "defence villages", as it is called, on its side of the border across India's northeastern states, the Indian Express newspaper reported citing sources familiar with the matter.
However, it is unknown whether the occupants residing in these double-storey, large and spacious buildings are civilains or military personnel.
For the past five years, China has been constructing 628 such villages along India&rsquo;s borders with Tibet.
India, too, has been ramping up border infrastructure. Under the Vibrant Villages programmes, India plans to modernise at least 17 villages that share borders with China.

"They were waiting. And that's because the U.S. had given India everything to be fully prepared for this. It demonstrates a test case of the success of how the two militaries are now cooperating and sharing intelligence," an unnamed source was quoted as saying by the daily.

Amid the ongoing military standoff with China on the Line of Actual Control, defence intelligence agencies have issued a strong advisory to units to ensure that the troops are not using Chinese mobile phones, ANI reported.
'Formations and units are to sensitise their personnel through various forms and channels to exercise caution with such (Chinese) mobile phone devices', the advisory issued by the defence intelligence agencies said.
In the advisory, military spy agencies asked the formations to 'discourage troops and their families from purchasing or using phones from countries hostile to India.'
The forces issued the advisory as there have been cases where malware and spyware have allegedly been found in Chinese-origin mobile phones by agencies, the sources said.
The spy agencies have asked the units and formations to &ldquo;carry out the transition to other phones against the phones&rdquo; mentioned in the list attached with the advisory.
The Chinese mobile phones available in the commercial market in the country include Vivo, Oppo, Xiaomi, One Plus, Honor, Real Me, ZTE, Gionee, ASUS and Infinix.

Rahul Gandhi did not send them. Narendra Modi sent them. We have today the largest peacetime deployment in our history on the China border.
We are keeping troops there at a huge cost with great effort. We have increased our infrastructure spending on the border five times in this government. Now tell me who is the defensive and accommodative person? Who is actually telling the truth? Who is depicting things accurately? Who is playing footsie with history?' added Jaishankar in an interview to ANI. Rahul Gandhi had claimed last month that according to a Ladakh delegation 2000 square km of Indian Territory was taken by the Chinese.

According to the government sanction, the fresh manpower will be utilised for manning 47 new border posts and a dozen 'staging camps' or troops bases along this frontier. The armies of India and China are engaged in a standoff in Ladakh since 2020.

&nbsp;The Union Cabinet on Wednesday sanctioned seven new battalions and an operational border base with a fresh strength of 9,400 personnel for the India-China LAC guarding force Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), officials said.
The proposal was cleared after the meeting of the cabinet that was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
According to the government sanction, the fresh manpower will be utilised for manning 47 new border posts and a dozen 'staging camps' or troops bases along this frontier. The armies of India and China are engaged in a standoff in Ladakh since 2020.
The about 90,000 personnel strong ITBP was raised in the aftermath of the 1962 Chinese aggression and it is tasked to guard the 3,488-km-long Line of Actual Control (LAC) on India's eastern flank.

The Army on Tuesday said it was prepared to give an appropriate response to any adverse aggressive designs of China in the Ladakh sector, maintaining that the integrity of the country was being ensured through physical patrolling and technical means.
"On the LAC, our response to Chinese attempts to unilaterally change the status quo was a swift, undaunted and synergised action by the Indian Armed Forces," General officer Commanding in Chief of Army's Northern Command Lt General Upendra Dwivedi said at an investiture ceremony at Badami Bagh Cantonment area here.
"Any adverse aggressive designs or attempts will definitely be met with appropriate posturing of Forces and a strong intent with complete synergy among the three services," he said.
He said measures to resolve Line of Actual Control (LAC) situation at diplomatic and operational levels are also simultaneously underway.
"I assure you that the LAC in Eastern Ladakh is being dominated by physical patrolling and through technical means and our territorial integrity is being ensured," he added.
Lt Gen Dwivedi said the Northern Command is in a high state of readiness and morale to face constantly evolving threats and challenges.
"The security situation in Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh poses many challenges in terrain and operational dynamics, especially from different adversaries along the Northern and Western borders. We are committed to defending India's sovereignty and territorial integrity while upholding the democratic traditions of the Nation. "We are maintaining a constant vigil, monitoring all developments and will take all necessary steps to protect our National Interests," he said.
The Army commander said the Army is prepared to meet any challenges in the future and will always work for the betterment of the people of the region.
"The last two years have brought to the fore newer challenges in the wake of abrogation of Article 370, the Galwan conflict and multiple waves of COVID-19," he said.
"These challenges have only served to strengthen our resolve to be steadfast and determined in our commitment," he added.

