Yadav&rsquo;s endorsement comes after the Trinamool Congress intensified its push for Banerjee&rsquo;s leadership, with MP Kirti Azad calling her the most suitable candidate due to her consistent victories over the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal.
Banerjee, who has expressed interest in heading the alliance, also emphasized her readiness to lead. &ldquo;If given the opportunity, I would ensure its smooth functioning. I don&rsquo;t want to go outside West Bengal, but I can run it from here,&rdquo; Banerjee said in an interview on December 6.
The leadership question has gained prominence following the opposition bloc&rsquo;s electoral setbacks. While many in the alliance, including NCP's Sharad Pawar and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut, have expressed support for Banerjee&rsquo;s leadership, a formal decision is yet to be made.
This isn&rsquo;t the first time Lalu Yadav has backed Banerjee. In a 2023 INDIA bloc meeting ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Yadav criticized Left and Congress leaders in West Bengal for their continuous criticism of the TMC leader.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday addressed the state Assembly, emphasizing the need for communal harmony amid rising tensions over attacks on minorities in Bangladesh. She urged people in the state to avoid provocation and remain united in preserving peace.
Banerjee condemned a controversial statement by a leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) claiming that Bangladesh had "legitimate rights" over Bengal, Bihar, and Odisha. In a sharp rebuttal, she questioned, &ldquo;Are we Indians going to sit and have lollipops when external forces try to occupy our lands?&rdquo;
The Chief Minister stressed the importance of India's territorial integrity and warned against external provocations that could disturb the state's social fabric. &ldquo;We are conscious and active enough to protect our country. But we also test patience because we&rsquo;ve learned it from Rabindranath Tagore,&rdquo; she said, urging citizens to stay calm and united.
Bengal&rsquo;s Solidarity with Bangladesh Minorities
 Banerjee highlighted West Bengal's collective protests against the persecution of minorities in Bangladesh, calling it the first state to take such a stand. She commended imams and other community leaders for publicly condemning the violence and expressing solidarity with affected groups.
&ldquo;The same blood flows in the veins of Hindus and Muslims and all other communities. We must work together to ensure nothing aggravates the situation in Bengal,&rdquo; she said.
The Chief Minister pointed out that over 200 attacks on Hindus have been reported in Bangladesh, sparking protests and subsequent crackdowns by authorities in the neighboring country. She urged people to act with restraint to avoid worsening the situation.
A Call for Responsible Media
 Banerjee also criticized the media for spreading unverified or inflammatory content, urging them to prioritize the state&rsquo;s welfare. &ldquo;West Bengal is not Uttar Pradesh that we will ban your telecast. But act responsibly in the interest of West Bengal and its people. If trouble breaks out here, will it not affect you? Similarly, if the situation worsens in Bangladesh, it will affect our relatives and friends there,&rdquo; she warned.
She emphasized that her government would follow the guidelines set by the Ministry of External Affairs while handling such issues.
Unity Above All
Banerjee concluded her address by reiterating her government&rsquo;s commitment to peace and secularism. &ldquo;Our sense of nationality, patriotism, and compassion must guide us. Let us enrich this soil and love it. If anyone tries to tear it apart, we must resist,&rdquo; she said.
Her remarks come at a time of strained relations between India and Bangladesh, with communal tensions spilling over into both countries. In West Bengal, Banerjee has taken a firm stance to prevent any disruption, reaffirming her dedication to preserving unity and harmony.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee waded into the NEET paper leak row on the 24th of June, asking Prime Minister Narendra Modi to scrap the all India entrance examination for medical courses. In a letter to Modi, Banerjee asked the prime minister to consider reverting to the previous system where states had the freedom to conduct their own entrance exams for medical students.&nbsp;
She said that before the NEET came into the picture in 2017, the states were allowed to conduct their own entrance examinations for medical courses and this system functioned smoothly.
She further said that the incidents of paper leak "not only compromise the quality of medical education in the country but adversely affect the quality of medical facilities/treatment in the country".
"This system was functioning smoothly and without much problems. This was better attuned to the regional curricula and educational standards. The state government usually spends more than Rs 50 lakh per doctor on education and internship. Therefore, the state should be given freedom to select medical students through Joint Entrance Examination," she said.
"The present system has led to massive corruption which benefits only the rich who can afford to pay, while the meritorious students belonging to the poor and middle class suffer and are the biggest victims," she added.