India's border dispute with China in Ladakh has been highlighted once again by a police paper, as reported by news outlet NDTV. India has lost access to 26 of 65 patrolling points in Eastern Ladakh, according to the report by a senior police officer in the Union Territory.
The report said that there is "restrictive or no patrolling" by Indian security forces in these areas. This leads to Chinese troops claiming that they were present in the area, while Indian presence has not been seen for a long time.
The report by PD Nitya, Superintendent of Police, Leh, was submitted at the recent conference of top police officials which was also attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The report came a month after Chinese troops attempted aggression in Arunachal Pradesh. They were beaten back in Yangtse area of Tawang sector by Indian forces, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had said.

More than a month after aggression by Chinese soldiers led to a scuffle with Indian troops in Arunachal Pradesh, the chief of the Indian Army visited the region.
General Manoj Pande visited units and formations along the disputed Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Arunachal, the Army said on 23 January 2023. The Army chief was briefed on operational preparedness and the security situation in the region.
General Pande "complimented the troops for maintaining sharp vigil, and exhorted all to continue working with the same zeal and devotion", the force said.
On 9 December 2022, Chinese troops tried to commit transgression at the LAC in Yangtse area of Tawang sector. They were beaten back by Indian soldiers.
"The ensuing face-off led to a physical scuffle in which the Indian Army bravely prevented the PLA from transgressing into our territory and compelled them to return to their posts," Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had said while briefing the Parliament on the incident.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday highlighted India's 'strong and firm' counter-response to China, which tried to unilaterally change the status quo on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in May 2020, amid the Covid-19 pandemic, and more recently in the Tawang sector of Arunachal Pradesh in December, last year.
Speaking at the Tughlaq's 53rd Annual Day Function, the External Affairs minister said, "On the Northern borders, China is seeking to change the status quo by bringing large forces, violating our agreements. Despite Covid, remember, this happened in May 2020. Our counter-response was strong and firm.
He said the Indian forces deployed along the border were continuing to safeguard the frontiers in the most extreme and harshest weather conditions
"These troops deployed in thousands, safeguard our frontiers in the most extreme terrain and harshest weather," he added. Expanding on why India mattered more to the world now, Jaishankar said the world saw in India's response to China that it is "a nation that will not be coerced and will do what it takes to ensure its national security".

Days after revealing that Chinese soldiers tried aggressive manoeuvres in Arunachal Pradesh's Tawang, the Indian government has decided to install more mobile towers in the area to improve connectivity.
BSNL and Bharti Airtel will set up 23 new mobile towers in Tawang. The district administration had reportedly asked for 43 new towers.
"The existing towers were not giving the desired services, causing problems not only for the defence forces but also the civilians living along the border," Tawang Deputy Commissioner KN Damo said.
Earlier, there was no mobile network in the border areas but the situation has changed now with residents enjoying internet service and mobile connectivity even at Bum-La and Y-Junction but more improvement is needed, he added.

The officer said that all preparations are in place for installing the new towers, but winter would pose a challenge, which might get the process delayed.

The Indian Army's assets at the LAC include both airborne and land-based platforms.

China's latest misadventure at the border has confirmed that it wants to keep the disputed boundary with India boiling. However, China's stunts in Ladakh in 2020 have meant that the Indian military has been continuously stepping up its preparedness along the Line of Actual Control.
Let's take a look at some of the most destructive weapons that the Indian Army has placed at hotspots along the China boundary.

One of the newest acquisitions by the Army's Aviation Wing is the LCH Prachand. It is a light combat helicopter whose specialties include high-altitude operations, and attacking enemies on both land and air. It will be placed along the LAC in eastern Ladakh when the first unit is deployed in 2023.

The next explosive weapon is the K-9 Vajra. It is a tracked, self-propelled Howitzer gun. Its special features include its high speed allowing quick deployment. Also, it can destroy targets at up to 50 km in the rarefied air of high-altitude areas. The K-9 Vajra is meant to counter China in Ladakh, Uttarakhand, and the Northeast. It has already been deployed in Ladakh, and the Army reportedly plans to acquire 200 units for the other locations.
Another important weapon in the Army's artillery is the M777, an ultra-light Howitzer gun. Since it is lightweight, it can be easily deployed in hard terrain, and can also be carried by Chinook helicopters. It is strengthening the Army in the eastern sector, with 3 regiments deployed in the Northeast.
To boost its airpower, the Indian Army is also looking at loitering munitions, which are suicide-attack drones. They will give a boost to the Army's capability to track targets and conduct precision strikes. They will be placed along the LAC with China, and the process of procurement is already underway.

For explosive firepower at long distances, the Army has the Pinaka, a multiple rocket launcher system. It can fire a variety of ammunition. Its new version has a longer range and better accuracy. It has been placed along LAC in Northeast, with one regiment deployed in Arunachal Pradesh. The Army reportedly plans to get 6 more.
A major addition to the Army's arsenal in the near future will be the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System, or ATAGS. Its special features include rapid and sustained rates of fire with longer range. It will be deployed along the LAC. The ATAGS is in its final stages of testing and induction is expected soon.
While the Army waits for its newer guns, some legacy weapons are still in use, like the Bofors Howitzer. Its newer version is more precise and faster in firing rounds. In forward areas along the LAC, the upgraded Bofors guns are a big boost for the Army.
The other legacy weapon is the L70, an air defence gun. It has been upgraded for automatic tracking of aerial threats. It has been added to the arsenal along the LAC in the eastern sector. The upgraded guns were deployed around 15 km from the disputed border in 2021.
Apart from firepower, intelligence-gathering is an important task near the hot border. For this, the Army is looking at surveillance drones with a range of 80 km, and endurance of 4 hours. These will improve surveillance in difficult and mountainous terrain along the LAC. The Army is currently assessing different options before acquisition.
The military's arsenal is expected to get deadlier as more and more made-in-India weapons are developed and finalised, like the Dhanush gun system.
Beijing appears to be playing a double-game, trying to continue military aggression, even as both sides sit at the negotiation table. In such a situation, the deployment of potent and effective weapons at the border are a necessary deterrent.

Following Rajnath Singh's statement, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman cited precedent to appeal to the Opposition to not seek a discussion on the issue.

Following his statement in the Lok Sabha, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh briefed members of the Rajya Sabha regarding the violent clash between Indian and Chinese soldiers in Arunachal Pradesh.
The minister said, "On 9 Dec 2022, Chinese PLA troops encroached across LAC in Tawang sector's Yangtse area in an attempt to unilaterally change the status quo. Indian Army bravely prevented PLA from encroaching on Indian territory, and forced them to return to their posts. Some soldiers on both sides suffered some injuries."
Following Rajnath Singh's statement, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman appealed to Opposition to not seek a discussion on the issue.

Harivansh said, "I would like to give some examples from past proceedings of this House. In Session 210, on 6 March 2007, Naxal attack on Sunil Mahato, MP Lok Sabha; in Session 2012, on 26 Nov 2007, serial bomb blasts in UP; in Session 215, on 13 March 2009, follow-up Mumbai terrorist act; in Session 215, on 18 Feb 2009, situation in Sri Lanka - on these sensitive topics, questions and discussions were not allowed. Similarly, on today's issue, I appeal that queries not be taken."
However, Opposition MPs protested the Deputy Chairman's decision by raising slogans like "charcha karo", i.e. have a discussion, and "charcha se kyo darte ho", i.e. why are you scared of a debate.