Mamata said that the BJP is forming the government undemocratically and illegally and that she would wait and keep a watch on the situation.

The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday struck down several classes as Other Backward Classes (OBC) under an Act of 2012 of West Bengal for reservation of vacancies in services and posts in the state, finding these illegal.
Passing judgement on petitions challenging the provisions of the Act, the court clarified that the services of citizens of the struck down classes, who are already in service or have availed the benefit of reservation or have succeeded in any selection process of the state will not be affected by the order.
The court struck down several classes for reservation as Other Backward Classes (OBC) given under The West Bengal Backward Classes (Other than Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes) (Reservation of Vacancies in Services and Posts) Act, 2012.
In the judgement, the division bench comprising justices Tapabrata Chakraborty and Rajasekhar Mantha clarified that the executive orders of the state government classifying 66 classes of OBC before 2010 were not interfered with, since these were not challenged in the petitions.
The bench directed that the executive orders classifying 42 classes made by the state from March 5, 2010 till May 11, 2012, were also quashed, with prospective effect, in view of the illegality of the reports recommending such classification.
The bench said that the opinion and advice of the Backward Classes Commission is ordinarily binding on the state legislature under the National Commission for Backward Classes Act, 1993.
The bench directed the Backward Classes Welfare Department of the state, in consultation with the Commission, to place a report before the legislature with recommendations of inclusion of new classes or for exclusion of remaining classes in the state list of OBCs.

West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said her party will extend support to the opposition INDIA bloc from outside to form the government at the Centre and vowed to repeal the CAA, NRC and UCC once the BJP government is voted out of power.
Expressing skepticism about the BJP's ambitious target of achieving 400 seats in the Lok Sabha elections, she said people will reject them totally.
"BJP is claiming that it will win 400 seats, but people are saying it will not happen. The entire country has understood that the BJP is a party full of thieves. We (TMC) will support the INDIA bloc from outside to form a government at the Centre. We will extend our support so that in (West) Bengal, our mothers and sisters never face a problem... and those who work in the 100 days' job scheme, also do not face problems," Banerjee said.
The TMC supremo, who was addressing an election rally at Chinsurah, Hooghly district, however, clarified that in West Bengal, her party will not support the Congress and CPI(M). Banerjee alleged that both the parties, who are part of the INDIA alliance, have joined hands and helping the BJP in the state.
"Do not count on the CPI(M) and the Congress in Bengal. They are not with us, they are with the BJP here. I am talking about that (INDIA bloc) in Delhi," she clarified.
The Chief Minister also referred to Atal Bihari Vajpayee's defeat in the 2004 elections, despite the BJP's 'India Shining' slogan.
"They (BJP) are desperate to win. But the country's voice is also united in calling for their defeat. Nobody was able to predict Atal Bihari Vajpayee's defeat in 2004. He gave the slogan 'India Shining' but the winds changed and the people didn't vote for him," she added.

"The Election Commission is a puppet and operates according to Modi's directions. Poll is being held for two-and-half months, have you (poll officials) ever realised the struggle of the common people," Banerjee said.
Accompanying the party's Hooghly nominee actress Rachana Banerjee, the CM accused Modi of violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) by allegedly announcing plans to expand the Ayushman Bharat Yojana to cover senior citizens over 70 years of age during the ongoing elections.
"Why are you saying this now when the elections are on? You should have announced this earlier... Modi babu, you are violating the MCC," she said.
Banerjee declared her party's unwavering stance against the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC), and Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Bengal.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday visited Garden Reach area in Kolkata, where an under-construction building collapsed, leaving two persons dead and at least seven people injured.
She directed Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal to take action against those involved in the illegal construction of the five-storey building which collapsed around midnight in the area.
Banerjee also visited the hospital where the injured persons are undergoing treatment.
&ldquo;This is a very congested area. This building had no sanction from the authorities and it was illegal. I have told the CP and the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to take action,&rdquo; she told reporters after taking stock of the situation.
Banerjee with her forehead bandaged visited the place. She suffered an injury on her forehead on Thursday evening and underwent stitches.
The chief minister said that her government stands by the families whose shanties were damaged in the building collapse.
She also said that two persons were killed in the building collapse and five to six people might still be trapped under the debris.
&ldquo;This is Ramzan month and this incident happened. I extend my condolences to the bereaved families,&rdquo; she added.&nbsp;