The Defence Minister confirmed that a few soldiers were injured in the face-off, however, none of the Indian soldiers died or suffered any serious injury.
The Indian and Chinese troops clashed along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Tawang sector of Arunachal Pradesh on December 9 and the face-off resulted in "minor injuries to a few personnel from both sides", the Indian Army said on Monday.
The clash near Yangtse along the LAC in the sensitive sector took place last Friday amid the over 30-month border standoff between the two sides in eastern Ladakh.
Congress MPs have given adjournment notices in both houses of Parliament to discuss the border situation with China.

Speaking at an event in the national capital, ambassador Elizabeth Jones, the newly-appointed US Charge d'Affaires to New Delhi, when asked about China's objection to the India-US military exercise in Auli in Uttarakhand, Jones said "I think I would point it to the kind of statements that we heard from our Indian colleagues to the effect that it is really none of their business."&nbsp;
Jones also added that Washington will support New Delhi's efforts to become more capable in dealing with regional security challenges and that Washington sees its ties with New Delhi as one of our "most consequential relationships''.

Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi called it "another disturbing sign of Beijing&rsquo;s growing regional aggression". He said that the US needs to "reaffirm and strengthen joint efforts with India and other security partners".
As the Chinese Communist Party&rsquo;s domestic repression, brutal persecution of Uyghurs, and online misinformation efforts continue to escalate, so too do the signs of its growing international military aggression stretching from India to the Taiwan Strait, he said.

Krishnamoorthy was reacting to a report in Politico which cited satellite imagery.
"The pictures, obtained by the Centre for Strategic and International Studies&rsquo; China Power project and shared with NatSec Daily, show the People&rsquo;s Liberation Army constructed a headquarters and garrison to house troops at Pangong Tso, a remote lake that stretches across the Line of Actual Control between the two countries,&rdquo; Politico reported.

Maintaining a "higher level of operational preparedness at all time" and improving infrastructure, especially along the northern borders, were some of the key lessons from the eastern Ladakh border standoff, Army Chief General Manoj Pande said on Tuesday.
He said this in response to a question during an interaction held at India Defence Conclave here.
When asked by the host what was the next step after the recent disengagement of Indian and Chinese militaries from Patrolling Point 15 in the Gogra-Hotsprings area in eastern Ladakh, he said, "We have made progress in terms of disengagement from friction points. We still have two friction points where we need to move forward.
"We are hopeful as we move forward, talking through both military and diplomatic levels. And, I am sure we will be able to find resolution towards these friction points. That is our immediate aim to disengage from these friction points, before we look at to next step, of perhaps, de-escalation, which will involve pull back of troops." Asked about the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, the Army chief said, "The situation in J&amp;K is well under control." Also, the abrogation of Article 370 and the kind of "whole of nation approach" adopted have resulted in a "number of positives", he said.
"Besides, violence level has come down significantly. In the hinterland, protests or incidents of stone pelting have reduced,&rdquo; he said, adding that infiltration at LoC has come down.
The eastern Ladakh border standoff erupted on May 5, 2020, following a violent clash in the Pangong lake areas.
Indian and Chinese militaries on September 12 had moved back their frontline troops to the rear locations from the face-off site of Patrolling Point 15 in the Gogra-Hotsprings area in eastern Ladakh and dismantled temporary infrastructure there as part of a five-day disengagement process.
People familiar with the development had said the two sides disengaged as per the plan which also entailed a joint verification of the entire process.
Though the two sides disengaged from Patrolling Point 15, there has been no progress yet on resolving the standoff in Demchok and Depsang regions.
Asked what were the key lessons from the standoff, Gen Pande said, one was to "maintain a higher level of operational preparedness at all time".
"Also, importance of infrastructure development, especially along our northern borders, and I am also referring to areas opposite Arunachal Pradesh or the Eastern Sector, besides Ladakh," he added.
"We also realised that there is adequate scope for infusion of new technology, and that is something we need to leverage, to enhance our abilities to address challenges in the future," the Army chief said.
He said "we need to have a strategy to effectively operate in the grey zone as well, and build our capabilities".
Since May 2020, a significant amount of enhancement in Army's infrastructure, especially in the context of eastern Ladakh, has taken place, Gen Pande said.
The Army is also focussing on "creating infrastructure, road connectivity right up to the border, and have inter-valley connection", he said, in response to another question during the interaction.