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on March 10 said that she won't allow the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act or the National Register of Citizens in the state.
Addressing a rally shortly after announcing TMC's candidates for Lok Sabha polls, the Bengal leader said that she won't open detention camps in the state.
&ldquo;We will never allow BJP to bring NRC or open detention camps in Bengal," said Mamata Banerjee at a TMC rally in Kolkata," the chief minister said.
She also blamed the BJP over the sectarian tensions in the country, claiming that the leaders from the saffron party often paint dissenters as anti-nationals.
"Sikhs are called Khalistanis, Muslims are called Pakistanis, there is exploitation against Dalits as well," she said.

In a novel way to protest West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee&rsquo;s alleged derogatory comment against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP supporters on Sunday symbolically fed honey to a photograph of the TMC supremo to &ldquo;sweeten her language&rdquo;.
During a rally taken out by the BJP&rsquo;s youth wing in Kolkata, the saffron party workers said they also carried copies of &lsquo;Barnaparichay&rsquo;, a popular primer written by Iswarchandra Vidyasagar, a 19th-century polymath and an icon in the state, to remind her about the richness of Bengali language.
The Trinamool Congress, on the other hand, stressed the need for self-introspection for the BJP, alleging that the state's leader of the opposition Suvendu Adhikari and others also talk about Banerjee in a derogatory way.
The chief minister allegedly used an offensive word against Modi during her recent dharna demanding release of MGNREGA funds due to West Bengal.
"We deplore the way Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has talked about a respected leader like Modiji. This goes against the culture of Bengal and our heritage,&rdquo; BJP youth leader Indranil Khan told reporters.
&ldquo;This also goes against the ideals of luminaries like Vidyasagar who had introduced 'Barnaparichay' to initiate Bengalis with the rich language. We are feeding honey on the lips of the CM (in a photo) as a symbolic step," he said.
Reacting to this, TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said that while Banerjee has always been respectful towards her political opponents, BJP leaders like Suvendu Adhikari refer to her as a 'thief' and use derogatory words about national leaders of other non-BJP parties like Congress.
&ldquo;Let them apologise for such expressions first," Ghosh said.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday accused the Congress of teaming up with the CPI(M) to strengthen the BJP in the state in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Banerjee, who was speaking at a public distribution programme here, said the TMC decided to fight the upcoming polls alone in West Bengal after the Congress declined her offer to contest two seats in the state.
Alleging that the CPI(M) had "tortured" people of the state during its 34-year rule, the TMC chief said she would "never be able to forgive" the Left party.
"The Congress does not have even one MLA in the state assembly... I offered them two Lok Sabha seats, both in Malda, but they wanted more. So, I told them I will not share a single seat with them. CPI(M) is their leader... have they forgotten the tortures of the CPI(M)?" "I will never forgive the CPI(M). I will also not forgive those who support the CPI(M)... because by doing so they actually support the BJP. I have seen that in the last panchayat elections," she said.
Banerjee said she has "no objection" if anyone from the family of former Congress stalwart from Malda, the late Gani Khan Chowdhury, contests the election.
"But the TMC will also contest. They (Congress) will fight along with the CPI(M), to strengthen the BJP... only the TMC is capable of politically fighting the BJP in the state," she said.
Banerjee said she would stage a dharna in Kolkata from February 2 if the BJP-led Union government does not clear the state's dues by February 1.
She urged party workers and those affected by the non-payment of funds to participate in the dharna, which would be staged at the BR Ambedkar statue in Red Road area in the eastern metropolis.
"I have given them an ultimatum till February 1 to clear all dues of the state, failing which I will stage a dharna from February 2. If the dues are not cleared, I know how to get it through a movement.

The chief minister claimed that the state's dues amount to a mammoth Rs 7,000 crore for several central government-run schemes including MGNREGA, Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awas Yojana (PMGAY), among others.&nbsp;

"We all want Mamata Banerjee to be a part of the 'Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra' as our motto is common... If we want to defeat the BJP in Bengal and India, she is very much needed. Our leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge have immense respect for Mamata ji," he said.
"I don't want to make any running commentary on seat-sharing, but we want this impasse to end and we will find a solution," he added.&nbsp;

The TMC supremo in her announcement said that the regional parties should be left to fight alone in other states. The alliance should not interfere with that.
